HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS HOCKEY: Abboud's last-second hat trick gives Weymouth revenge on Archies

CANTON - It was a period to remember for Wren Abboud and the Weymouth High girls hockey team.

Trailing 2-0 midway through the final frame against Archbishop Williams at Canton Sportsplex on Wednesday, the Wildcats scored four consecutive goals in the final six minutes to steal a frantic, come-from-behind victory. Abboud, a sophomore, was responsible for three of them in the final three minutes.

So, how did the surprise hat trick feel?

“I just -- I don’t really know,” Abboud said postgame.

“It feels like a routine,” Weymouth assistant coach John Heffernan jokingly jumped in.

“It feels like a routine,” Abboud sarcastically agreed.

Kidding aside, Abboud reacted as any team player would. Weymouth fell to Archbishop Williams 6-2 in its season-opener, and has gone on to lose just one game since, winning three of its last four. That's all that matters to the prolific goal-scorer.

“It feels good because we lost to them at the beginning of the season so it shows we improved," Abboud said. "A hat trick is good too, but it feels so good to come back because I bet they thought they had that game (won).”

Weymouth got on the board first courtesy of a drive by sophomore defenseman Isabelle Hajjar at the 6:14 mark of the third period, and then the flood gates opened for Abboud.

“The third period -- play as hard as you possibly can, get the puck in the zone and see what happens," Heffernan said. "And that’s what happened.”

Abboud scored her first goal, the game-tying score (2-2), with 3:34 remaining on a push up the left side of the ice. A minute later, at 1:49, Abboud capped off a breakaway with the go-ahead goal. It's only fitting the puck found her stick with seconds to play and an empty net in sight to clinch the trifecta.

“The thing is, she works hard all the time. She’s a great teammate. That whole period, everybody brought it. She came along with everybody,” said Heffernan. “She is the go-to person, but the whole line played really well.”

The Weymouth defensive unit stepped up at the right time as well, led by freshman goaltender Alyssa O'Connor, who stomped out crucial scoring chances from Archbishop Williams as the game's momentum began to dramatically swing.

“We couldn’t have asked for better goaltending. She kept the door closed for us, and made some big saves in the second period when we didn’t play that well," Heffernan said.

With the experiences the younger Wildcats are gaining, Weymouth is building itself an impressive foundation to contend with not only this season, but for seasons to come.

Freshman Ella Bates joins Abboud as one of the team's top players, while sophomore Molly Coughlin, senior Mairead O'Connell, eighth grader Samantha Lindbolm, senior Sofia Buccheri, junior Tammy Kelly and Carolyn Butler all had productive showings on Wednesday. Butler, Coughlin and Kelley each finished with an assist.

“It’s like a family," said Abboud. "They’re all supportive for each other and we all work really hard as a team.”
