High school girls soccer: 6A/5A/4A first round recap

6A Playoffs

Lehi 1, Bingham 0

No. 14 seed Lehi won a hard-fought defensive battle against No. 19 seed Bingham in 6A play. Lehi’s defense, spearheaded by keeper Kelsey Badger, was able to shutout Bingham. Erin Dahl scored the only goal of the game in the first half to propel the Pioneers to victory. Lehi travels to play No. 3 seed Copper Hills in the second round.

Salt Lake Academy 3, Westlake 1

No. 15 Salt Lake Academy broke open a tie game at half with a pair of goals in the second half to hold off No. 18 seed Westlake for the 6A first round win. The Griffins, who won the 3A state title last year, got off to a great start in their 6A debut. Keely Webb, Maci Nell and Emily Blanched all tallied goals for the Griffins. The path forward gets much more difficult in the next round for Salt Lake Academy as it faces No. 2 seed Lone Peak.

Herriman 3, Fremont 2

No. 17 seed Herriman hit the road and earned a narrow 6A first round win over No. 16 seed Fremont as Kari Pate notched a pair of goals for the Mustangs, with Naomi Thoreson adding a third goal. Herriman led 3-1 in the second half, but Fremont cut the lead to 3-2 and forced the Mustangs to see the win out defensively. Maggie Ware and Haylee John scored goals for Fremont. With the win. Herriman advances into the 6A second round to face No. 1 Davis.

5A Playoffs

Kearns 4, Taylorsville 1

No. 9 seed Kearns took care of business against No. 24 seed Taylorsville behind goals from 4 different players. The regular season Region 4 champions won with relative ease to advance to the 5A second round where it will face No. 8 seed Brighton.

Roy 4, Northridge 2

No. 21 seed Roy, which lost to Northridge twice in region play, overcame a four-game losing streak to upset the No. 12 seed Northridge in the 5A first round. The Roy offense caught fire after only scoring 17 regular season goals behind goals from Macy Reed, Eva Reed and Aylen Salazar. Its defense was able to slow down Northridge and secure the victory despite a valiant second half effort from the Knights. The Royals travel to face off against No. 5 seed Bountiful in the second round, a team they split the regular season series with 1-1.

Maple Mountain 1, Highland 0

No. 10 seed Maple Mountain survived a scare against No. 23 seed Highland as it held on for the 5A first round win. The Golden Eagles came into the game with a streak of four consecutive shutouts, which they continued behind keeper Anya Gulley. The Highland defense held its own as well until Kesley Jewkes was able to find the back of the net with about 20 minutes left in the match. Maple Mountain will face off against Region 7 foe, and No. 7 seed Timpview. It will be seeking revenge after losing twice to the Thunderbirds in the regular season.

Woods Cross 4, Hunter 0

No. 14 seed Woods Cross shutout No. 19 seed Hunter to advance to the second round of the 5A playoffs. Oakley Anderson continued her stellar season, adding two goals and one assist, to push the Wildcats to a 4-0 win. Sam Vincent notched a shutout in goal, supported by the tough defense from Woods Cross. It travels to face No. 3 seed Wasatch in the second round next week.

Viewmont 3, Box Elder 1

No. 20 seed Viewmont, which only won four games this season, travelled to Box Elder and upset the 13th-seed Bees in the first round of the 5A state tournament. Box Elder carried a 1-0 lead into halftime until the Viewmont offense awoke in the second half to tack on three goals. Saylor Miller, Alauna Titensor and Mazie Tullis all found the back of the net to propel Viewmont to a second round appearance against No. 4 seed Springville.

Alta 6, West Jordan 0

Erica Harkness and Kate Heaton each scored a pair of goals, and Alta’s defense was sharp throughout the 5A first round as the 15th-seed Hawks had no problem taking care of business against No. 18 seed West Jordan. Biz Vietti etched the shutout for Alta, which had five different players record a shutout in the win. With the win, Alta advances to face No. 2 seed Clearfield in the second round.

East 1, Bonneville 0

No. 11 seed East beat No. 22 seed Bonneville in the 5A first round to advance to the second round where it will face No. 6 seed Olympus.

Spanish Fork 4, Salem Hills 1

No. 16 seed Spanish Fork claimed a 4-1 victory over Region 7 opponent, No. 17 seed Salem Hills, for the 5A first round win. The Dons won both regular season matchups over the Skyhawks, and continued their winning ways in the playoffs. PJ Ashworth and Kaylie Schaeffer scored a goal each for Spanish Fork, while Lexi Kovatch recorded a brace. The Spanish Fork defense was able to hold strong against Salem Hills, and advance to the second round to face off with 5A No. 1 seed, and defending champion, Skyline.


4A Playoffs

Cedar City 4, Orem 1

No. 19 seed Cedar City upset the No. 14 seed Orem with a 4-1 victory. Tylee Nielson set up three of the Reds’ goals, two of which were put away by Rylan Tebbs. Cedar City came into the match on a four-game losing streak, but that didn’t show at all against the Tigers as it dominated the higher seeded team. Cedar City will face off against No. 3 seed Park City in the second round next week.

Mountain Crest 8, Hurricane 0

Defending 4A champion Mountain Crest came into this year’s playoffs as the No. 9 seed, and dominated its first game against No. 24 seed Hurricane. The high-powered Mountain Crest offense flexed its muscles with an impressive eight goal showing, highlighted by Hadli Barrera’s haul of four goals. The defense shutout Hurricane to continue the Mustangs’ momentum into the second round. Mountain Crest will face off against No. 8 seed Crimson Cliffs in the second round next week.

Uintah 4, Bear River 2

No. 12 seed Uintah took care of business in the first round against No. 21 seed Bear River with a 4-2 victory. The Utes found scoring from all around the field, with goals by Juliana Rod-Caloca, Zoey Glenn, Emma Glenn, and Gabby Long. Uintah relied on team play, with all four of its goals coming from assists. Uintah travels to face No. 5 seed Timpanogos in the second round next week. The two teams split their regular season matches, with each team winning one.

Sky View 3, Hillcrest 1

No. 15 seed Sky View claimed a 3-1 victory over No. 18 seed Hillcrest behind goals from Langi Laulu-Pututau, Maysen Mckay and Kate Sundstrom in the 4A first round. Laulu-Pututau’s goal put the Bobcats ahead early, but the shortly found themselves tied after a Hillcrest goal. Sundstrom’s goal gave Sky View the lead again, and it was able to close out the win to advance to the second round. Sky View will next travel to No. 2 seed Stansbury in the 4A second round next week.

The defenses for No. 17 seed Provo and No. 16 seed Jordan never budged in regulation, but Provo finally pulled out the win in a shootout, 4-3, to advance to the 4A second round. The match was a stout defensive battle throughout regular time and both overtimes, with neither team able to find the back of the net. Provo keeper Elle Jaynes stood strong through the entire game, helping to shut out a Jordan team that was averaging nearly two goals per game. The Bulldogs win sets up a battle with No. 1 seed Green Canyon in the second round.

Logan 3, Dixie 2

No. 13 seed Logan defeated No. 20 seed Dixie in a back-and-forth 4A playoff game. The match started out electric, with both teams scoring within the first two minutes. Grizzlies’ midfielder Mia Lopez found the back of the net just before halftime to take the lead. Dixie tied the game again in the 50th minute and the game was deadlocked until Lopez completed the hat trick in the 70th minute. With the win, Logan advances to the second round and sets up a matchup with region foe, No. 4 seed Ridgeline.

Murray 5, Cottonwood 0

After beating Cottonwood twice during region play, No. 10 seed Murray made it a clean sweep with another win in the first round of the 5A state tournament on Thursday. Mia Smith, Grace Taeoalii, Sariah Taeoalii, Preslee Stock and Addy Simmons all scored goals in the win over the 23rd-seed Colts. With the win, Murray advances to face No. 7 seed Mountain View in next week’s second round.

Snow Canyon 14, Tooele 0

A first-half scoring barrage from No. 11 seed Snow Canyon propelled it to victory in the first round against No. 22 seed Tooele. Amelia Nadauld and Lilly Wittwer both notched hat tricks for the Warriors, who scored 53 goals during the regular season. Tori Martin and Addie Taylor combined in goal to shutout Tooele and help Snow Canyon advance to the second round, where it will face off against No. 6 seed Desert Hills.
