High school roundup: Moniz helps Sandwich girls lacrosse win division title

Claire Moniz led the offense with five goals for the Sandwich Blue Knights as they beat the Falmouth Clippers 11-6 in girls lacrosse action on Tuesday and clinched the Atlantic Division of the Cape and Islands League title.

Ryann Cobban scored four goals, Riley Morrison had a goal and an assist, Kolbie Darmon added a goal, Sophia Visceglio dished out two assists and Maria Hurley had four saves in net for Sandwich (15-1-1).

GIRLS LACROSSE:

Nauset 8, Martha's Vineyard 7: The Warriors won a close contest over the Vineyarders to improve to 3-11.

Cape Cod Academy 16, Dennis-Yarmouth 9: Ella Bartolomei paced the Seahawks (8-4) offensive with six goals and two assists. Mavis O'Neil also had a strong day for the Seahawks offense scoring five goals herself.

Fairhaven 16, St. John Paul II 10: Hadley Crosby scored five goals and dished out two assists for the Lions in a win over the Blue Devils.

Lucy Barker had three goals and four assists and Maggie Crofford and Katelyn Lawson each finished with a goal for JPII (7-6-0).

Sandwich 11, Falmouth 6: The Blue Knights beat the Clippers to take their record to 15-1.

Nantucket 14, Barnstable 6: The Whalers (11-3) got the victory over the Red Hawks (5-11).

BOYS LACROSSE:

Mashpee 14, Middleboro 9: Owen Balfour led the way on offense with eight goals and two assists for the Falcons in a win over the Sachems.

Jack Howard had five goals and four assists, Ian Cook added a goal and an assist, Jack Stone dished out four assists, and Trey Peters played aggressively with an assist for Mashpee (10-5-0).

On the defensive side, Kayden Eaton had nine saves, Hunter Bohnenberger, Jesse Hickey, Maxx Smith, Dominic Matteodo, and Vinny Pinnetti all played well for the Falcons.

Sandwich 11, Falmouth 4: Avery Richardson scored five assists and dished an assist for the Blue Knights as they beat the Clippers.

Caleb Richardson finished with three goals, Cole Rodgers had a goal and an assist, and Matt DiGiacomo and Anthony Kent each ended with a goal for Sandwich (13-3-0).

Nauset 10, Nantucket, 6: The Warriors got the victory over the Whalers to improve to 15-1.

Bourne 13, Upper Cape 8: The Canalmen got the victory over the Rams to improve to 4-10.

Falmouth Academy 18, Dennis-Yarmouth 9: The Mariners beat the Dolphins to advance to 7-5.

Sturgis East 14, Monomoy 7: The Storm (6-4) doubled up the Sharks to get the win.

SOFTBALL:

Falmouth 5, Pembroke 4: Kaylee Shaw went 2-for-3 with an RBI and had the go-ahead RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning for the Clippers as they beat the Titans.

Phoebe Cutter on the mound pitched a complete game, allowed three hits, struck out 11, and went 2-for-3 behind the plate with a run scored and an RBI. Anna Velesig finished 1-for-3, scored a run, and had a two-RBI double in the first inning for Falmouth (12-5).

Rockland 17, Mashpee 4: Evelyn Provencher finished 1-for-2 with two RBIs for the Falcons, but the Bulldogs got the victory.

Sophia Bergonzi and Michelle Gonsalves each went 1-for-2 and scored a run, Kasey Boettger was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Sam Rozum added an RBI for Mashpee (1-15).

Nauset 23, Nantucket 22: The Warriors won a shootout over the Whalers to make them 6-10.

South Shore Voke 13, Cape Tech 1: Cape Tech took the loss dropping the Crusaders to 6-10.

Bishop Connolly 14, St. John Paul II 2: The Lions lost to Bishop Connolly and they are now 6-10.

GIRLS TENNIS:

Monomoy 5, Nantucket 0: Olivia Prisco and Jade Kennedy won second doubles 6-2, 6-0 for the Sharks as they swept the Whalers.

Tatiana Malone won first singles 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, Lilly Gould won second singles 6-2, 6-2, Jocelyn White won third singles 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, and Angelica Velasquez and Christie Beckley won first doubles 7-5, 7-5 for Monomoy (15-3).

Bourne 3, Apponequet 2: Grace Gobeil and Sydney Fitzpatrick won first doubles 6-0, 6-0 for the Canalmen in a win over the Lakers. Audrey Caron won third doubles 6-1, 6-0, and Zoe Ridl and Mia Madge won second doubles 6-4, 6-2 for Bourne (9-8).

Plymouth North 5, Sandwich 0: The Blue Knights (6-10) were swept by Plymouth North.

St. John Paul II 4, Nauset 1: The Lions won and move to 15-1.

BOYS TENNIS:

Monomoy 5, St John Paul II 0: A clean sweep for the Sharks jumped their record to 15-2 in the season. Ryan Casey, Joe Malone, and Matt Barbella won their respective singles matches for Monomoy, before duos Colin Malone and Charles Watson, and Gavin McDonnell and Maximus Weinberg, won their doubles matches to seal it for the Sharks.

Martha’s Vineyard 5, Barnstable 0; Martha’s Vineyard 4, Barnstable 1: The Vineyarders won the first match with Juniors Jacob Riis, Clyde Smith, and freshman Zak Potter winning in singles, and with doubles victories from Junior Teagan Myers with freshman Caleb Dubin, and freshmen Kert Kleeman and Kyle Levy.

In the second match, Jacob Riis and Zak Potter again won singles matches, while doubles victories were recorded by senior Ben Belisle with junior Jack Marshard, and by freshmen Otis Forrester and Roger Schilling for Martha's Vineyard (15-2).

The lone Barnstable (6-9) win was recorded by Alex Arabadzhiev who defeated Kleeman.

Plymouth North 5, Sandwich 0: Sandwich was swept by Plymouth North to drop to 4-8.

Apponequet 5, Bourne 0: The Canalmen were swept and fell to 7-10.

BASEBALL:  

Abington 5, St John Paul II 4: Despite a strong relief outing from Colin Buckley, pitching 3.1 no-hit innings, and a three-hit day from Jake Walman, the Lions lost a tight one to Abington to drop to 10-10.

Mashpee 3, Cohasset 2: In the continuation of a game that was tied at 2 after nine innings, Mashpee used a leadoff walk and three consecutive singles to grab a walk-off victory.

Wareham 8, Upper Cape 2: The Rams dropped the game against the Vikings to drop to 5-11.

Nantucket 11, Sturgis West 8: The Whalers (4-10) got the win in a high-scoring game against the Navigators (3-8-1).
