High School Roundup: CHS tennis sends pair of doubles teams to districts

DOVER — Cambridge High enjoyed a solid first day of sectional tennis action at Dover City Park on Monday afternoon.

Both the Bobcats' number one doubles team of Caleb Stanberry and Blade Bachmann along with the number two doubles team of Brady Hannon and Justin Cole advanced on to the district tournament.

Stanberry and Bachman captured a pair of 6-0, 6-1 wins over Steubenville Central Catholic’s Luke Kanezelberger and Matt Mitch and St. Clairsville's James Barr and Brody Schaad.

Hannon and Cole the third seed, took a 6-0, 6-1 over Baylor and Jackson from Coshocton. Followed by a 7-6(6), 6-2 victory over Alex Jones and Kurt Kaufman from Hiland.

In singles action Andrew Daymut won his first match beating East Liverpool’s Damon Stansberry 6-4,3-6,6-2, then lost hits second match to the number overall seed from West Holmes Hunter Ellis 0-6, seed 0-6.

Noah Mitchell lost is opening round match to Steubenville’s Austin Zigurski 0-6, 1-6. James Goggin won his first two matches beating East Liverpool’s Liam Campbell 6-0,6-0 and Winning 7-6(5), 6-2 over Hiland’s Wyatt Freeman, before losing to number 4 overall seed from Steubenville Central Catholic’s Thomas Kanezelberger 1-6, 2-6 in the finals.

Both doubles teams will take part in district play on May 21st at Ohio University’s tennis center.

BASEBALL

John Glenn 5, New Philadelphia 3

NEW PHILADELPHIA — Blade Barclay collected two hits and knocked in three runs, propelling the visiting Muskies (12-7) to victory.

John Glenn struck for two runs in the first. Colt Emerson led off with a double then scored on a Barclay single. Barclay, who took second on a throw home and third on an error, came home on an Avery Parmer sac fly.

Barclay added a RBI single in the fifth, Noah Wellmeier swatted a run-scoring double in the sixth and Colin Campbell's RBI single in the seventh provided an insurance run.

Emerson added three hits and scored twice, Campbell hit two singles and Noah Winland also doubled in the win.

Bexlee Woodard fanned seven in 5 1/3 innings for the victory. He allowed three runs on four hits, while Aydan Thompson got the final two outs of the sixth and Emerson threw a scoreless seventh for the save.

Cambridge 8, Morgan 5

Caleb Bond hit a triple and double and knocked in three runs to lead host Cambridge, who used a three-run second inning to take the lead for good.

Cambridge led 3-1 after one inning before the Raiders plated three in the second. Wade Pauley brought home Kole Searl on a sac fly to tie the game at 3, and Chase McGill scored the go-ahead run after a Cambridge error on Carson Copeland's groundball.

But, Bond hit a bases-loaded triple in the home half of the second to put the Bobcats ahead for good, 6-4.

Levi Brown and Pauley each doubled for Morgan, which was held to four hits, while Pauley took the loss, allowing eight runs, five earned, on two hits with six walks and four strikeouts in four innings.

Keaton Kyser threw four innings of scoreless relief to earn the win for Cambridge.

Buckeye Trail 6, Tuscarawas Central Catholic 1

OLD WASHINGTON — Host Buckeye Trail improved to an impressive 13-4 record with a 6-1 victory over Tuscarawas Central Catholic on Monday in Inter-Valley Conference baseball action.

Nick Neuhart picked up the win on the mound for Trail, working six plus innings allowing four hits with eight Ks and three walks.

Garrett Burga paced the offense with a pair of singles with three RBIs, Braden Williams singled with two RBIs. Neuhart helped his own cause with an RBI double.

SOFTBALL

John Glenn 3, Sheridan 1

NEW CONCORD — Sophomore Sydney Marshall tossed a three-hitter with nine strikeouts and four walks, as the host Lady Muskies (17-4) picked up a win after completing a suspended game in MVL play.

Alivia Boothe hit a solo home run in the second, Abby Buchtel's sac bunt brought in Hannah Bendle in the third, and Buchtel swatted a homer in the fifth to account for John Glenn's runs.

Booth, Marshall and Sydney Johnson each had two hits for the Muskies.

Addison Grosse hit a RBI triple in the seventh to account for the Generals' only run, and Cora Hall took the loss, scattering eight hits, fanning three and walking two in a complete game.
