SOFTBALL

New Philadelphia 2, John Glenn 1

NEW PHILADELPHIA — Reese Loveday scored on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the eighth inning to cap New Philadelphia's thrilling 2-1 win against visiting John Glenn in a battle of two East District softball powers on Wednesday at Tuscora Park.

The Division I Quakers (16-4) trailed 1-0 after four innings, but Loveday tied it with a two-out homer to center field.

John Glenn (15-4) rallied with singles from Brynna Wolford and Sarah Wayne to start the seventh. But Quakers ace Julia Miller, who struck out 17 in a complete game, got an inning-ending strikeout with runners on second and third with two outs.

After John Glenn failed to score in the top of the eighth, Loveday sparked the rally after being hit by a pitch. Miller then singled to right field and Ellie Mason was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. A strikeout followed, but Olivia Jackson's fielder's choice sent Lovejoy home.

John Glenn took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Alivia Boothe reached on a two-out single and scored when Wolford doubled.

Sydney Marshall struck out 11 in a complete game for John Glenn. She allowed eight hits and walked one.
