High School Golf: Central boys set for regionals after 2nd place finish in 2-6A tourney

The Central High School boy’s golf team qualified for regionals after finishing in second place behind Midland Legacy at the District 2-6A tournament on Tuesday.

The Bobcats carded a team score of 646 which was one stroke behind Midland Legacy’s 645 points who took home the District Championship at the Brentwood Country Club. The second-place finish is enough for Central to represent District 2-6A at the Region I-6A Tournament at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie in April.

“(The district tournament) was pretty tough,” Central High School boys golf coach Cal Arrott said. “The wind was blowing pretty hard, and it definitely wasn’t the round that we wanted going into regionals, but we have plenty of time to prepare.”

Despite the tough conditions, Central’s Colin Leonard finished as the top individual medalist, finishing with a 147 after two rounds. Miguel Flores-Acton and Brooks Vaughn were the next best performers for the Bobcats finishing in sixth and seventh place, each shooting 165. Cullen Honea finished with a 169.

Earlier this spring, the Bobcats traveled to Grand Prairie for a regional preview tournament and finished the two rounds at 632, which helped them finish ninth of 24 teams.

“I think my boys have a better idea of what the golf course looks like (after the Regional Preview),” Arrott said. “I think that we know how to game plan going into it (and) how we’re going to play certain shots off the tee and how we’re going to attack certain greens.”

Since the regional preview tournament, the team has not placed lower than second at the other tournaments they played in. The team took first at the Andrews Boys Classic with a 596 and was second at the San Angelo Boys Classic totaling 635.

“The way you play golf is your make pars, and then birdies are just bonus, and minimizing those big numbers will be the key and we have a better idea how to do that since we’ve already been (to Tangle Ridge in Grand Prairie)," Arrott said.

The Region I-6A Boys Tournament is scheduled for April 19-20.
