HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Freshman Enright's goals help JPII girls soccer to win

Freshman Michaela Enright scored two goals for the St. John Paul II girls soccer team in a 4-0 shutout win over the Monomoy in the season opener on Thursday in girls soccer action.

Emma Tucker and Aniela Gallagher scored one goal apiece and Ella Cheney added two assists, Teagan Forde tacked on an assist, and Emma Collette and Maggie Crofford teamed up for the shutout in goal for JPII (1-0-0).

In other high school action on Thursday:

GIRLS SOCCER

Sandwich 2, Martha’s Vineyard 0: Sophia Wanat (first half) and Abi Kinney (second half) combined for the clean sheet for the Blue Knights as they shut out the Vineyarders. Zoe Richards scored in the first minute of play and Lily Hoffman scored off a cross from senior co-captain Riley Morrison for Sandwich (1-1-0). Julia Sutton, Ayla Whitney and Kailyn Jaroszuk all played well defensively for the Blue Knights. Martha's Vineyard (1-1-0) lost their first game of the season.

Nantucket 4, Sturgis East 3: Adney Brannigan and Chelsea Gross each scored two goals for the Whalers as they beat the Storm in a close matchup. Claire Misurelli and goalie  Ella Scott also played well for Nantucket (2-0-0).

Pembroke 1, Nauset 1: Olivia Avellar scored the lone goal for the Warriors as they finished in a draw with the Titans. Caroline Kennard added an assist and Pepper Escher was the goalkeeper for Nauset (1-0-1).

Hull 7, Mashpee 1: Hailey Garcia scored the lone goal for the Falcons, but it was not enough as the Pirates won. Catie O'Neil assisted on the Garcia goal and Norah Paolini finished with 16 saves.

Falmouth 5, Barnstable 0: Kassia Jablecki scored the first goal off an assist from Riley O'Brien in the first half for the Clippers as they shutout the Red Hawks.

Ally Underhill slid the second goal past the goalkeeper with help from Elizabeth Janes for Falmouth (1-0-0). Underhill followed up that goal and scored off an initial shot from Janes. Scarlett Oberton made the next goal off of an initial shot by Underhill and Eleanor Ralston scored the last goal off from Janes. Erin Murphy, Saw Wrede, Abby Fernandez, Kassia Jablecki, and Tatyum Cox also played well for Falmouth.

Sturgis West 4, Cape Cod Academy 1: Lili Shanahan had 18 saves for the Seahawks, but that was enough to save them from the Navigators. Jenna Marsh had the lone goal and three shots for Cape Cod Academy (0-1-0).

BOYS GOLF

Sandwich, 241, Nauset 277: Luke Greeley shot a 35 to lead the Blue Knights to victory over the Warriors at Sandwich Hollows (par 36 course). Thomas Hurley shot a 37, Blaise Chatigny ended with a 39, James Murray finished with a 2 and Emma Abramson and Zaren Graff followed up with a 44 for Sandwich (3-1).

Jack Martin led Nauset (1-2) with a score of 40, Charles Sullivan and Jack Cronin each shot a 42, Chris Barber finished with a 48 and Andrew Bernadi followed up with a 52.

Martha’s Vineyard 234, Barnstable 269: Nick Ben David finished with a low score of 36 for the Vineyarders as they beat the Red Hawks to remain unbeaten. Jake Glasgow had a 37, Richie Combra added a 39, Jack Walsh followed up with a 40, Christian Carroll finished with a 43 and Ryan Harding ended with a 45 for Martha's Vineyard (2-0).

Chad Tordone and Colon Gleason each shot a 38, Jake Kayaian had a 44, Cam Levesque finished with a 46, Ian Devito ended with a 50 and Shawn Fredo followed up with a 53 for Barnstable (0-2).

Bourne 252, Seekonk 310: Nate McDonnell and Owen Burrette each shot a 39 for the Canalmen in a win over the Warriors at Brookside. Griffin Kelly shot a 41, Ryan Burgess followed up with a 43 and Jack Ferriera and Luca Finton each scored a 45 for Bourne (2-0).

St. John Paul II 4 ½ at Sturgis West 1 ½: Timmy Adams led the way with a 38 for the Lions in a win over divisional opponent Navigators at Quashnet Valley Country Club.

Adams won 2-and-1 over Ben Halunen, Jack Carstensen beat Mya Murphy, freshman Sam Scioletti rolled to a 5-and-4 win and freshman Harry Baroni won 2-up win for JPII (2-0). The lone winner for Sturgis West (1-2) was Jack Plaszay, who won his match 2-up.

Falmouth 247, Dennis-Yarmouth 325: Declan Norris shot an even-par 36 with one birdie and one bogey for the Clippers as the beat the Dolphins the season opener.

Nantucket 6, Rising Tide 0: The Whalers shutout the Herons for their first win of the season.

BOYS SOCCER

St. John Paul II 2, Monomoy 2: As the Lions trailed the Sharks with less than 10 minutes left in the game, freshman Nico Sullivan and junior Carlos Siguencia each scored to end the game in a draw.

Assists came from Sebastian Ramos and Nico Traykovski for JPII (0-0-1) and the team

unanimously voted freshman Cody Boghdan as “player of the match” for his relentless midfield play.

Sturgis East 1, Dennis-Yarmouth 1: Captain Thomas Terry scored the first goal of the game midway through the first half for the Storm, but they ended in a tie with the Dolphins. Thomas Terry and David Belino also had strong games for Sturgis East (0-0-1).

Hull 2, Mashpee 2: Preston Joia played well in goal for the Falcons as they tied with the Pirates. Dylan Williams and Thanos Pavlo each scored a goal for Mashpee (0-0-2).

Martha’s Vineyard 3, Sandwich 0: The Vineyarders shutout the Blue Knights in their season opener.

Nauset, 2 Nantucket 1: Alexis Pena scored the lone goal for Nantucket (0-1-0), but it was not enough to beat Nauset (1-0-0).

Barnstable 1, Falmouth 0: The Red Hawks opened up their season with a close win over the Clippers.

CROSS COUNTRY

Nauset Boys 20, Canton Boys 37: Junior Will Crowell won the race in 18:39 for the Warriors as they beat the Bulldogs. Junior Hunter Hunt grabbed third place with a time of 20:48, senior Captain Malcolm Stewart finished fourth in 20:56, and junior Ethan Beer placed fifth in 21:05 for Nauset (1-0).

Nauset Girls  21, Canton Girls  34: The Warriors girls opened the season with a win over the Bulldogs led by Junior Angela Diana, who won the race with a time of 30.05.

Sophomore Ava Needel snagged second place in 30.20, freshman Alyssa Hutchinson finished fourth (31.10) and captain Jill Parrott finished sixth with a time of 32.50 for Nauset (1-0).

FIELD HOCKEY

Sturgis East 2, St. John Paul II 1: Molly Reino scored the first goal with four minutes left in the first quarter with an assist from Jillian Burdge for the Storm as they went on to beat the Lions in the season opener.

Keira Shinnick scored with an assist from Molly Reino with two minutes left in the first quarter for Sturgis East (1-0-0). The lone goal was made by senior Emily Gorsuch and junior Maya DeLancey played well in goal for JPII (0-1-0)
