MIAA

The MIAA announced it will re-instate post-game handshakes, starting Feb. 1. The change in policy stems from a recommendation of the new Board of Directors working group that has taken up the mantle of crafting COVID rules from the disbanded MIAA COVID-19 Task Force.

In a release, MIAA executive director Dr. Robert Baldwin wrote: "Promoting the value of sportsmanship - behaviors that instill respect for self, team, opponents, officials, rules and the game itself, is the cornerstone of athletic competition. Considering the frequent physical contact that takes place during an athletic contest, the risk of once again completing the post-contest handshake is minimal compared to the benefits of the respectful action that it promotes.

"This decision comes with the strong recommendation to follow established mitigation strategies such as sanitation stations before and after a handshake line (for sports without gloves), fist bumps, and reminders not to touch the face."
