High school roundup: Alten strikes out 12 for JPII baseball in playoff win

Hunter Alten pitched a complete game and allowed no walks, four hits, and struck out a career-high 12 batters for the No.15 St. John Paul II Lions in an MIAA Division 5 Round of 32 playoff game against No. 18 Quaboag Cougars on Monday. The Lions won 7-0.

Mike Van Neste went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, Brady Meyer and Jake Walman each had a double, and Jacob Lenau, Meyer and Logan Our each finished with an RBI for JPII (11-9).

The Lions will play No. 2 Georgetown in the Round of 16 Wednesday.

Div. 3 Round of 32, No. 12 Sandwich 8, No. 21 Stoneham 3: The Blue Knights won their first game of the postseason and will move on to the Round of 16. Sandwich (15-6) will face Foxboro next at a date and time to be later determined.

Div. 4 Round of 32, No. 11 Case 3, No. 22 Mashpee 2: Brady James went 2-for-4 with a run scored but it was not enough as the Cardinals ended the Falcons' season. Mashpee (13-10) left 16 runners stranded and all three of Case's runs were unearned.

Div. 5 Round of 32, No. 9 Ayer Shirley 8, No. 24 Sturgis East 7: The Storm lost a heartbreaker to a walk-off home run by Zack Cebollero of the Panthers. This loss came after Sturgis East (9-9) won their preliminary round game 3-2 over South Shore Voke.

Div. 2 Round of 32, No. 13 Westfield 5, No. 20 Nauset 4: The Warriors gave up three runs in the last inning and lost to the Bombers in their first playoff game at Westfield-Bullens Field. Nauset finished the season 13-8.

Div. 1 Round of 32, No. 3 Catholic Memorial 5, No. 30 Barnstable 1: After a 6-4 victory over Hingham in the preliminary round, the Red Hawks lost to the Knights on Monday. Barnstable finished their season 11-9.

Div. 4 Round of 32, No. 5 Manchester-Essex 9, No. 28 Monomoy 5: The Sharks lost their second-round playoff game to the Hornets. Monomoy (14-8) shut out Lynn Voke 7-0 in the preliminary first round.

Div. 2 Round of 32, No. 21 Falmouth 7, No.12 Scituate 6: The Clippers won their first game of the postseason with an upset victory over the Sailors. They will go to the Round of 16 to host the No. 28 Pope Francis at a time and date to be determined.

BOYS TENNIS MIAA STATE PLAYOFFS:

Div. 2 Round of 32, No. 10 Mansfield 4, No. 23 Nauset 1: The Warriors lost in their first postseason match to the Hornets and ended their season 14-5.

Div. 4 Round of 32, No. 13 Nantucket 4, No. 20 Norwell 1: The Whalers beat the Clippers in their first playoff game and will move on to the Round of 16.

Div. 3 Round of 32, No. 8 Sturgis West 4, No. 25 Bishop Stang 1: The Navigators started their playoff run with a win over the Spartans. They will now face No. 9 Cape Cod Academy in the Round of 16 Wednesday.

Div. 4 Round of 32,  No. 12 Rockland 3, No. 21 Bourne 2: The Canalmen lost to the Bulldogs in their first match of the playoffs and finished their season 8-11.

GIRLS TENNIS MIAA STATE PLAYOFFS:

Div. 4 Round of 32, No. 11 Bourne 5, No. 22 Westport 0: The Canalmen swept the singles and doubles matches to win their first playoff game of the season and advance to the Round of 16.

Norma Barmashi beat Gloria Moniz 6-2, 6-2 in first singles, Emma Correira defeated Mikhaela Rego 6-0, 6-2 in second singles, and Audrey Caron got the win over Taliyah Raiche 6-0, 6-0 in third singles. Grace Gobeil and Sydney Fitzpatrick teamed up to beat Kyra Ferreira and Madison Pioorde 6-0, 6-0 and Zoe Ridl and Caroline Peddicord defeated Olivia Morris and Michaela Ramos 6-0, 6-0 for Bourne (11-8).

Div. 4 Round of 32, No. 8 Sturgis West 4, No. 25 Amesbury 1: Jillian Burdge won second singles 6-0, 6-0 over Addy Upson for the Navigators as they beat the Indians in their first playoff match.

Sarah Etre beat Meryn Upson in first singles 6-0, 6-1, Brodie Gerlach defeated Sam Bender 6-0, 6-1 and Olivia Van Beber and Victoria Tynan teamed up to beat Kristina Wright and Carolyn Williamson 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 for Sturgis West (12-2).

Div. 4 Round of 32, No. 14 Rockport 4, Nantucket 1: The Whalers lost in their first playoff match to the Vikings and finished their season 5-9.

Div. 4 Round of 32, No. 4 Monomoy 4, No. 29 Winthrop 1: The Sharks started their postseason with a win over the Vikings. They will face the winner of the match between No. 20 Archbishop Williams and No. 13 Ipswich on Thursday.

Div. 4 Round of 32, No. 5 St. John Paul II 5, No. 28 Millis 0: The Lions had a strong start to the playoffs as they swept the singles and doubles matches in a win over the Mohawks. JPII (18-1) will face the No. 20 Uxbridge on Wednesday in the Round of 16.

Div. 3 Round of 32, No. 17 Swampscott 3, No. 16 Cape Cod Academy 2: The Seahawks lost in their first match of the postseason to the Big Blue. Cape Cod Academy ended their season 6-8.

SOFTBALL MIAA STATE PLAYOFFS:

Div. 5 Round of 32, No. 18 Bourne 8, No. 15 Lee 7:  Jayden Morrell went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Canalmen as they defeated the Wildcats in their first game of the playoffs.

Hannah Greene was 2-for-5 and Mary Berio-Rowlands had two hits and an RBI for Bourne (8-11). The Canalmen will face No. 2 Turners Fall.

Div. 5 Round of 32, No. 2 Turners Fall 21, No. 34 Upper Cape 0: After a dominant 24-5 win over South Shore Voke in the preliminary round, the Rams got a taste of their own medicine with a loss to the Thunder. Upper Cape finished their season 12-10.

BOYS LACROSSE MIAA STATE PLAYOFFS:

Div. 4 Preliminary Round, No. 32 Falmouth Academy 8, No. 33 McCann Tech 5: The Mariners beat the Hornets in their first-round playoff matchup and will move on to play No. 1 Sandwich Wednesday.

Div. 4, Preliminary Round, No. 31 Monomoy 17, No. 34 Monson 2: The Sharks came out on fire in their first game of the playoffs with a huge win over the Mustangs. They have a tough game ahead as they take on the No. 2 Cohasset on Wednesday.
