High school postseason: SJM, Firebaugh win tennis titles; water polo championships set

San Joaquin Memorial and Firebaugh were crowned Central Section girls champions this week.

The top-seeded Panthers defeated No. 2 Central Valley Christian 5-3 that was played at Fresno City College on Tuesday.

Memorial won the match when the singles match that was decided on a tiebreaker.

Catherine Holt, Annaliese Kielmeyer, Roxie Richburg, Kendall Fry, Yalia Gutierrez, Ella Saroyan, Ellie Assemi and Ava Anderson competed for the Panthers.

It was the Panthers’ first D-II section title.

In Division IV, Firebaugh defeated Chavez 7-2.

The Eagles swept the doubles matches and won 4 of the 6 singles matches to win the match.

Adriana Becerra won her No. 4 singles match on a super tiebreaker.

Firebaugh had lost to Caruthers in the D-IV section championship.

The Eagles have won three section championships.

Water polo

The section championships are set for Saturday to be played at Fresno State.

No. 5 Clovis North advanced to CIF NorCal Division II regional semifinals with a four-set win over Clovis.

The Broncos will host No. 16 University at 6 p.m. Saturday.

In SoCal Division III, No. 2 Redwood swept No. 7 Venice. The Rangers next face No. 3 Temple City.

In NorCal Division IV, No. 5 Kingsburg ousted No. 4 Fresno Christian in four sets. The Vikings will visit top-seed El Dorado.

Girls golf: Chowchilla’s Asterisk Talley advances

Asterisk Talley tied for second at the SoCal Regionals on Thursday.

She shot a 3-under par 71 at Los Serranos Golf Club in Chino Hills.
