High school hoops: Zeeland West girls top Holland; Black River wins two

ZEELAND - The Zeeland West girls basketball team won at home against Holland 61-38 on Tuesday.

The Dux used a 17-1 opening quarter to set the tone and improved to 10-7 overall and 7-2 in the OK Green.

Zeeland West showed its balanced offense. Jordyn Klaasen led the Dux with 13 points. Also in double figures was Marissa Ybarra with 11 and Georgia Kuyers with 10. Lindy Gulker and Tessa Rindfliesch both had eight.

Holland was led in scoring by a game-high 14 from Ari Gray. Jada Livingston and Lilly Mendels both scored seven while Emma Margaron added six.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hudsonville 60, West Ottawa 50

The Panthers dropped the OK Red rivalry game.

Nash Bosma scored 18 points. Jackson Wiegerink recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocks.

"Jackson has been dominating games on defense and did it again," West Ottawa coach Jared Redell said. "Proud of where has come and where he is at now."

Black River wins twice

The Black River boys defeated Lawrence on Monday night, 55-52, then came back and defeated Coloma 52-47 on Tuesday.

On Monday, Jonah VanderMeer led the River Rats with 16 points and six assists. Atif Usmani chippped in in 12 points.

"Great win tonight for our program, good to see my guys settle in," Black River coach Darrion Denham said. "They understood the game plan and executed on both sides of the ball tonight. We pushed the ball well and made shots, our energy was relentless tonight. I’m super proud of my guys."

On Tuesday, Josiah Thomas led the Rats with 20 points and four rebounds. VanderMeer had 11 points and three assists as the Rats improved to 6-9.

"Our starters stepped up big time tonight, they got going early, our bench was engaged and gave us great minute as well," Denham said. "We settled for outside shots in the first half which we made, but the second half, we focused on getting to the rim and finishing. We had a couple guys banged up from playing back to back games but we managed to fight through it. Tonight was a huge win for our program."

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Black River 49, Parchment 23

The River Rats improved to 10-7 on the season with another road win.

The Rats were paced by Olivia Hayes with 18, Delyla Martinez with 13 and Camille Wolbrink with 10.

"We had another amazing defensive effort by their dynamic duo of guards Melanie Alferink and Ella Sligh," Black River coach Brent Rowe said.

Hudsonville 56, West Ottawa 45

Playing without all-state guard Gabby Reynolds, who was out of town at a funeral, the Panthers lost the OK Red game 56-45 on Tuesday.

Chelsea Overbeek scored 20 points to lead the Panthers (12-5). Sami O'Connor had nine points. Magaly Lemus totaled eight points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks.

Muskegon 52, Zeeland East 29

Zeeland East lost to Muskegon 52-29 on Tuesday night.

Emily Wierenga led the Chix with 12 points.
