THURSDAY

SOFTBALL

Parrish Community 11, Venice 1

VENICE − Ella Torres does not mind being 1A to No. 1 Isabella “Isa” Vega in the circle for the Parrish Community High softball team.

“We actually work very well together,” Torres said. “Honestly, I don’t feel like I am in competition with her. We work well together. I like having competition. It makes me throw better.”

Torres got her eighth start of the season Thursday evening and did not disappoint. The senior right-hander pitched a two-hitter in the Bulls’ 11-1 victory over host Venice.

Torres raised her record to 6-1 and kept her earned run average around 1, compared to 6-1 with an 0.83 ERA for Vega.

The difference is in the style of pitches. Torres throws more horizontally; Vega more vertical.

“I just try to attack them for strikes always,” Torres said after striking out five and walking two. “I try to work the counts and move horizontally. I try to work with my pitching coach to work on where they are standing in the box and what pitches I need to throw to them there.”

For Parrish Community coach Erin Spivey it is a nice combination.

“They have different pitches, so they complement each other very well,” Spivey said. “They have an incredible bond. I never had two pitchers work more closely together than they do. If one of their pitches isn’t working they go to the other one. They go over the pitching charts together. They over the batting. They talk about games. It’s really incredible to see them root for each other. It’s nice.”

The Bulls (12-2) scored in six of the seven innings, including two in the fifth and sixth and four in the seventh.

Torres, who plays third base when she is not pitching, helped her cause by knocking in three runs with a pair of hits and reaching base in all four trips.

Cleanup hitter Ella Romano had three hits, reached base four times and knocked in a pair of runs. Karsyn France had two hits, including a solo home run after a long foul ball, and reached base three times. No. 2 hitter Jade Kruse had a hit, walked three times and scored two runs.

While making some good defensive plays, Venice (8-5) struggled with its outfield defense, dropping three fly balls. It also had difficulty in the circle as three pitchers combined to walk seven.

“That was supposed to happen. When you play one of the top 10 or 15 teams in the state, they control the game, a team full of kids who are very experienced, D-1 kids,” Venice coach Steve Constantino said. “We just don’t have command of the circle right now.”

Kaylin Smith had the only Venice hit over the first six innings, a clean single to center, before she left the game with an injury on a steal of second base. Zoey Lynn had the other, a solo home run in the seventh inning to center field.

“The score doesn’t bother me,” Constantino said. “We took a step back in the things we are good at all year. We’ve been great defensively all year.”

Venice turned a 4-3 double play with second baseman Izzy Leggett and threw a runner out at the plate from center fielder Myah Purdy to pitcher Layne Preece to catcher Kinley Rutherford.

It was Parrish Community’s first game since the FHSAA power rankings came out that has the Bulls the top-ranked team in Class 5A and sixth overall in the state.

“I told the kids even before the rankings came out we have bullseye’s on our back,” Spivey said. “Being a young program everybody comes after us. No more are we going to be the target; we are going after everybody else. We’re going to change that mentality. We’re comin’.”

The Bulls return to action Friday at Berkeley Prep (10-2) in Tampa. Venice visits Sarasota on Wednesday.

TUESDAY

SOFTBALL

Charlotte 5, Venice 4

VENICE − At the beginning of the season Charlotte High pitcher Dava Hoffer did not have an off-speed pitch in her repertoire.

As the season moved along Tarpons coach Dave Anthony began working with Hoffer on a changeup.

Tuesday night, that pitch became a weapon.

Hoffer mixed the changeup into her arsenal of pitches enough to keep Venice High off balanced at the plate. Charlotte’s offense used the long ball to get enough runs in a 5-4 victory.

“We did not have a changeup at the beginning of the season,” Anthony said. “We literally didn’t have one. This was the number one thing we’ve talked about over and over: We have to have a change of speed pitch in order to get outs.”

At the beginning of the year, Hoffer would get ahead in the count, but at times could not put the hitter away.

“They were putting balls in play. We couldn’t strike people out,” Anthony said. “Tonight we got strikeouts or little, tiny rollers on those changeups. It’s been a huge improvement for her.”

Hoffer, a sophomore, struck out four and scattered eight hits while limiting the damage to single runs in the second, third, sixth and seventh innings.

“Like Coach Dave said, once I use that pitch it’s going to be very deadly for my pitching career,” Hoffer said. “My first changeup I could feel that it was going to be a good pitch this game. And it definitely was. It was definitely my pitch this game.”

“They were working so had to throw them,” Charlotte catcher Faith Wharton said.

Wharton did not just call the game behind the plate. She knocked in three runs with a first-inning groundout and a two-run homer in the third inning, two batters after Amber Chumley hit a solo shot to open the inning.

For Wharton it was her fifth home run of the season, one shy of tying the team single-season record set by Dylan Anthony two years ago.

“Off the bat I knew it was,” Wharton said of her home run to left-center field. “A lot of them I don’t, but that one I did.”

“Faith and Amber, those girls can definitely hit,” Hoffer said. “Very powerful hitters.”

Down 5-1 Venice got solid relief pitching from Bailee Riggins, who allowed three hits and kept the Tarpons (11-3) off the scoreboard the final four innings.

“It started out pretty ugly for us,” Venice coach Steve Constantino said.

Venice (8-4) kept chipping away, receiving a RBI groundout from Zoey Lynn, a run-scoring single from Emily Beam, a run-producing double from Kaylin Smith and a solo home run from No. 9 hitter Kinley Rutherford to lead off the seventh.

With Mia Flores ready to pitch for the Tarpons, Anthony stuck with Hoffer, who got the Venice 1-2-3 hitters in order to finish the game.

“She got herself into a little bit of trouble, dug down and pulled us right out of it with four or five precision pitches,” Anthony said. “I wanted to give her a chance to compete in these big, close games to see what she can do because we are going to have a lot of them coming down the stretch. And she passed the test with flying colors.”

“We had 1-2-3 and couldn’t get anything done,” Constantino said. “Hoffer had us on our heels with that offspeed pitch. It was pretty deadly tonight.”

Constantino second-guessed himself on not starting Riggins.

“I’ll take this one,” he said. “If I started her, it might have been a different story. This one is not on the kids.”

Both Charlotte and Venice went 3-1 in different pools of the Doc 4 Life Tournament last weekend in Ocala.

Both teams are back in action Thursday: Charlotte at Mariner in Cape Coral and Venice home against Parrish Community, the No. 1 team in Class 5A in the state, as per the FHSAA rankings.

MONDAY

BASEBALL

Sarasota 3, Lakewood Ranch 2, 8 inn.

LAKEWOOD RANCH − The Sarasota High baseball team is finding ways to win.

“Hard work and dedication pays off,” Sailors first baseman Tyler Maszuk said.

Maszuk’s two-run single in the top of the eighth inning lifted Sarasota to a 3-2 victory over host Lakewood Ranch in a Class 7A-District 8 game Monday evening.

But it was so much more than that.

Rex Smith scored from first base on Maszuk’s hit down the right field line that was slightly bobbled in the corner. Smith made a nifty slide to get under the tag with what proved to be the winning run after Michael Bendever scored the tying run.

Bendever then replaced Luke Jackson on the mound. With a two-run cushion, Bendever gave up a run, but stranded the tying run at first base by getting a grounder to first to end the game.

In the seven inning prior, Jackson was brilliant.

The right-hander worked through a little early difficulty when a Jack Muller double and two walks loaded the bases. Pitching counterpart Lochlan Radloff got the Mustangs (6-5; 0-1 in 7A-8) on the board with a groundout.

The Sailors (10-2; 3-1 in 7A-8) got the run right back in the top of the second inning. Maszak reached on a wild pitch after a strikeout, went to second on another wild pitch and scored on a single by Rocco Depastino.

It remained 1-all to the eighth inning. Sarasota had three hits in the seventh, but had a runner picked off third to end the threat.

In the eighth, the Sailors capitalized.

Bendever walked and took second on a dropped fly ball in the outfield. Maszak’s double just inside the first base bag scored both with the aggressiveness of third base coach Greg Mulhollen.

“I was just trying to get on base. I was trying to give us a runner and a chance to score,” said Maszak, who hit a tying home run in the sixth inning in Sarasota’s previous win over Lemon Bay High.

“Tyler Maszak clutch right there,” Mulhollen said. “These boys are playing some good ball right now, throwing strikes and timely hitting.”

In his seven-inning outing, Jackson allowed two hits, none after the second inning. He struck out 10 and walked five. Jackson retired the final seven hitters he faced, but was approaching his pitch limit.

“It was awesome. I love watching that,” Maszak said of Jackson’s pitching. “He threw extremely well.”

“Luke Jackson was absolutely fantastic on the mound,” Mulhollen said. “Bendever following him was a good mix, hard stuff and breaking stuff. We’re learning different ways to win ball games.”

Lakewood Ranch coach Colton Chupp is just looking for his team to make the routine plays, especially in the outfield. Had the Mustangs did Monday, the outcome might have been different.

“Routine outs. We’ve got to have those,” Chupp said. “Another tough one. We’ve got to find a way to put the ball in play more with two strikes.

“It was just a tough loss.”

Sarasota returns to action Tuesday against Manatee High at G.T. Bray Park. Lakewood Ranch plays Wednesday at home against IMG Academy White.
