High school hoops rewind: Ben Peterson explodes for 39 as Fennville sweeps

Ben Peterson could not be stopped.

The Fennville senior guard explosded for 39 points, eight rebounds and four steals to lead the Blackhawks to a 56-51 win over Coloma.

Aidan Swingle, Quinn Rosema and Juan Porrez each had six points. Swingle had 10 rebounds and Rosema had six rebounds and three blocks.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Delton Kellogg 57, Black River 45

The River Rats dropped to 1-3.

Leading the Rats in scoring was Jonah Vandermeer with 15 points and Josiah Thomas chip in 13 points an 6 rebounds

"Our guys started off slow an couldn’t get in a rhythm the first half. Against a solid team we need to have a better start," Black River coach Darrion Denham said. "We pick up things in the second half but it wasn’t enough. I love the energy an fight from my guy but we need to be locked in off tip ball for us to have a chances."

Saugatuck games canceled

The Saugatuck vs. Galesburg-Augusta games were postponed on Friday because of a non-COVID "schoolwide sickness" at Galesburg-Augusta. A makeup date will be forthcoming.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fennville 37, Coloma 21

Fennville led 8-2 after one quarter of play and continued to lead entering the half 23-4. Going into the fourth quarter the Blackhawks kept the lead at 32-8. Sophomore Lila Rosema led the Blackhawks with 18 points.

Madisynn Jefferson followed up with 13 points for the Blackhawks (2-3).

"We didn’t finish the game the way we should have, but we are still a young team and learning, and it’s great to learn from a win for a change," Fennville coach Josh Weimer said. "I’m proud of our ladies for how they started the game - they came out with great energy, and it put us in a great position for the remainder of the game."

Black River 45, Delton Kellogg 28

Olivia Hayes dominated with 22 points and 15 rebounds for Black River. Camille Wolbrink added 12 points, 15 rebounds, and 15 blocks.

"Black River moves to 4-1 on the season after superb play by their sophomore point guard Melanie Alferink. Olivia Hayes continues her hot streak by averaging over 21 points a game this season," Black River coach Brent Rowe said.

Grandville 61, Holland 28

Holland lost to Grandville 61-48 on the road Friday night.

Holland fell behind early but kept fighting all game long.

Ari Gray led Holland with 14 points while Hadleigh Hilgert led the team in rebounds while also scoring seven points.
