High school JV basketball player collapses during Rochester game. What we know now

A student athlete collapsed during a high school junior varsity basketball game in Rochester Wednesday evening.

Around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, emergency responders were called to John James Audubon School No. 33, 500 Webster Ave., to assist a 15-year-old boy in medical distress, said Capt. Greg Bello of the Rochester Police Department.

During the game between Monroe High School and the School of the Arts, the boy, a Monroe High School student, apparently collapsed after he went into cardiac arrest, according to Bello.

A school safety officer and athletic trainer who work for the City School District used an AED to begin life-saving efforts, a district spokeswoman said.

The boy was revived and was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment.

As of Thursday morning, the boy was in stable condition at Strong and was "steadily improving," district spokeswoman Marisol Ramos-Lopez said in a written statement.

All City School district schools are equipped with AEDs and staff trained to use them, she said.

No other details about the incident were immediately released.
