High school hoops rewind: Zeeland East, Holland, Black River win Saturday matinees
ZEELAND - The Zeeland East boys basketball team beat Plymouth at home 53-45 on Saturday to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Leading the Chix in scoring was sophomore BJ Walker with 26 points. Junior Layne Risdon chipped in with 10 points.
"Our guys were able to turn around after playing Jenison last night and compete at a high level with a very good Plymouth team that has a lot of weapons," Zeeland East coach Jeff Carlson said. "We got some great minutes from some of our guys off the bench and were able to play a much more composed game than we played last night against Jenison. Credit to our guys for making some adjustments from last night's game as well as into the second half in which we entered down 3."
BOYS BASKETBALL
Black River 53, Martin 38
The River Rats earned theif first win under coach Darrion Denham, improving to 1-1 after the 53-38 win over Martin on Saturday.
Jonah Vandermeer led the Rats with 26 points and six assists. Josiah Thomas added 12 points and five rebounds.
"I was really impressed with our defense tonight and our rotation was great. We rebounded the ball well and played fast in transition," Denham said. "We also did not allow second chance points. We played with great energy the whole game."
Holland 45, Pontiac 34
The Dutch won their second consecutive game, defeating Pontiac in the Battle of 1-96 Classic at Ottawa Hills.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Martin 43, Black River 28
The River Rats lost the Saturday showdown.
Camille Wolbrink had 12 points and Olivia Hayes had 11.
"We played great d all night but struggled to shoot," Black River coach Brent Rowe said. "Martin is a good team and this loss will make us better."
