HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Canton girls lacrosse hangs on against Oliver Ames

The Canton High girls lacrosse team scored a close win over Hockomock League rival Oliver Ames on Wednesday.

Sierra Abbot, who had a hat trick, scored the winning goal to put the Bulldogs up 8-6. The Tigers responded with a goal to cut the deficit to 8-7 with two minutes remaining, but Canton held on for the win.

Ashley Balunas made seven saves in the victory while Nora Giannacopoulos tallied her first varsity goal.

In the loss, Catie Wilson scored a game-high four goals. Taylor McAndrw, Erin Cottom and Leanna Hudson scored the other goals.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Bridgewater-Raynham 18, Rockland 6: Emily Keefe led the way offensively for the Trojans with 9 points (seven goals, two assists) while Ashley McLaren chipped in four goals and an assist. Lexi White and Audrey Lambert each had two goals and an assist. Ainsley Yates played well in goal.

Taunton 13, Stoughton 9: Morgan Groppi scored six goals for the Black Knights in the loss.

Archbishop Williams 18, St. Joseph's Prep 4: Avery Valicenti and Clare O'Keefe each scored four goals as the Bishops won the Catholic Central League game. Caroline Batchelder (three goals, three assists), Caroline Hurley (two goals) and Molly Madaio (two goals) also starred.

Norwell 14, Abington 2: Charlise Cox (five goals, three assists, four draw controls), Margot Bonnevie (three goals) and Maeve Ross (two goals) starred for the Clippers (3-1). Brielle DeJesus played well defensively for the Green Wave in the loss.

BOYS LACROSSE

Norwell 17, Abington 2: Hunter Grafton and Patrick Prewitt scored in the loss.

Marshfield 14, Bridgewater-Raynham 6: Charlie Carroll (four goals), Graham Schofield, Tom Carroll (two), Will Rand (three), Andrew Robbins, Nic Cupples (three) and Jon Sullivan scored for Marshfield. Sean McInnis, Dawson DuBose and Patrick Concannon all scored for B-R (3-1).

Canton 13, Oliver Ames 6: Ben Reardon scored three goals and had an assist in the loss while Shawn Teehan chipped in three points (goal, two assists).

Southeastern 11, Upper Cape Tech 4: Jerry Hale (four goals) and William Lannan (two goals, two assists) each had a 4-point day for the Hawks. Tyler Davidson made 10 saves in the win while Zach Pechulis scored twice.

Hull 13, Mashpee 3: The Pirates improve to 5-0 on the season.

Arlington Catholic 17, Cardinal Spellman 7: Matt O'Donnell scored three goals while D'Anthony Amado had four assists for the Cardinals.

Bishop Guertin 9, Hingham 8: The Harbormen lost in triple-overtime.

Thayer Academy 17, Lawrence Academy 3: The Tigers (2-2) won on the road.

BASEBALL

Whitman-Hanson 10, Plymouth South 0 (6 inn.): Evan Yakavonis threw a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and just one walk in the win. Zack Casey sparked the offense with an RBI-double early and he scored three runs. Dave Martin had three hits.

BC High 15, Catholic Memorial 1: The Eagles hit five home runs in the win, highlighted by a pair from Nick McCabe.

Milton 9, Needham 1: Scott Longo picked up his second win of the season by tossing four innings of one-run ball for the Wildcats (5-0). Longo also went 3-for-3 with a triple and a double. Andrew Hunt (two innings) and Ryan Kelly (one) didn't allow a run in relief.

Weymouth 6, Brookline 2: Jack Reyes earned the win on the mound with five solid innings for the Wildcats. Dylan Umano had two RBIs while Matt Suplee, Gill Dolan and Andrew Daley each had two hits.

Walpole 3, Braintree 2: The Wamps dropped the Bay State Conference game.

Canton 12, Stoughton 5: Freshman Chris Pirrera pitched well in the win, allowing one earned run and striking out three over 4⅔ innings. Kyle Redquet had 2⅓ innings of shutout relief.

Mashpee 6, Carver 1: The Crusaders lost the South Shore League game.

Duxbury 17, Pembroke 4: The Dragons totalled 15 hits and 13 RBIs in the offensive explosion.

Apponequet 2, East Bridgewater 1: The Vikings dropped the non-league game.

Plymouth North 5, Hanover 3: The Eagles sealed the win with a triple play and George Slauson drove in the winning RBI. On the game-ending play, pitcher D.C. Brown made a diving catch on a bunt attempt. He threw the ball to second baseman Killian Murphy (covering first base) for the second out and Murphy threw the ball to center fielder Logan Zemotel, who ran to second base for the third out. Cody Quinn pitched six innings, allowing one earned run for North. Mike Hannon was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Hanover's Gabe Knudsen pitched 6 innings in the loss, allowing seven hits and an earned run. Johnny McDonald went 2-for-4.

Hingham 5, Scituate 0: Junior Teddy Swanson pitched a shutout in his first varsity start.

Bridgewater-Raynham 7, Lincoln-Sudbury 6: Senior captain Casey Wensley belted a walk-off grand slam for the Trojans.

Marshfield 5, North Quincy 2: Jack Keane earned the complete-game win on the mound with 10 strikeouts, four hits, no walks and one earned run. Jack Croft had two hits, a walk and a two-run double. Brandon Raftes had a two-run triple. Aidan Bridges threw 3 1/3 scoreless relief innings for NQ, and Charlie Baker and Kevin Pritchard each drove in runs.

Mansfield 5, Oliver Ames 2: Drew Hall had three hits, and Harrison Fitzpatrick and Patrick finnerty added two each for OA.

SOFTBALL

Notre Dame Academy 6, Archbishop Williams 4: Sophomore Piper Levin was 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple and three RBI. Claire Ferrara had two hits, and Shannon Macleod pitched a complete-game three-hitter with seven strikeouts.

Marshfield 12, North Quincy 0: Emily Harper (three hits, home run), Haylie McPhee (two-run home run), Jess Morrison (three hits, four RBIs) and Graci Figueiredo (three RBIs) led the way offensively for the Rams (3-1). Freshman Sophia Blanco threw a two-hit shutout.

Oliver Ames 17, Mansfield 9: Devon Morris belted two home runs, scored four runs and had four RBIs as the Tigers scored in every inning. Maddie Homer had three hits, three runs and three RBI while Katherine Farley had a home run and five RBIs. Crystaliah Covel also hit a home run.

Silver Lake 20, Quincy 0: Delany Moquin, who also had a multi-hit day at the plate, tossed a five-inning no-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Lakers (4-0). Madyson Bryan had four hits and three RBIs. In her first varsity start, Addison Willett went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.

Stoughton 9, Canton 8: The Bulldogs won on a walk-off. Jess Wright led the way offensively with three hits, while Olivia Mackwell, Kailyn Durham, Anna Lehan, Sam Grady and Kiara Redquest all had two-hit days.

Carver 21, Mashpee 4: Maddie Butler went 4-for-7 at the plate and scored five times while also earning the win on the mound (seven innings, three hits). Shortstop Paige Medico also played well as the Crusaders played didn't commit an error. Hannah Kaiser and Jenna Newell both had three-hit days.

Walpole 11, Braintree 2: The Wamps dropped the Bay State Conference game.

Milton 10, Needham 0: MK Maloney struck out eight batters in a six-inning shutout.

Plymouth South 3, Whitman-Hanson 2: Plymouth South won the Patriot League game.

Brookline 14, Weymouth 11: The Wildcats lost in extra innings. Bella Pires hit a lead-off home run in the loss.

Hanover 7, Plymouth North 4: Noey Giardina belted a first-inning, three-run home run in the win for the Hawks (3-0). Abby Hanna had three hits, including a double, and two RBIs. McKenzie Foley had a home run and scored twice while Abby Minasi had two hits, including a triple. Abby Smith earned her third win on the mound.

Milton Academy 15, Academy at Penguin Hall 1 (5 inn.): The Mustangs (3-0) won on the road.

BOYS TENNIS

Dartmouth 5, Middleboro 0: The Sachems drop to 0-3.

Cohasset 5, Norwell 0: The Skippers won the South Shore League game.

Hingham 4, Scituate 1: Parker Schultz, Thomas Fabrizio, Ben LaRhette, Nick Dubois, Teddy Reilly and Logan Price all won in straight sets for the Harbormen.

North Quincy 4, Marshfield 1: The Raiders won the Patriot League match.

Plymouth South 4, Whitman-Hanson 1: Brady Wright won at first singles for W-H.

GIRLS TENNIS

Plymouth South 3, Whitman-Hanson 2: The Panthers won the Patriot League match.

Braintree 3, Walpole 2: Haily Pham, Jolin Yang and Emma Townsend all won singles matches for the Wamps.

Marshfield 3, North Quincy 2: The Rams took the Patriot League match.

Oliver Ames 5, Mansfield 0: Hannah Farber (first), Olivia Querzoli (second) and Stella Zachos (third) swept the singles matches for the Tigers while Emily Beaulieu/Ava Barth (first) and sisters Marina/Ella Mierzwinski (second) took the doubles matches.

GIRLS GOLF

Duxbury 6, Cohasset 0: Harper Capilli, Layla Penn, Hannah Stout, Mary Kate Higgins and Hailey Flynn each won their matches for the Dragons.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

North Quincy 3, Quincy 0: The Raiders won the rivalry game.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Bridgewater-Raynham 84, Dartmouth 51: B-R's Nethica Auguste was a triple-winner, taking the long jump, triple jump and 200m. Camden Strandberg won the mile and high jump.

Natick 76, Weymouth 60: Casey Dempsey won the long jump (15-9) and 100 (:13.4) for Weymouth (0-2). Other Winners for the Wildcats were: Ella Bates (2-mile, 11:58); Izzy Galusha (400m, 1:02.10); Gracie Richard (800m, 2:24.8); Leah Goodine (triple jump, 31-6); Ainsley Weber (javelin, 109-0); and Isabella Cummings (400m hurdles, 1:11.90).

Silver Lake 72, Whitman-Hanson 64: Senior captain Sydney Pires starred for W-H (1-1), winning the 200m (:28.26), triple jump (33-11) and long jump (15-8.5) and taking second in the 100m. Other winners for the Panthers: Savannah Kamperides (400m, :66.86); McKenna McCarthy (mile, 5:49.74); Leila Keaney (100m hurdles, :18.88); and Brianna Codio (shot put, 30-07).

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

East Bridgewater 121, Abington 15: Chris Oman was a triple-winner for the Vikings, taking the long jump, 100m and 200m. Double-winners for EB included Brennan Shea (400m hurdles, high jump), Aiden Toomey (400m, triple jump) and Nic Uzzo (mile, 2-mile).

Hingham 83, Plymouth North 53: The Harbormen got two wins each from Ryan Gates (400m hurdles in 1:01; 800m in 2:09), Brendan Burm (mile in 4:43; 2-mile in 10:40); and Cole Sampson (long jump in 20-3; javelin in 140-7). Also for Hingham: Sam Reffue won the 100m (:11.72) and was second in the 200m (:23.7); Bryce Botelho won the 400m (:53.28) and anchored the 4x400m with a :50.5 split; Griffin Coppola was second in the long jump (19-9), triple jump (36-1) and 400m (:54.1); Adam Frisoli won the shot put  (38-11); Sean Curry won the high jump (5-8); and AJ Barrett won the 110m hurdles (:18.5).

Silver Lake 98, Whitman-Hanson 38: For W-H (0-2), Jake Cappelletti won the 110m hurdles (:16.92) and was second in the 100m (:11.97), and Bobby Silva won the 400m (:55.77) and ran on the winning 4x400m relay team with Anthony Pires, Logan Bourgelas and Noah Roberts. Roberts also was second in shot put (36-10) and discus (100-10).
