HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Abington sweeps Hull in season-opening basketball doubleheader

It was a good first night for the Green Wave.

Abington High won both ends of a boys/girls basketball doubleheader against Hull to kick off the 2022-23 season on Monday.

The boys won, 67-61, as Connor Pease had 21 points and 13 rebounds with Tyler Staiti (17 points), Nate Duggan (14 points, 4 assists) and Hunter Maxwell (11 points, 8 rebounds) also starring.

Hull, which trailed 32-26 at halftime, was led by John Gianibas (16 points), Tommy Burke (13 points) and Logan Chenette (12 points, 7 rebounds).

The Abington girls won, 58-28, getting big games from Savvy Eriksen (21 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals), Ella Williamson (13 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals) and Mary Klein (10 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals). The Green Wave also got production from Rebecca Rix (6 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Sarah Flanagan (3 assists, 3 blocks, 2 rebounds) and Kenzie Litzenberger (7 rebounds).

In other high school action on Monday:

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hingham 81, Quincy 48: Liam McBride scored 25 points and Chase Mello added 16 for the Harbormen. Danny Adams scored 20 points for Quincy.

Plymouth South 57, Plymouth North 54: Declan Davis scored 18 points to lead South in the town showdown. Senior Hunter Byron led North with 25 points, and senior Ivan Darko added 15.

Carver 61, Sandwich 46: Tyler Lennox scored 32 points as the host Crusaders won their opener. J.J. Grimes added 16 points and 17 rebounds.

Cardinal Spellman 73, St Mary’s (Lynn) 62: The Cardinals won their opener at home as Jaydan Exalus led the way with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Kristian Simpson chipped in 18 points to go with strong defense. Luke McSharry, D'Anthony Amado and Umarei  Murray also played well.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Quincy 45, Hingham 25: Alyssa Hopps scored 13 points and Lena Waldron added 10 to lead the Presidents to a season-opening road win.

Blue Hills 49, Randolph 17: Sophomore Kathleen Murphy scored 15 points, and classmates Bella Sulfaro and Jen Trundley each added 8 for the Warriors (2-0).

Fontbonne Academy 73, New Mission 29: The Ducks got big games from Colleen Fogarty (14 points, 3 assists, 5 steals), Lilly Blow (13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals), Alix Abelard (11 points, 5 assists, 6 steals) and Tressa Murphy (10 points, 5 rebounds).

Case 64, West Bridgewater 45: In the loss, Dorothea McGrath had 16 points, Amanda Jacques added 13, and Grace Polen chipped in 11 for the Wildcats.

Plymouth North 45, Plymouth South 35: Maeve Moriarty scored 21 points to lead North in the town showdown. South’s Sarah Kenny had 15 points.

Archbishop Williams 37, Arlington Catholic 24: The Bishops won on the road.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Norwell/Abington 11, Ursuline Academy 3: The Clippers (2-0) got hat tricks from Penny Saich (2 assists) and Maddie McDonald (assist). Madeline Leivi had 2 goals and an assist, Sara Grace Edelman added a goal and 3 assists, and Molly Buccigross and Cali Pineau added goals. Libby Booras and Natasha Mikus each had a pair of assists.

In Saturday's opener, Norwell/Abington beat King Philip 8-0 behind Lainey Burns (hat trick), McDonald (2 goals, 5 assists) and goaltender Nicole Prescott (35 saves).

Canton 4, Westwood 0: The Bulldogs improved to 2-0. They beat Malden Catholic 5-1 in Saturday's opener.

BOYS HOCKEY

Rockland 3, Bishop Stang 1: Joey Salamone, Shane Kimball and Cooper Larouco scored as the Bulldogs (1-1) won on the road. Goaltender Joey Dow made 29 saves.

West/East Bridgewater 6, Upper Cape 1: On Saturday, senior captain Anthony Patete had 2 goals and 2 assists for WEB, and Brett Peterson, Matt Martineau, Christian Bates and Jack Pimental each added a goal.

Whitman-Hanson 5, Martha's Vineyard 2: On Saturday, Nolan Munroe made 28 saves, and Matt Solari broke a 2-2 tie in the third period to lift the Panthers.
