High school hoops: Holland boys top Mona Shores; Hamilton wins in OT

NORTON SHORES - The Holland High School boys basketball team earned a huge road win on Friday, defeating Mona Shores 65-57.

Jacob VanHekken led the Dutch with 15 points while Cam Ferguson added 11 and Josiah VanHekken added 10.

"We got off to a great start in the first half, especially on the defensive end which is something we’ve been working extremely hard to improve," Holland coach Mason Theile said. "Offensively, we’ve stressed the importance of playing together and shooting with confidence and that paid off tonight, as we made 11 3’s as a group. Couldn’t be more proud of our guys how resilient they’ve been this season."

Mona Shores was led by JT Foster with 21 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hamilton 47, Allendale 42, OT

The Hawkeyes survived in overtime to win the OK Blue showdown and remain in first place.

Hamilton outscored the Falcons 9-4 in the overtime to secure the win.

The Hawkeyes shot just 33% and scored just 10 points in the first half and trailed 17-10 before rallying in the second half.

Justin McIllwain went 13-for-14 from the free-throw line for all of his points.

Brant Goodpaster added 12 and JD DeGroog had seven.

Grandville 43, West Ottawa 35

The Panthers trailed by one point with a minute and a half left, but the Bulldogs hung on for the OK Red win.

Danny Siterlet scored 17 points to lead the Panthers. Jackson Wiegerink had seven points and 10 blocks.

Galesburg-Augusta 56, Saugatuck 50

The Trailblazers were edged in a game that could have paved the way for them to earn at least a share of the SAC division title.

"The intensity on display from both teams was fun to watch, and the game stayed a one possession game the entire first half with both teams trading buckets and defensive stops," Saugatuck coach Brian Ward said. "We were able to battle back and make it a three point game with less than a minute to go. Unfortunately, the big shot wouldn't fall and Galesburg-Augusta was able to hit free throws to seal the game away."

Leading the way for the Trailblazers was junior Russell Vande Poel with 25 points, including five 3s. Senior Will Ayers added 12 points.

Fennville 52, Coloma 43

The Blackhawks claimed the SAC victory behind 16 points from Ben Peterson.

Juan Porrez had 10 points and Aiden Swingle added seven for the Blackhawks.

Fruitport 59, Holland Christian 46

The Maroons got 18 points from Caleb Karsten and 10 from Kyle Cannon.

"We had a tough first half, but came out much better in the second half," Holland Christian coach Brad Jansen said.

Delton Kellogg 61, Black River 57

The River Rats dropped to 4-9.

Josiah Thomas led the Rats with 14 points and four assists. Julian Fowler chipped in 11 points and six rebounds.

"My guys played super hard today, they rebound the ball well, pushed the ball in transition, and made the extra pass when needed," Black River coach Darrion Denham said. "Our bench stepped up as well, so that was good to see from guys that don’t see the floor often."

GIRLS BASKETBALL

West Ottawa 54, Grandville 48

The Panthers scored 42 points in the second half to roll to the OK Red win.

Gabby Reynolds dominated with 38 points to lead the Panthers (12-5, 4-4 OK Red).

Chelsea Overbeek scored nine points, while Magaly Lemus had points and 12 rebounds, and Brooke Pedersen scored five points.

Holland Christian 52, Fruitport 27

The Maroons won the OK Blue showdown.

Jenna VandenBrink led the team with 12 points. Kierea Smits had 10 points and Bria Lampen had nine points.

Allendale 32, Hamilton 29

The Hawkeyes struggled to score, especially in the second half and dropped to 11-5 and 6-2 in the OK Blue.

Kaitlyn Geurink scored 15 points and Kyra Kleinheksel added eight points.

"We got out to an early lead and led by as many as nine in the first quarter. But all game it felt like there was a lid on the basket," Hamilton coach Jacquelyn Malloch said. "The shots didn’t fall when we needed them to and Allendale shot the lights out."

Mona Shores 39, Holland 27

A 15-4 run in the second quarter by the Sailors was the difference as the Dutch held Mona Shores to single digits in the other three quarters.

"We played together throughout the contest holding Mona Shores offense below its season average and put together several great offensive possesions as well," Holland coach Dan Telgenhof said. "It was one of our most complete team games despite the loss."

Ari Gray led Holland in scoring with 10. Fellow senior Jada Livingston scored seven while sophomore Hadleigh Hilgert added five.

Black River 52, Delton Kellogg 31

Olivia Hayes poured in 25 points and Melanie Alferink added 11.

Black River moved to 9-7 on season.

"We were short three players due to various reasons, but had girls step up at key moments," Black River coach Brent Rowe said. "A huge game from Ella Sligh on the defensive end paved the team.”

Coloma 45, Fennville 32

Fennville was down 15-7 after one quarter of play and went into the half trailing 21-16. The Blackhawks remained behind 32-21 entering the fourth quarter.

Kyli Bushee led the Blackhawks (3-11) with 18 points. Lila Rosema finished with nine points.

Galesburg-Augusta 58, Saugatuck 29

The Trailblazers had a tough night as they traveled to division foe Galesburg Augusta and were defeated 58-29.

“We flat out got taken to the woodshed tonight, simply was just not ready for whatever reasons. Credit G-A they played well right from the tip," Saugatuck coach Kevin Tringali said. "When your teams not ready to compete, that’s on the coaches, we are a much better team that how we played this evening. Thankfully we have good player leadership so collectively we will figure this out and turn this back around.”
