Venice pitcher, Jackson Lucas hits a double driving in three runs in the bottom of the first inning against Riverview, Friday evening March 24, 2023, at Venice High School.

VENICE − It was the outburst the Venice High baseball team had been looking for this season.

Sending 16 hitters to the plate in the first inning, Venice scored 12 runs and went on to a 15-4 victory over Riverview High in a Class 7A-District 8 game Friday night.

Averaging 4.2 runs in its first 10 games, Venice’s previous top run output this season was 13 against Cardinal Mooney.

It nearly topped that in the first inning Friday.

Venice collected six hits, took advantage of four walks and a hit batter to score a dozen runs.

Starting pitcher sophomore Jackson Lucas highlighted the uprising with a bases-clearing double.

“I saw a fastball early and kinda decided to turn on it,” Lucas said. “It’s a good way to break out of a slump too, because I wasn’t doing too well.”

Lucas came in batting .219. He doubled his RBI total on the season with one swing of the bat.

“It’s something we’ve been waiting for for a while,” said Lucas, who credited hitting coach Jose Velez for the breakout game offensively.

The left-hander was finished after the first inning in which he pitched a 1-2-3 top of the inning with one strikeout.

“I did. I was feeling great,” Lucas said when asked if he was expecting to go more than an inning. “I’m kinda glad that I didn’t in the sense we scored a lot of runs. It felt great to get in there and have the arm feel good and let the team do some hitting.”

Venice (7-4; 2-1 in 7A-8) added a run in the second and two more in the fourth to post its biggest output since scoring 15 against Hinsdale Central (Illinois) in the IMG Classic on March 26, 2019.

“We’ve looking for any success we can have,” Venice coach Craig Faulkner said. “It’s nice when you swing the bat like that.”

Jon Embury, Trent Adrian, Brady Schumaker all knocked in two runs for Venice, which was bolstered by the return of sophomore infielder David Dubrule, who was playing for the first time this season after being injured in the preseason Green vs. White game.

“He’s going to help us tremendously,” Faulkner said of Dubrule. “I like where we are going. Our hitting is getting better and our pitching is getting stronger.”

Junior side-winding, right-hander Ely Houston came on and pitched 2 ⅓ scoreless innings of one-hit ball with four strikeouts.

“It was nice to see Ely Houston have some success on the mound today,” Faulkner said.

Riverview sophomore Morgan Peggs, making his first varsity start after being called up from the junior varsity, did not have the kind of outing he wanted. Freshman Caiden Cabral came on in the first inning and gave the Rams (4-8) three innings.

“We’re just young trying to gain experience and get our confidence,” said Riverview coach Jeremy Schmidt, who is without his top two pitchers because of injuries. “We’re going to look back at these games at the end of the season and build off it.”

To the Rams credit, they came back with four runs in the second inning after Venice’s big inning. Junior Ayden Shkorupa had a two-run double and sophomore Michael Cantalamessa had a RBI single. Sophomore Andrew Rhymestine drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk.

“We’ve been giving really good at bats,” Schmidt said. “Our hitters are working hard. We’ve been scoring runs. For them to bounce back after that, that’s a positive.”

Riverview (4-7; 1-2 in 7A-8) lost for the fifth straight time.

Venice avenged a 5-4 loss to the Rams earlier this season in Sarasota.

“I’m glad to beat those guys, for sure,” Lucas said. “We’ve been waiting for this since we lost to them in the first game.”

Parrish Community High’s Isabella "Isa" Vega pitches against Lakewood Ranch, Thursday night March 23, 2023, at Lakewood Ranch High.
Parrish Community High’s Isabella "Isa" Vega pitches against Lakewood Ranch, Thursday night March 23, 2023, at Lakewood Ranch High.

Parrish Community 1, Lakewood Ranch 0

LAKEWOOD RANCH − After pitching her first inning, Parrish Community High’s Isabella “Isa” Vega went to the bullpen to work on a particular pitch that was not working in the first inning.

“To have a pitcher say, ‘I need to work on this. I’ll be right back.’ And then have the confidence to throw it, I couldn’t be more proud of her,” Bulls coach Erin Spivey.

Vega put up zeroes throughout in Parrish Community’s 1-0 victory over Lakewood Ranch High on Thursday night at the Mustangs field.

It was Vega’s two-seam fastball that was not performing the way she liked.

In her second victory over the Mustangs this season, the senior right-hander allowed two hits, two walks and hit two batters while blanking Lakewood Ranch for the first time since this date a year ago when Lake Brantley posted an 11-0 victory.

Vega used the same repertoire as she did in the Bulls’ 6-1 victory over the Mustangs on March 7, when she threw a one-hitter (a Cassidy McLellan home run in the sixth inning) with 14 strikeouts and one walk in Parrish.

“About the same,” Vega said. “My riseball was working a lot, and my drop ball was working a lot.”

Vega worked in and out of difficulty most of the evening.

Lakewood Ranch (9-4) had a runner on second with none out in the first inning, a runner on third with two outs in the third inning, a runner on third with no outs in the fourth inning and a runner on third with two outs in the sixth inning.

“That’s our story this year,” Lakewood Ranch assistant coach Paulo Reis said of leaving runners on base. “When you face a girl like Isabella … Hats off to Isabella. She was phenomenal. She’s been phenomenal all these years. We’ve known her for four years. She did everything she had to do and our girls couldn’t make enough adjustments.”

“I would say it’s more difficult because they’ve seen me so many times,” Vega said of the Mustangs.

When Vega was not getting out of the jam with one or more of her 10 strikeouts, the Bulls’ defense was coming up with the big play, much to the delight of their coach.

“It was good for my defense,” Spivey said. “My defense stepped up tonight and handled themselves under pressure which I am super proud about.”

Spivey also was complementary of Vega, who recorded her final four outs via the strikeout.

“It’s real good for her,” Spivey said. “She is good under pressure.”

Parrish Community (11-2) took some of the pressure off Vega and the defense with a run in the first inning.

Leadoff hitter Julia Girk, who went 3-for-3, singled to open the game, was sacrificed to second by Carsyn Kull.

Cleanup hitter Ella Torres dropped a perfectly placed hit on the right-field foul line to produce Girk with the only run of the game and the only run Parrish Community needed on this night.

“It was good. Appreciate scoring early,” Vega said.

Lakewood Ranch hitters swung and missed 20 times.

“We don’t swing and miss. For us to swing 20 times and miss and have 10 strikeouts, it’s tough to win,” Reis said. “Our philosophy today was nothing above the hands. Keep your hands up and you’re looking down and swinging down on the ball. She had a lot of movement today. It’s easier to say than to do and our girls struggled.”

Freshman Olivia Carr allowed five hits and a walk with five strikeouts.

“You could see the bulldog in her,” Reis said of Carr. “She competed the whole time. We didn’t have enough luck.”

Palmetto Tigers' MaKenna Lee at bat against Venice, Wednesday evening March 22, 2023, at Venice High School.

VENICE − The Palmetto High softball team has been aiming to get off to better starts.

MaKenna Lee provided the early cushion and pitcher Desiree Aitken took it from there.

Lee crushed a no-doubt, 3-run home run in the first inning and Aitken pitched a shutout in the Tigers’ 4-0 whitewash of Venice High on Wednesday evening.

“We’ve done that pretty successfully,” Palmetto coach Andrew Emery said. “But not to that level.”

Leadoff hitter Joli McElroy reached on an error to open the game. Riley Anderson followed with a bunt single. Whitney Waldo was credited with a single after her batted ball struck Anderson running to second base.

Lee crushed a 1-2 outside curveball over the center field fence for a 3-run homer.

“It felt great,” Lee said. “Our plan was just to pass the bat and it worked.”

“She’s got the power,” Emery said. “And it’s such a smooth swing. It seems effortless at times. And that’s just an indictment that she has a great swing.”

That was more than Aitken needed on this night. The junior right-hander allowed three hits and struck out 18, including four in one inning, without issuing a walk.

Palmetto Tigers' pitcher Desiree Aitken went seven innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, striking out 18 and walking zero against Venice, Wednesday evening March 22, 2023, at Venice High School.
Palmetto Tigers' pitcher Desiree Aitken went seven innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, striking out 18 and walking zero against Venice, Wednesday evening March 22, 2023, at Venice High School.

Aitken appreciated the early cushion.

“It was great to have the team back me up like that,” she said.

Everything was working for Aitken including her riseball and screwball which she dubbed a “scrise.

“Tonight it really worked well,” Aitken said of what she called her best game of the season.

“She did great, phenomenal,” Lee said. “She was shut down the whole game.”

“She was efficient,” Emery said. “She was hitting her spots. She’s working really hard.”

“You can’t start the game tonight like the way we started the game tonight,” Venice coach Steve Constantino said.

Venice knew what it was facing. Having defeated Palmetto on the road, 4-1, to begin the season, Constantino had his players watch every pitch from the first game when his team touched Aitken for four runs (three earned) in 5.2 innings. Aitken struck out 11 Venice hitters in the first meeting.

“We know she’s got a dirty curveball. It’s filthy, Constantino said. “We knew what we were against.”

It was not the regular lineup Constantino trotted out against Aitken and Palmetto this time.

“We have some internal issues that we have to get straightened out,” he said. “Tonight was a point to the whole team. The kids who were in the lineup tonight were the kids who came here who legitimately and diligently worked on hitting. Some of the kids who weren’t in the lineup weren’t serious as they weren’t serious about going out there and trying to hit it or they obviously couldn’t and admitted it.”

Constantino pointed to sophomore Raionna Smith as one who made adjustments. After striking out three times in the first meeting, Smith had one of Venice’s three hits and stole a base.

“We are not spending enough time seriously doing work at practice. We’re not practicing to get better; we’re just going through the motions,” Constantino said. “Some of it has to do with the youth of our team. So if it means a night like tonight has to happen … It wasn’t about the kids who weren’t in the lineup; it was about the kids who worked their ever-loving, you-know-what off to get in the lineup.”

Emily “EBo” Borresen reached base all three times for Palmetto with two singles, a hit by pitch and a run batted in.

Each team turned in an outstanding defensive play: Venice second baseman Kaylin Smith and Palmetto center fielder Kristen Allison.

Venice (5-2) plays four games in the Doc for Life Tournament in Ocala this weekend.

Palmetto (7-6) is off until Tuesday when it plays host to Riverview.

Lakewood Ranch's Amanda Lee scores to break the 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 12th inning winning 4-3 against the Sarasota Sailors Tuesday night March 21, 2023, at Lakewood Ranch High.

LAKEWOOD RANCH − Amanda Lee jokes that she does not like her dad, Todd, being the head coach of her Lakewood Ranch High softball team.

“But when he’s not here I really miss it,” Amanda Lee said.

With Todd Lee in Sarasota Memorial Hospital after a biking accident, Amanda Lee ended a marathon game by scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Mustangs a 4-3 victory over Sarasota High on Tuesday night.

This one was for dad.

“A little bit in the back of my mind,” Amanda Lee said on thinking of her father when playing Tuesday. “I’m trying not to think about it. Softball is my getaway from everything. Obviously, I wish he was here. I just want to play for him.”

Lee singled to right-center field to open the bottom of the 12th inning, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a sacrifice bunt by Ella Dodge and scored on a wild pitch to end the 3-plus hour contest.

“I knew once I got on we were going to win,” Amanda Lee said. “I trust my team. I saw it and said ‘That’s it, I’m going.’ ”

It was Lakewood Ranch’s eighth straight victory over the Sailors and 17th in the past 18 meetings with Sarasota.

But this one did not come easy.

Down 2-0 the Sailors (6-2) scored two runs in the fifth inning on a single by Addi Schweid to tie it.

After Lakewood Ranch (8-3) regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an error, Sarasota knotted the game again in the seventh. With one out Chrissy Bowser walked, Carley Ramsden reached on a bunt single and leadoff hitter Sommer Speers was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Schwied knocked in her third run with a sacrifice fly that was dropping in center field. Cassidy McLellan recovered and alertly threw out Ramsden attempting to score.

“We stranded some girls on base, and that just can’t happen,” Sarasota coach Heather Mushrush said.

The Sailors left 10 runners on base, nine in scoring position, and had two runners thrown out at the plate.

“It’s small, little execution stuff that we’ve got to tighten up and get down,” Mushrush said. “I’m proud of my girls for not giving up. At the end of the day it’s the little things we’ve got to tweak. It’s just tying all the hits together. That’s kinda been our issue. As soon as it pops, it’s going to hit.”

Lakewood Ranch scored single runs in the first and third innings. McClellan crossed on a wild pitch in the first and doubled home Lee in the third.

Playing their first game since March 9 and not practicing as a team during spring break, the Mustangs had seven hits in 12 innings.

“We need to make adjustments quicker,” Lee said.

“We had our opportunities,” Lakewood Ranch assistant coach Craig Toler said. “The bottom line is their pitcher pitched a great game. She was throwing just as hard at the end as she was at the beginning.”

Sarasota pitcher Ryleigh Bennett went the distance, giving up seven hits in 12 innings with eight strikeouts.

“Ryleigh Bennett I don’t think there’s many people who work harder than she does,” Mushrush said. “She’s in the gym working out at 5 in the morning and is pounding her mound after the game.”

Dodge pitched the first five innings for Lakewood Ranch. Freshman Olivia Carr came on and pitched the final seven innings to get the victory.

“Absolutely, we needed it,” Toler said of his two pitchers. “Ella gave us a real good game. Olivia is a freshman and has ice in her veins.”

The long week continues for both teams. The Mustangs, who are 8-1 at home this season, entertain Gulf Coast on Wednesday and Parrish Community on Thursday.

“We’re just not hitting,” Toler said. “Until we start hitting, this is the way the games are going to be.”

Abbey Johns had three hits, two doubles, and a stolen base for Sarasota, which had a five-game winning streak snapped.

The Sailors visit Braden River on Thursday before playing two games Friday and Saturday in the Palm Harbor Tournament.
