St. Mary Catholic Central built an early lead, then leaned on its defense to preserve a 20-14 win over Flat Rock Friday night.

The Falcons (2-4) had a two-score lead in the fourth quarter when they went for it on fourth down in their own territory. The attempt failed, and Flat Rock’s Brian Booms ran in from 3 yards out on the Rams' ensuing possession to bring the visitors within 6 points of the home team.

“It was a pretty good game both ways, both teams played their butts off,” said SMCC Coach Adam Kipf. “I think our defense played well... Our defense held when they needed to.”

Kipf specifically praised the defensive efforts of Brock Cousino and Cole Jondro. Jondro also scored on a 15-yard run.

Michael Laboe and Patrick Lipford ran in 15 and 2-yard touchdowns for the Falcons. Carson Kinsey led SMCC with 83 rushing yards on 8 carries.

Flat Rock quarterback Graham Junge connected with Joey Godfrey for an 11-yard touchdown pass.

“Real tough loss,” said Rams coach Buck Reaume. “Our defense played real well in the second half. We made a lot of mistakes, kind of a sloppy game for us from how we have been playing... We had a chance at the end, we threw a pass in the endzone and had a chance. We just didn’t make enough plays.”

Airport 51, Jefferson 14

CARLETON − Airport got back on track one week after suffering its first loss.

The Jets (5-1) scored seven unanswered touchdowns and led 44-0 before Jefferson got on the board in the fourth quarter.

Cooper Nye was 4-for-10 passing for 137 yards and 2 touchdowns, while adding one rushing score just before halftime. Brett Moore (11 yards) and Shade Daniels (89 yards) had TD catches.

Jack Mills finished with 144 yards rushing and a 17-yard score in the second quarter, Matthew Foor had 5 carries for 55 yards and touchdown runs of 31 and 4 yards in the second half, and Colin Nowak scored on a 39-yard run in the first quarter and an 81-yard kick return in the fourth.

"I was proud of the effort tonight to be able to put last week behind us and play a solid football game," Airport coach Jim Duffy said. "We talked about how we wouldn't be able to win two games tonight. No matter how well we played, it wasn't going to fix what happened a week ago. We had to put it behind us and not lose two in a row because we were still thinking about last week."

Malachi Pribyl ran for 101 yards and scored a touchdown for Jefferson, which also scored on a 32-yard pass from Myles Tackett to Tyler Vanderpool. The Bears dipped to 1-5.

“Airport is good,” Jefferson coach Eric Tipton said. “Zach Mills runs hard. He was definitely a person we came out to stop and he still did pretty well.

“We didn’t fully execute everything we wanted to do, but they had a good defensive plan and kind of took out off our game.”

Whiteford 68, Sand Creek 6

SAND CREEK – Whiteford had three touchdowns in the books before Sand Creek ran an offensive play.

Whiteford took the opening kickoff and scored on its third play, a 42-yard touchdown run by Hunter DeBarr. On the kickoff, the Aggie ball carrier mishandled the ball and Stepan Masserant scooped it up. Two plays later, Shea Ruddy hit his brother, Ryin, in the end zone.

On the next kickoff, Jake Iott fell on an Aggie fumble. Three plays later, Ruddy hit a sliding Kolby Masserant. Iott added his third straight two-point conversion and Whiteford led 24-0 before Sand Creek’s offense ran onto the field.

After giving up a TD drive, Whiteford scored 32 points in the second quarter to go into halftime ahead 56-6.

Shea Ruddy finished the game with a perfect 7-for-7 throwing the ball, for 120 yards. He also ran for 76 yards and a score. Jake Iott added a touchdown run, as did Drew Knaggs, Luis Trejo and Stepan Masserant. DeBarr scored a second time and finished with 74 yards. Iott also had 76 yards on the ground for the 6-0 Bobcats.

Ruddy’s second touchdown pass gave him 42 for his career, breaking Thomas Eitniear’s all-time Bobcat record for career TD passes of 41.

Ida 49, Onsted 22

IDA − Ida opened up a 21-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

"We started the game really well," Ida coach Jeff Potter said.

The Blue Streaks (2-4) led 28-8 at halftime and outscored Onsted 21-14 in the second half.

Two players reached the century mark for Ida, with Zach Lindsay hitting 123 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries and Luke Levicki picking up another two touchdowns with 102 yards on 13 carries. Nathan Miller added six carries for 68 yards, Dean Thomas had 47 yards on 11 touches, and Trevor Konieczny had five carries for 32 yards and a touchdown.

Josh Jones, Owen Snyder, and Gavin Albing snagged interceptions.

It was the second straight win for the Blue Streaks after an 0-4 start.

"There are still some things to work on, but we did some things really well," Potter said. "A lot of younger guys got an opportunity to play and did well."

New Boston Huron 27, Grosse Ile 0

NEW BOSTON – Gavin Moczydlowsky rushed for two touchdowns and threw for two more as Huron (4-2) won its third straight game.

Moczydlowsky (4-for-10 passing for 102 yards; 12 carries for 117 yards) ran into the endzone from 17 and 2 yards out, then connected with Ethan Woolery and Rory Callahan for 28- and 30-yard touchdown passes, respectively.

It was a phenomenal effort by the Huron defense. Grosse Ile came into the game 4-1 and averaging 30.8 points per game. The Red Devils had not been shut out since Sept. 5 of 2014. Huron also blanked them on that day.

Callahan racked up four sacks and teamed with Josh Buettner, Jesse Brown and Woolery to dominate the line of scrimmage.

"We looked at the beginning of the year for the defense to be a strength for us," Huron coach Tom Hoover said. "We've got some good players in key positions. They've identified what they have to do."

Omari Carter makes a cut for Gibraltar Carlson during a 33-28 loss to Southgate Anderson Friday night.

Southgate Anderson 33, Gibraltar Carlson 28

SOUTHGATE − Gibraltar Carlson outscored Southgate Anderson 28-13 in the second half but could not make for a large halftime deficit. The Marauders suffered their first loss of the season, falling to 5-1 overall.

"Hats off to their staff and their kids coming out fired up and ready to go," Carlson coach Jason Gendron said. "We just didn't have an answer for their energy in the first half and things just weren't going our way."

Anderson's opening drive ate most of the clock in the first quarter. The Titans forced Carlson to punt on back-to-back drives to open the game and extended their own scoring drives with a pair of exciting fourth-down plays.

"It was a long halftime," Gendron said. "We said, 'Hey, take a deep breath. We know what we're capable of.' We just had to regroup. We had the ball coming out of the second half and we needed a score and we needed a stop. That's exactly what we got."

Tyler Collier scored early in the third quarter on a 30-yard pass from Eddie Light, and Omari Carter added touchdown runs of 45 and 50 yards. Izaiah Wright's 13-yard TD run in the fourth and Noah Gerweck's late interception gave the Marauders a chance to win the game.

"We still had two timeouts and plenty of time on the clock," Gendron said. "But credit to Southgate, they were able to get a huge fourth-down stop and win it."

Riverview 42, Milan 7

MILAN – The Big Reds’ (1-5) night went downhill after quarterback Brady Bovenkerk’s 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

“We started the way we hoped,” said Milan Coach Jesse Hoskins. “We scored early and got a stop on defense. Late in the second quarter we didn’t convert on a 4th-and-1 in the red zone, and Riverview got a quick score.

“It was bad news after that.”

Bovenkerk completed 8-of-16 passes for 76 yards to go with his rushing touchdown. Ronny Johnson led the Big Reds with 86 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Pioneer (Ohio) North Central 34, Erie Mason 14

PIONEER, Ohio − Pioneer North Central gave an undefeated Erie Mason little to work with on offense.

North Central ran the ball effectively on long drives and frustrated Mason's typically strong passing attack. It was the first time this season Mason did not throw for a touchdown.

"They committed a lot to try to stop things through the air," Mason coach Steve Bowers said. "We always seemed a step off, a step away. We were one step away from a big play or just off our receiver's fingertips. We just weren't clicking like we normally do on offense."

Vaugh Brown had a pair of touchdown runs in the second quarter (34 and 4 yards) to account for all of Mason's scoring. North Central led 20-14 at halftime and pulled away with two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including one with 50 seconds remaining.

"We just ran into a team that was a whole lot more physical than us," Bowers said. "We just need to get back to work. We have a few tough games as we finish the regular season and those teams like to run the ball which we've seen a lot of the past few weeks. We just need to learn from this game and move forward."

Louden Murbach led the Mason defense with 11 tackles.
