High School Roundup: Cambridge doubles teams headed for districts

SECTIONAL TENNIS

DOVER — Cambridge High's doubles team competed in day two of the sectional tournament at Dover City Park on Tuesday.

Tuesday was seeding matches for districts for all players who qualified for district play on Monday afternoon.

"This was some of the best tennis played all season long," Cambridge head coach Tim Gibson said. "All teams left it on the court and show great sportsmanship throughout every game."

CHS first doubles team of Caleb Stanberry and Blade Bachmann won their first match over West Holmes's James Barr and Brody Schaad by scores of 6-1, 6-4. Second doubles Brady Hannon and Justin Cole lost 4-6, 0-6 to East Liverpool’s first doubles Cole Daily and Preston Dawson.

Stanberry and Bachmann then played East Liverpool’s Daily and Dawson for the top seed at districts, in a epic three set match, before losing 4-6, 6-3, 5-7.

Hannon and Cole played Barr and Schaad from West Holmes for the third and fourth seed, with Cambridge winning a thriller 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(4).

BASEBALL

Cambridge 13, Union Local 0

MORRISTOWN — Cambridge High completed a successful road trip to Union Local on Tuesday, returning home with a convincing 13-0 victory behind the pitching efforts of Andy Ogle.

Ogle shut down UL to pick up the win on the mound, throwing a complete game shutout allowing one hit and over six innings, striking out six.

Junior Jake Valentine led the 13-hit Bobcats' offense with a 3-for-4 night with two doubles, single with two RBIs. Bruce Murdock and Angelo Rocco each contributed a double, single with an RBI, while senior Caleb Bond belted a two-run home run with a single. Drew Yanico chipped in with a pair of base hits for the winners.

Cambridge improves to 14-5 with the road victory.

John Glenn 12, West Muskingum 2 (6 inn.)

Blade Barclay drove in four runs with a pair of singles as the Muskies (13-7, 9-4 MVL-Big School) overcame an early deficit to earn an MVL crossover win in New Concord.

West (2-14 MVL-Small School) led 2-0 after scoring twice in the second inning, but John Glenn exploded with 11 runs over the fourth and fifth innings to blow it open.

Barclay had a pair of two-run singles and Noah Winland a two-run single of his own.

Zander McCance tossed 3 2/3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to get the win in relief of Logan Finley, who went 2 1/3 and allowed two runs.

Hunter Porter allowed five earned runs in 4 1/3 innings to take the loss. He struck out three and walked one.

Meadowbrook 7, River View 4

Easton Eibel and Hayden Loy drove in two runs and had three of the Colts' eight hits in an MVL crossover win at Ron Tisko Field.

Brady McManaway added a double and single for Meadowbrook (12-8, 9-6 MVL-Small), while Josh Hupp tossed a complete game to get the win.

Loy's RBI single in fifth drove in McManaway to break a 4-all tie after four innings.

Owen Hettinger had a double and single and Cruz Mobley and Trace Davis doubles for River View (10-10, 8-8 MVL-Big), which led 4-0 after an inning.

Davis, a lefty, allowed only one earned run in five innings. He struck out four and didn't walk a batter.

SOFTBALL

John Glenn 6, Maysville 3

The Muskies pounded out 13 hits and got two scoreless innings of relief from Sydney Marshall in an MVL-Big School win at the Maysville Athletic Complex.

Maysville loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning after Shyann Havens walked and Hannah Fulkerson and Paige Burns singled, but the Panthers managed only one run after a pop out and strikeout followed Kori Kepler's RBI single.

Marshall singled home the tying run in the third and Alivia Boothe, who had a team-high three hits, came around on an error in left field.

It stayed 2-1 until the fifth when Marshall singled home Abby Buchtel with one out and and Emma Johnson singled home Boothe to make it 4-1.

Maysville got within 4-3 with a two-run sixth on Fulkerson's RBI double and Burns' run-scoring single, but a failed squeeze attempt and two strikeouts ended the threat.

Maysville never got closer.

Hannah Bendle cracked a double and also pitched five innings to get the win. Sarah Wayne added two singles.

Mallori Bradley pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and no walks in a losing effort. The Panthers had five errors.

Buckeye Trail 14, East Canton 4

EAST CANTON — Visiting Buckeye Trail started quickly Tuesday with a seven run first inning en route to a 14-4 road win over East Canton in Inter-Valley Conference softball action.

Buckeye Trail banged out 12 hits with senior Abby Wayble leading the way with a 4-for-5 night with four singles and three RBIs. Morgan Watson belted a home run and doubled with five RBIs. Emma Smith singled three times with an RBI, Kaydence Starr smacked a solo home run for the winners.

Gwyn McElwain collected the pitching win for Trail, working six innings allowing four runs on four hits with four Ks and two walks.

River View 7, Meadowbrook 6

Raelee McPeak had a double among three hits and knocked in a pair of runs to lead the Lady Bears past the Colts.

Cayla Shrimplin doubled and scored twice, Williamson came home twice, Abby Lorenz knocked in two runs and Bridgette Bible earned the win, giving up six runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

Kendyl Cannon had three of the Colts' five hits and knocked in a run and Kenzi Combs took the loss, giving up three runs on two hits with three walks in 1 1/3 innings.
