High school hoops: Ben Peterson, Nash Bosma reach 30 points in wins

Two Holland-area boys basketball players totaled 30-plus points to lead their teams to victory this week.

Fennville's Ben Peterson scored 36 and West Ottawa's Nash Bosma scored 31.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fennville 58, Covert 48

Ben Peterson led the Blackhawks with 36 points and eight rebounds.

Quinn Rosema scored nine points and Aidan Swingle added eight points.

West Ottawa 65, Caledonia 61

Nash Bosma scored 31 points to lead the Panthers to the OK Red win.

Jackson Wiegerink had 16 points, nine rebounds and six blockx.

Hamilton 73, Fruitport 39

The Hamilton boys basketball team bounced back from a tough loss on Friday to dominate Fruitport 73-39 on Tuesday.

The Hawkeyes led 18-17 after the first quarter, then outscored Fruitport 15-5 in the second and held them to single digits in the final three quarters.

Thano Klett led the Hawkeyes with 20 points. Brady Tebo and Brant goodpaster each scored 11, JD DeGroot had eight and Justin McIllwain added seven.

“We responded the right way after taking one on the chin Friday. We were tough defensively and finished possession’s on the glass which led to us being able to share the ball," Hamilton coach Nick Kronemeyer said. "As always the mission on hand is to play our best basketball at the end of the year and tonight we took a step towards that.” We had 21 assists and that has to be the highest number I have had coaching."

Reeths-Puffer 54, Zeeland East 44

The Rockets made more 3-pointers than 2-pointers in the gameand topped the Chix in the OK Green showdown.

Layne Risdon had 23 points, including four 3s, and four blocked shots,. BJ walker had 12 points.

Wyoming 58, Holland 49 

Holland was led by Omari Peak with 14 pts. Arthur Powell added 12 and Jacob VanHekken added 10.

Wyoming was led by Quintin Williams with 15 points

Allendale 56, Holland Christian 48

Kyle Cannon and Harry Halbert each scored 12 for the Maroons. Caleb Karsten added nine.

Schoolcraft 80, Saugatuck 32

The defending Division 3 state champions topped the Trailblazers.

The Trailblazers ended the night one shy of 30 turnovers and Schoolcraft shot 60% from the field, including 10 shots from behind the arc and 32 points from their star player Shane Rykse.

Leading the way for the Trailblazers was sophomore Carter Miller with nine points. Russell Vande Poel added seven points.

Kalamazoo Hackett 91, Black River 43

Jonah VanderMeer led the River Rats (6-1) with 12 points. Kai Norman had nine points.

"We got out-worked on the glass tonight," Black River coach Darrion Denham said. "Credit Kalamazoo Hackett, they outplayed us the whole game on both sides of the ball. They are such a great team."

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Zeeland West 41, Mona Shores 38

Zeeland West won a tough game on the road tonight against Mona Shores 41-38. The Dux led 35-26 heading into the fourth quarter but the Sailors cut the lead down to a single possession game multiple times late and even got a look from 3 in the last seconds, but the Dux held on for the victory.

Jordyn Klaasen had a game high 16 points. Kara Bartels scored eight and Ally Yonker had seven.

The Dux are now 12-7 (9-2) on the season.

Hamilton 56, Fruitport 6

The Hawkeyes (13-6, 8-3 OK Green) started the game on an 18-1 run and never looked back.

Taylor VanderZwaag scored 15 points, Kaitlyn Geurink had 13 points, Kyra Kleinheksel had 11 points and Kaylie VanDerHulst scored eight points.

"We set the tone with our defensive effort and intensity. Offensively we moved the ball well. It’s great to see players who are willing to pass the ball around and get the best shot possible for the team. Everyone contributed to this win," Hamilton coach Jacquelyn Malloch said.

Fennville 30, Comstock 23

The Fennville Blackhawks beat the Comstock Colts 30-23 on Monday.

Fennville led 8-6 after one quarter of play and went into the half ahead 17-10. The Blackhawks (4-13) would remain ahead for the remainder of the game as they entered the 4th quarter up 19-17. Lila Rosema led the Blackhawks with 10 points on the night. Madisynn Jefferson followed up with eight points. Sophomore Addyson Brown had her biggest game of the season scoring six points.

“We really stepped it up in the fourth quarter - it was our best scoring quarter of the game," Fennville coach Josh Weimer said. "I’m very proud of the girls, they really earned this one. We were down to seven girls tonight, and went down to six at the half. Yet they continued to fight and push through. The girls were able to handle the press well all game long. We did hurt ourselves at times, but we also helped ourselves at times. Their performance was enough to get it done tonight, and It’s great to see them get a 'W.' Addyson Brown really stepped up tonight and I’m very happy for her.”

The Blackhawks (4-14) then lost on Tuesday to Our Lady of the Lake 36-5.

Reeths-Puffer 42, Zeeland East 38

Zeeland East hosted Reeths-Puffer on Tuesday night and lost 42-38.

The Chix were leading for the majority of the game, but the Rockets hit a huge 3 with 1:10 left in the game to pull away.

Mirra Fenlon led the Chix with 15 points. Rachel Miller chipped in 14.

Chix are 5-14 (2-9 OK Green) overall.

Constantine 39, Saugatuck 38

Missed free throws played a large role in Saugatuck’s one-point loss on the road to Constantine.

Down 19-10 at half Saugatuck kept battling to take a 34-35 point lead late but just could not convert onfree throws throughout the game.

"Our effort was much better after the break and I’m proud of how we fought back short handed but it’s tough to win games when you struggle like we did from the line," Saugatuck coach Kevin Tringali said. "We are in the midst of the dog days of the season, we first and foremost have to get healthy these last two weeks. Our goals have not changed.

Lawton 54, Black River 42

Black River didn’t score a point in the second quarter, and that was the difference.

Olivia Hayes led the River Rats with 29 points.

Wyoming 55, Holland 15

The Wolves shot well throughout the game while Holland had trouble finishing despite getting very good looks.

Ari Gray led Holland with seven while Hadleigh Hilgert added six.

Allendale 33, Holland Christian 32

The Maroons lost the OK Blue game.
