High school roundup: Lakeville South bests Cretin-Derham Hall in OT in boys hockey

Aidan Willis scored 49 seconds into overtime as Lakeville South slipped past Cretin-Derham Hall 5-4 in Class 2A battle on Thursday.

Neither team led by more than a goal, each trading blow for blow. The game was tied after the end of each period, with Cretin-Derham Hall’s Colin Scanlan scoring with just over six minutes remaining in the third period to tie the game at 4-4. From there it remained tied until Willis’s game-winner, his second of the night. Tate Pritchard also scored twice for Lakeville South (13-5-1). Four different players scored for the Raiders (14-7-1).

Other scores: St. Thomas Academy beat Mahtomedi 3-1; Roseville beat Forest Lake 4-1; Tartan beat Simley 7-0; Blake beat Gentry Academy 7-3; Mounds View beat Hastings 4-2; Woodbury beat Stillwater 3-2 in overtime.

Girls hockey

Lakeville North 4, Apple Valley 3: Gracie Hanson grabbed a hat trick in regulation and Hannah Weckman added the game-winner in overtime to propel Lakeville North (17-7-0) past Apple Valley (17-6-1) at home.

Hanson provided the energy for most of the game as each team took turns scoring. Lakeville North jumped out in front three different times with Hanson’s goals, but each time Apple Valley answered with a goal of its own. Hanson has 18 goals this season.

It was the junior Weckman though that solidified the win, scoring with just over a minute to play in overtime. Molly Hentges, Avery Ryan and Mazy Ryan scored the three goals for Apple Valley.

Other scores: Lakeville South beat Eastview 2-0; Farmington beat Metro-South 4-2; Rosemount beat Prior Lake 3-0; Shakopee beat Eagan 4-2 Centennial/Spring Lake Park beat White Bear Lake 4-0.

Boys basketball

Park 71, Cretin-Derham Hall 63: Four Wolfpack players scored in double digits to lift Park (4-10) over Cretin-Derham Hall (9-8).

AJ Kennedy led the Wolfpack with 18 points and OT Omet and Henry Schluetter each had 15 points. Park jumped out ahead early, taking a 6-point lead into halftime that it held onto in the second half despite a game-high 21 points from Cretin-Derham Hall’s Jake Little. Luke Jacobson was the second-leading scorer with 11 points.

It’s Park’s second win in a row after losing its previous eight.

Other scores: Mounds View beat Forest Lake 61-54; East Ridge beat Irondale 66-43; White Bear Lake beat Stillwater 67-50; Roseville beat Woodbury 65-46.

Girls basketball

Stillwater 56, White Bear Lake 41: Lexi Karlen scored a game-high 23 points as Stillwater (17-3) topped White Bear Lake (16-4) in a pivotal Suburban East Conference matchup.

The two teams entered the night tied for second place in the conference, both trailing East Ridge by two games — and it was Stillwater that came out hot. The Ponies led 30-19 at halftime as their defense shut down the Bears’ attack. Only three White Bear Lake players scored more than three points. Jordyn Schmittdiel led the bunch with 16 points.

Stillwater also avenged an earlier season loss to White Bear Lake, a 76-69 defeat on Dec. 16. It’s only other conference loss came to East Ridge.

Other scores: Simley beat Central 67-6; Park beat Cretin-Derham Hall 53-35; East Ridge beat Irondale 70-27; Roseville beat Woodbury 58-32; North St. Paul beat Highland Park 79-38.
