HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Marshfield cross country teams top Hingham to claim division crowns

It's Marshfield, again.

The Rams girls and boys cross country teams each extended their streaks of winning Patriot League Keenan Division crowns by beating Hingham at home on Wednesday.

The Marshfield girls won, 19-39, to claim their third straight crown, while the boys prevailed, 19-44, to capture their second straight title.

Marshfield's Eleanor Angeles-Whitfield won the 2.9-mile girls race in 18:34, while Tyler McCredie won the boys' 2.9-mile race in 16:46.

Hingham's Clare Lowther was runner-up in the girls race in 18:59. Marshfield then took the next four spots with Ava LoVuolo (3rd, 19:37), Ava Brunswick (4th, 19:38), Charlotte Perreault (5th, 19:58) and Grace Ciocca (6th, 20:04). Meredith Miller was eighth in 20:32.

For Hingham, Sarah Burke (20:23) was seventh, and Sydney Driscoll (21:09) was ninth.

Hingham's Brendan Burm was runner-up in the boys race in 16:53. Marshfield took the next six spots with Gabe Zullo (3rd, 17:12), Taite Panton (4th, 17:14), Matt McCabe (5th, 17:31), Mark Poitras (6th, 17:41), Graham Heinrich (7th, 17:48) and Matt Wehr (8th, 17:50). Hingham's Ryan Gates was ninth in 17:53.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Plymouth North 21, Silver Lake 34: Spencer Cook won the 2.8-mile race for the visiting Lakers (2-4). Gavin McCarthy was sixth in 18:12, and Frankie Cuozzo was eighth in 18:16.

Pembroke 19, Quincy/North Quincy 43: Josh Phinney and Adam Wengryn finished 1-2 for the Titans (3-1). David Schmidt was third for Q/NQ (2-2).

Middleboro 17, Rockland 38: Freshman Atley Phinney won his fifth race in a row as the Sachems (5-1) prevailed on the road. Teammate Dante D'Alessandro was runner-up.

Bridgewater-Raynham 15, Durfee 50: James Murray (18:54), Jack Alves (19:42) and Joey Brand (19:54) starred for B-R (3-0).

Oliver Ames 19, Canton 38: On Tuesday, the Tigers clinched a third straight Hockomock League Davenport Division crown as Ryan Sarney, Aidan Dupill and Brendan Thomas finished 1-2-3. Sophomore Brody Lake finished fifth. “Honestly, none of us would be running as well if we didn’t have each other in the races and the workouts," OA junior Brendan Thomas said. "It's a team effort, and we are making each other better every day."

OA will head to Barnstable for the Twilight Invitational on Friday night. The Hockomock League Championship meet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Quincy/North Quincy 20, Pembroke 35: Salma Boukhtam and Aluna Coogan-Coyne finished 1-2 for Q/NQ (3-1). Pembroke's Cassie Sparrow was third.

Plymouth North 21, Silver Lake 34: Erin Flaherty (22:32) and Megan Laliberte (23:01) finished 3-4 for the Lakers (0-6) on North's 2.8-mile course.

Middleboro 24, Rockland 35: Senior Liv Austin won her first varsity race, and Charleigh Butler and Ella Dizel also ran well for the visiting Sachems (5-1).

Newton North 15, Braintree 47: The Wamps dropped a Bay State Conference match on Senior Day.

Oliver Ames 15, Canton 50: On Tuesday, the Tigers clinched a third straight Hockomock League Davenport Division crown as Katie Sobieraj and Jojo Holmes finished 1-2. Both runners were unbeaten in the league during the regular season. “Not only are they two of the best runners in the state," OA coach Kyle Sousa said, "but they are two of the most dependable athletes I know."

OA will head to Barnstable for the Twilight Invitational on Friday night. The Hockomock League Championship meet will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29.

GIRLS SOCCER

Southeastern 6, Tri-County 0: Rhiannon Maloney and Kelsea Doherty each scored twice, and Layza Levy and Agapi Kouvlis added goals for the Hawks. Sophomore goalkeeper Paige Crockett posted her sixth clean sheet of the season. Senior center back Erika Blanchard was strong defensively.

Blue Hills 2, Diman 1: Emily Lehane (Braintree) and Kathleen Murphy scored to lead the Warriors (8-0-2). Alexis D'Arcy had an assist, and midfielders Brielle Doolin (Holbrook) and Kylie Harer (Holbrook) had strong games.

Oliver Ames 6, Milford 2: Taylor Devos scored twice, and Lucinda Li Cotter, Jolie Diaz, Jenna Gilman and Carly Gibson added goals, all in the first half, to lead OA to its 10th straight win.

Franklin 1, Stoughton 0: Lauren Mitchell and Emma Tremblay played well in the back for Stoughton. Goalkeeper Katrina Varnum made 11 saves in the loss.

Thayer Academy 5, Groton 2: The Tigers (6-1) won on the road.

BOYS SOCCER

Oliver Ames 1, Milford 0: In battle of Hockomock League division leaders, the visiting Tigers got a goal from Casey Milliken (No. 13 on the season) and another shutout by Drew Hall (No. 8 on the season) to improve to 10-0-2 overall (10-0-1 in the league). Jake Williams assisted on the goal.

Rockland 0, Attleboro 0: Goalkeeper Nick Ruggeri posted the shutout for the visiting Bulldogs in the non-league tie. Liam Shea, Ashton Cetoute, Chris Hamilton and Matt Devito were defensive standouts.

Archbishop Williams 3, Arlington Catholic 0: Freshmen D.J. Tandy scored twice, and Luca Greco added a goal for the Bishops (8-3). Goalkeeper Nate Morris made four saves for his eighth shutout of the season.

Norwell 3, Cohasset 0: Garret Fisher, Ben Garland and Max Flanders scored for the Clippers.

Groton 6, Thayer Academy 2: The Tigers (3-6) lost at home.

FIELD HOCKEY

Marshfield 6, Whitman-Hanson 0: Erin Boyd scored twice, and Ali Ferris, Mary Tracey, Jayne O’Neill and Maegan Condon added goals for the host Rams (7-4-1, 6-2 Patriot League). W-H was led by Paige Cosgrave, Lillie MacKinnon and Ryan Labonte.

Norwell 2, Middleboro 2: Paige Maguire and Maddie McDonald scored for Norwell in the South Shore League tie.

Hanover 2, Scituate 1: MacKenzie Foley and Ava Toglia scored to lead the Hawks to a road win. Hanover goalkeeper MaryKate Vermette made nine saves. Molly Gould scored for Scituate.

Plymouth North 2, Somerset Berkley 1: Maeve Campbell and Megan Petrarca scored for North.

East Bridgewater 0, Carver 0: Alli Thomas, Ashleigh Johnson, Izzy Mercer and Jenna Newell played well for Carver. Goalkeeper Ali Perry made six saves for the shutout.

Braintree 0, Brookline 0: The visiting Wamps (10-2-1) earned a tie in Bay State Conference action.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Norwell 3, Middleboro 0: E.J. Guarchi had 22 digs and 3 kills and served 18 for 18 as the Clippers (10-2) blanked the Sachems in South Shore League action. Sarah Pegurri, Skylar Page and Izzy Woodman led the front-row attack and defense, finishing with a combined 13 kills and 4 blocks. Hilary Howell (kill, 4 digs, served 14 for 14 with 3 aces) was strong in her first varsity start.

Hanover 3, Pembroke 1: Sarah Long (7 kills), Claire Kenney (5 aces) and Tess Madden (4 kills, 6 aces) led the Hawks to a Patriot League win. Devin Benjamin and Lauren Cusick combined for 20 assists.

Whitman-Hanson 3, Marshfield 1: Senior captain Gracey Gorman had five kills in the first set as the Panthers improved to 9-6 (7-6 in the Patriot League) with a 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-14 win. Setter Caroline Gray and Alyssa Barbato also starred.

Cape Tech 3, South Shore Tech 2: Zoey Bradshaw served 15 for 15 and Mia Bradshaw served 15 for 17, but the Vikings (11-2) lost a five-setter. Kylie Smith went on a 7-point serving run to clinch the third set, and Alli Traynor and Gemma Geisler had 30 digs apiece.

East Bridgewater 3, Abington 2: Paige Pavidis and Mia Brinaccini starred for the Vikings (6-6).

West Bridgewater 3, Westport 2: The Wildcats improved to 12-2 overall, 6-0 in the Mayflower Athletic Conference.

Duxbury 3, Silver Lake 0: The Green Dragons topped the Lakers in Patriot League action.

Rockland 3, Mashpee 0: The Bulldogs posted a South Shore League road win.

Plymouth North 3, Hingham 2: Meghan Koenen had a strong match for Hingham in the 17-25, 25-21, 13-25, 25-21, 15-5 loss.

BOYS GOLF

Abington 146, Cardinal Spellman 66: Hunter Grafton scored 27 points, and Jacob Quinn and Jonathan Halpin each added 25 to lead the Green Wave (10-6) to a win. Evan St. Martin, Cullen Crocker and Zach Buccigross each scored 23 points. Spellman got 19 points each from T.J. Weatherby and Brady Watts.

Norwell 124, Mashpee 79: Senior captain Matt Dassatti shot 2-over-par 37 at Scituate Country Club to lead the Clippers (12-2) to a win in the regular-season finale.

Milford 161, Canton 155: Brendan Tourgee shot 38 for the Bulldogs in the loss. Brian Middleton (39), Charlie Vaughan (41), Matt Yeaton (43), Danny Hall (43) and Joey Ryan (43) also contributed.

Plymouth South 267, Whitman-Hanson 294: Sophomore Cooper Britton tied for low medalist with a 4-over 40 at Atlantic Country Club as W-H completed a 2-14 season. Teammate Derek Olson had his best round of the campaign.

Weymouth sweeps: Anthony Choukas shot 2-under 34 as the Wildcats posted wins over North Quincy, 100-91, and Stoughton, 100-37, in a tri-match. Liam O'Rourke and Joe Malone each shot 39.

Bishop Stang 227, Bridgewater-Raynham 256: Justin Peters (38) and Casey Wensley (41) led B-R (10-4) in the non-league loss at Old Scotland Links. The Trojans will compete in the Southeast Conference tournament on Friday at Fall River Country Club and will play in the MIAA Division 1 South qualifier on Monday, Oct. 17 at Easton Country Club.

Marshfield 242, Pembroke 259: Brendan Abban was low man for Pembroke (6-9) with a 40. Brady McKeown shot 42, with a birdie on 9, and Matt Bergamesca shot 43.
