FRIDAY

BASEBALL

Parrish Community 8, Braden River 0

Parrish Community's Jacob Traeger pitches against Braden River, Friday evening April 14, 2023.
Parrish Community's Jacob Traeger pitches against Braden River, Friday evening April 14, 2023.

PARRISH − Because of injuries to its pitching staff, the Parrish Community High baseball team turned to Jacob Traeger.

A reliever at the beginning of the season, Traeger has been called upon to start lately.

All the junior right-hander has done is put up zeroes, and not just in the runs column.

For his third straight start, Traeger departed without allowing a hit and combined with three relievers on a two-hit shutout, as Parrish Community blanked Braden River High, 8-0, on the Bulls’ Senior Night.

Friday, Traeger pitched four innings and walked two. One of the runners was erased on a pickoff.

That followed four innings of no-hit ball in a six-inning combined no-hitter against Bradenton Christian School and four hitless innings against Port Charlotte High on March 24 in a game he permitted one run.

So in his 12 innings as a starter, Traeger has allowed no hits and one run while walking four and striking out 15.

“It was a big change for me. I had to get my tempo down and not go 100% every pitch,” Traeger said.

Using a fastball and slider with an occasional curveball, Traeger is a strike thrower.

“I just hope they put it in play and we get the out,” he said.

“He does a good job of keeping guys off balance,” Parrish Community coach Brett Andrzejewski said of Traeger. “He can throw three pitches any time he wants.”

Andrzejewski then called upon senior left-handed pitcher Justin Ledger, junior Matthew Thompsen and junior Matthew Jaskiewicz for an inning each to complete the Bulls’ sixth shutout of the season and second straight.

“The relief guys haven’t had a whole lot of opportunities, but they were ready when their number was called,” Andrzejewski said.

Traeger particularly liked the work of one reliever.

“I like to see Justin Ledger come in,” he said. “He’s my favorite player. I like to cheer him on.”

The Bulls’ offense rewarded Traeger with a run in the first inning on a RBI single by Jonathan Maassen and three more in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Ayden Hinkel, a run-scoring double by Calin Heath and a dropped fly ball.

In stretching its home record to 5-0 this season, Parrish Community added four more in the sixth with Will Rawls’ two-run double the big hit. Caleb Hoch had a pinch-hit RBI single to cap the scoring.

Braden River, which defeated Parrish Community, 7-4, earlier in the season, has lost three straight and five of its past six.

“Tonight was probably our worst hitting day,” Pirates coach Gregory Creek said. “Their pitchers pitched ahead. They were throwing their secondary pitches for strikes and we couldn’t get it going. We had seven quality at-bats out of 25 plate appearances. They (the Bulls' pitchers) did their job.”

Both teams are back in action Tuesday: Parrish Community (14-4) at home against Lakewood Ranch High at 6 p.m., and Braden River (9-8) on the road at IMG Academy to face the Ascenders’ Silver team at 7 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

Cardinal Mooney 20, Saint Stephen's 9

Cardinal Mooney Catholic's Sean Laureano scores against Saint Stephen's Episcopal during a Class 1A-District 11 championship game Thursday evening, April 13, 2023, at Austin Smithers Stadium at John Heath Field at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota.
Cardinal Mooney Catholic's Sean Laureano scores against Saint Stephen's Episcopal during a Class 1A-District 11 championship game Thursday evening, April 13, 2023, at Austin Smithers Stadium at John Heath Field at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota.

SARASOTA − There was plenty of contrast between the Cardinal Mooney Catholic and Saint Stephen’s Episcopal boys lacrosse teams.

But the biggest difference proved to be the Cougars’ depth.

Cardinal Mooney used a couple of scoring spurts, one in each half, to defeat the Falcons, 20-9, in the Class 1A-District 11 championship game Thursday evening at Austin Smithers Stadium at John Heath Field.

Saint Stephen’s (11-2) entered with one loss, but was 12 spots behind the Cougars (11-7) in the FHSAA power rankings. That is because the Falcons had a minus-1.00 strength of schedule to 10.57 for Cardinal Mooney, the fifth-toughest in the state.

Another factor on the Cougars’ side was the fact they had won all 17 meetings with Saint Stephen’s dating back to the 2012 season.

Make it 18 in a row.

“When we play against teams that may not be as deep as others, we’re able to play a full game and show them what’s up,” Cardinal Mooney senior attacker Sean Laureano said. “Our depth definitely helped tonight. We have players all over the field who can score.”

Seven Cougars scored goals and eight made an impression on the stat sheet.

“The Mooney team is deeper than we are,” Saint Stephen’s coach Dan Rice said, also pointing to the fact a few of his key players were battling injuries. “It makes it a little more tougher against a team that is so deep.”

After Cardinal Mooney’s James Frankauski opened the scoring with the first of his five goals, the Falcons came back to take a 3-1 lead with Matt Vera scoring the latter two goals.

“That’s typical us, slow start,” Wagner said. “No matter who the opponent is, we like to spot them goals. That’s not surprising at all.”

The Cougars then went on a 5-0 spurt, getting goals from five different players: Hunter Sheffield, Frankauski, Giovanni Zanoni, Laureano and Cole Hunt to take the lead for good.

“We definitely responded good to their initial punch,” Laureano said. “We’ve shown when we have adversity like that we can power back.”

Cardinal Mooney tallied five straight before halftime, including three consecutive by Laureano, to take a 12-6 lead at the break.

The Falcons scored twice to open the second half - Joseph Droge on the power play and Grant Bettle from Justin Millican - to get within 12-8.

The Cougars put the game away with six goals to give them a season-high 20 and stretch their winning streak to five games.

“We’re not crazy, crazy deep, so we have to run with our guys. Luckily our front end guys have a lot of endurance and a lot of skill,” Cardinal Mooney coach Derek Wagner said. “They’re able to hold up for a good portion of the time. Then we’re able to sprinkle guys in there.”

Laureano led the way with six goals and four assists.

The regular season helped prepare Cardinal Mooney for the postseason.

“It helps us prepare for teams that might hit us hard initially, but we have to play the full game,” Laureano said.

Saint Stephen’s, which had scored double digits in all its wins, fell to 0-2 when it did not. The Falcons’ other loss was 14-8 to Bishop Verot out of Fort Myers.

“They were injured and they have some horses, but they don’t have enough to get them through a game,” Wagner said of Saint Stephen’s. “It makes it tough over time. They wear down. We knew that. It’s just a matter of staying on top of them and keeping the pressure on them.”

Still Wagner sees room for improvement before Cardinal Mooney, which was ranked third in Region 3, plays its first regional game Saturday at home.

“We let nine goals in, it probably should have been closer to six,” Wagner said. “And we probably should have scored a couple of more. So there are things to work on on both sides of the ball. The schedule and the stuff we went through during the regular season definitely helped.”

Ranked seventh in Region 3 coming in, Saint Stephen’s likely will receive a regional bid.

“Our guys didn’t quit,” Rice said. “Our boys played hard and gave it everything they’ve got. It’s all about depth.”

GIRLS LACROSSE

Manatee 18, Riverview 11

BRADENTON - Before his team’s district final against visiting Riverview, Manatee girls lacrosse coach Jeff McGuigan gave his players an uncomplicated pre-game message.

“All year long, we’ve been worried about everybody else,” the Hurricanes first-year coach said. “I just told them to enjoy themselves, and I think they really did.”

Winning a district title is supposed to be fun.

And behind the seven goals of Grace Knowles, and a defense which held the Rams to their second-lowest scoring output of the season, Manatee avenged an earlier Riverview win with an 18-11 triumph in the Class 2A-District 11 final on Thursday night at Joe Kinnan Field at Hawkins Stadium.

And there’s a good chance, Riverview head coach Ashley McLeod said, that the two teams will meet again in the first round of regional play. Quarterfinal play in Class 2A begins Wednesday.

“So you better believe,” McLeod said, “we’ll be prepared for that.”

Riverview defeated Manatee 20-15 in the sixth game of the season. The 20 goals were nearly one-fifth the total the Canes allowed all season. In that game, Ram Caroline Steinwachs scored seven, but Thursday night, injury sidelined Riverview’s second-leading scorer.

“But we’re still a strong team,” McLeod said. “We should have been able to carry on without her.”

The Rams (12-7) couldn’t. Leading scorer Susan Lowther finished with six goals, but minus Steinwachs, who had 56 goals to Lowther’s 103, Riverview simply didn’t have enough firepower. Emily and Katie Hazlett finished the game each with two goals.

In fact, McLeod said, if not for the play of goalie Mia Rey, who had 12 saves, the score would have been more decisive.

“Our goalie kept us in there,” she said. “She had some amazing stops.”

Besides Knowles’ seven goals, Penelope May scored five, Mallory Adams and Zoe Stewart two, and Gabby Waples and Cara Carter each had one.

Every time the Rams rallied, the Hurricanes answered back. With five minutes left, a goal by Katie Hazlett cut Manatee’s lead to 14-10. But 30 seconds later, Carter’s goal restored Manatee’s five-goal bulge.

A minute later, Hazlett’s second score again drew Riverview to within four. But then Knowles took over, scoring three goals over the final 2 minutes, 45 seconds. The sophomore went into the contest with a team-high 71 goals.

“We need to learn not to freak out,” McLeod said. “We have to learn to calm down, and we have to learn not to force.”

Said McGuigan, “(My team) played the best it’s played all year.”

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

Bradenton Christian 3, Cardinal Mooney 2

Bradenton Christian's McKinley Williams makes a great save against Cardinal Mooney during Beach Volleyball played at Cardinal Mooney on Tuesday April 11, 2023.

SARASOTA - The goal of an undefeated season for the Cardinal Mooney beach volleyball team got buried Tuesday under the sand of its own court by visiting Bradenton Christian.

Two undefeated teams, one ranked fifth in the state in Class 1A (Bradenton Christian), the other ranked eighth (Cardinal Mooney), promised a competitive match, and it took a three-set tiebreaking victory by the Panther duo of McKinley Williams and Jillian Zoerman for Bradenton Christian to rally from a 2-1 hole and win 3-2, improving to 11-0 on the season while handing the Cougars (13-1) a deflating defeat.

“It’s incredibly disappointing, for sure,” said Mooney head coach Chad Davis. “We had a goal (of going undefeated), and there are a lot of ramifications now. This will definitely affect the (playoff) seeding. We’ll have to travel there now for the first round of the play-in game, if we’re fortunate enough to win the district tournament.”

The victory was especially sweet for the Panthers, who lost three times last season to the Cougars. But after losing 4-1 in each of those first two matches, Ricky Tyrrell’s team fell 3-2 in the third, giving Mooney all it could handle.

And on a personal level, Tyrrell hadn’t beaten the Cougars, on sand or hardwood, in his six years at Bradenton Christian.

“So it was a big win for me,” he said. “Mark that one off on the coach’s list of teams to beat. I’m happy about that, but I’m very happy about how the girls played. They fought and they played well. Cardinal Mooney played very well, too. They didn’t give us anything. They hustled and earned points we should have earned.”

The Cardinal Mooney teams of No. 3 Kate Montesano and Riley Greene, and No. 5 Layla Larrick and Violet Weiser, had earned two-set victories over their Panther opponents, putting Mooney up 2-1 and needing one victory in the final two matches. Earlier, BC's No. 1 team of Faith Allen and Lexi Joyal had gotten the Panthers a three-set W.

But that one Cougar victory didn’t happen. With the two matches being played on adjacent courts, the Panther team of Julia Wiers and Lana Price took care of the Cougar team of Izzy Russell and Katie Powers in three sets, drawing BC even with Mooney at two games each.

Bradenton Christian's Jillian Zoerman makes a point against Cardinal Mooney's Gracie Page during Beach Volleyball played at Cardinal Mooney on Tuesday April 11, 2023.
Bradenton Christian's Jillian Zoerman makes a point against Cardinal Mooney's Gracie Page during Beach Volleyball played at Cardinal Mooney on Tuesday April 11, 2023.

The Cougars’ No. 2 team of Sawyer DeYoung and Helena Hebda lost the first set to Zoerman and Williams 21-16, but took the second 23-21 in a tiebreaker. The third and deciding set went back and forth before Zoerman and Williams put it away in a 15-13 victory.

“The two pairs were incredibly close,” Davis said. “Give BCS a ton of credit. I was very proud of the effort by all our pairs. All of our players played hard. The bottom line is you got to make plays in the moment, and we just didn’t. That’s part of the game, but it definitely wasn’t from a lack of effort.”

Mooney has one game left in its regular season, a home contest against Braden River on Tuesday. Bradenton Christian closes its regular season with a game at Venice on Wednesday and a home match against the Gulf Coast HEAT on Tuesday.
