BASEBALL

Venice 13, Cardinal Mooney 1

SARASOTA − The Venice High baseball team did not have time to dwell on Tuesday night’s loss.

Venice bounced back with a 13-1 rout of Cardinal Mooney Catholic High on Wednesday at Christie Field.

Falling 5-4 Tuesday night allowing five unearned runs to Riverview on the road, Venice came back and broke a 1-all tie with 10 runs in the third inning.

That enabled Venice coach Craig Faulkner to liberally use his pitching staff.

Making his second varsity appearance and first start, freshman Carter Cox worked the first two innings. The left-hander fanned the first two hitters he faced. In the second inning Cox nicely worked out of a second-and-third, no-out jam by allowing one run.

“It was nice for him to get a start and see what he can do,” Faulkner said of Cox, who also made a nice diving stop in center field after his pitching stint. “He’s got to keep the ball down, but he’s got three pitches he throws for strikes. We’re expecting a lot of things from him over the next four years.”

Following Cox were senior right-hander Peter Liakokos, junior right-handed side-wider Ely Houston and big lefty senior Hunter Possehl for one inning. Except for a leadoff walk issued by Possehl, all three relievers were perfect.

“It was nice to see Ely. It was nice to see Liakakos get an inning,” Faulkner said. “It was nice to see some guys get in and get a little bit of work.”

Venice got four hits, was hit three times, received two walks, had a sacrifice bunt and stolen base along with taking advantage of four Cardinal Mooney (1-3) errors and a wild pitch in the third inning.

Leadoff hitter Jon Embury, Nick Dunn, Possehl and Kyle Buchold all knocked in two runs for Venice (2-2).

“A lot of guys did some nice things and got some base hits,” Faulkner said. “It’s nice to see.”

The afternoon got off to a rough start for the Cougars, as Embury opened the game with a triple when Cardinal Mooney’s center fielder and right fielder collided.

Jack MacKinnon opened on the mound for the Cougars and allowed 10 runs (two earned) in 2 ⅓ innings.

Venice continues its string of three road games in three days when it heads to Tampa to face Jesuit (4-0). Sophomore left-hander Jackson Lucas will get the start for Venice.

Cardinal Mooney will look to snap a three-game losing streak Friday at home against Lakewood Ranch High.

TUESDAY

BASEBALL

Parrish Community 1, Lakewood Ranch 0

LAKEWOOD RANCH − For more than six innings, Keegan Duquette had it all going on.

The Parrish Community High pitcher had command of all three pitches and he knew the unspoken situation.

With one out in the sixth inning, Duquette, making only his second varsity start, tried to rush the finish.

After two walks, Bulls coach Brett Andrzjewski walked to the mound and made the tough decision to take the ball from Duquette.

Handing the ball to Jacob Traeger turned out to be the correct decision.

Traeger recorded the final two outs of a combined no-hitter as Parrish Community squeaked out a 1-0 victory over Lakewood Ranch High in a battle of unbeatens on Tuesday night at the Mustangs field.

For 6 ⅓ innings, the 6-foot-9 Duquette commanded his fastball, curveball and changeup. Entering the seventh, the Mustangs (2-1) had two base runners one on a hit by pitch and the other on a walk. The latter runner was erased by a 5-4-3 double play.

But after getting an out in the seventh, Duquette lost rhythm. His pitches were up in the strike zone.

“When he’s cruising like that, it’s hard to get him out,” Andrzjewski said. “It was tough. But you could tell he ran out of steam.”

“I was just getting a little hyped up,” he said.

With the potential tying and winning run on base, Traeger got a fielder’s choice grounder and a fly ball to end the game.

“I’m just glad we got it done,” Duquette said. “I trust my pitching staff.”

Andrzjewski is easing Duquette into the rotation after playing for the Bulls’ basketball team and coming off a baseball offseason when he was injured.

“Keegan pitched his butt off,” Andrzjewski said. “He hasn’t been on the mound a whole lot. For him to make that comeback, it’s pretty special for him.”

Duquette struck out eight, including the side in the sixth inning.

“This was the best one I got,” Duquette said of his outing.

“He did well,” Lakewood Ranch coach Colton Chupp said of Duquette. “He mixed up his pitches and kept us off balance. We needed to make some adjustments with two strikes and try to put the ball in play more, but that didn’t happen.”

The Mustangs’ trio of pitchers - starter Lochlan Radloff (4 innings, 2 hits, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts), Nathan Johnson (2 innings, 1 unearned run, 2 walks) and Wes Geiger (1 inning, 1 hit) - did their part.

“Our pitcher did well,” Chupp said. “Tough game.

Parrish Community (3-0) scored the lone run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Leadoff hitter Calin Heath was hit by a pitch, took third on a two-base error and scored on Will Rawls’ slow chopper to shortstop.

“We were trying to scratch one out the whole time,” Andrzjewski said.
