HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Pineau's hit puts Abington softball ahead to stay in season opener

Maddie Perry tied the game with a bases-loaded single, and Calli Pineau delivered the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday as the Abington High softball team opened its season with a 4-1 victory over Walpole.

Winning pitcher Shannon Varvitsiotis allowed one earned run and struck out 10 for the Green Wave. Brenna Howley was 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and a run scored. Keira Howley (1-for-3, RBI, run), Elsie Testa (1-for-3, RBI) and Bella Abrams (1-for-3, run) also starred.

SOFTBALL

Archbishop Williams 12, Fontbonne Academy 0 (5 inn.): Jill Ondrick was 4-for-4 with 4 runs and 4 RBI as the Bishops (3-0) won at home. Shelby Parr was 3-for-3 with a run and 3 RBI and pitched all 5 innings, allowing two hits with eight strikeouts. Alyssa Burke (2-for-3, walk, 3 runs) also contributed.

Bridgewater-Raynham 1, Braintree 0 (9 inn.): Lily Welch pitched a nine-inning perfect game with 17 strikeouts as the Trojans won a non-league game at home. Taylor Reid (2 hits) delivered the winning RBI hit. Emma Flaherty also had two hits. Braintree pitcher Ally McNamee had 13 strikeouts.

Brockton 10, North Quincy 4: The Boxers won a non-league game on the road.

Cardinal Spellman 4, Monomoy 0: Taylor Dolan struck out 14 and allowed one infield hit to power the host Cardinals to a win in their opener. Freshman shortstop Avery Barnes had 3 hits and 2 RBI.

East Bridgewater 14, Pembroke 3: Maggie Schlossberg (2 hits, RBI, run) picked up the win in the circle for EB, fanning 13. Sarah Silvia, Emily McNaught, Liz McNaught and Maddie Blette also had multi-hit games.

Franklin 8, Oliver Ames 7: The Tigers banged out 15 hits but lost on the road. Katie Melendy (3-for-5, 3 RBI), Maddie Homer (3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 steals), Devon Morris (3-for-5, RBI), Crystyliah Covel (2 hits, 2 steals) and Katherine Farley (2 hits) all had big games at the plate for OA.

Notre Dame Academy 2, Whitman-Hanson 1: The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and eventually won in extra innings. Haley Leeber put Whitman-Hanson ahead with an RBI bunt single in the sixth. W-H pitcher Lauren Meade allowed 5 hits and struck out 10.

BASEBALL

Bridgewater-Raynham 11, Barnstable 1 (5 inn.): Winning pitcher Luke Barry struck out seven over 4 innings as the Trojans prevailed on the road. Owen King (2-for-3, triple, 4 RBI), Kevin Doyle (2-for-2, triple, RBI) and Casey Wensley (2-for-4, RBI) also starred for B-R.

Whitman-Hanson 9, New Bedford 1: Ryan Baker earned the complete-game win for the host Panthers in their season opener, allowing one earned run with seven strikeouts. Shortstop Brandon Craven had three hits, and Zach Nye had three RBI.

Lincoln Sudbury 11, BC High 6: The Eagles lost at home in their season opener.

Canton 11, North Attleboro 5: Jack Digirolamo was 2-for-5 with 4 RBI as the Bulldogs won at home.

Durfee 3, Middleboro 2: The Sachems lost their home opener.

Franklin 11, Oliver Ames 1: The Tigers lost their season opener at home.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Whitman-Hanson 16, Pembroke 5: Ella Nagle scored 6 goals, and Liv Mara, Maddy Geagon and Shannon Balfe added 2 apiece to power the Panthers. Bailey Kelly and Abby Nash had a goal and an assist apiece, Maddy Allen and Lily O'Donnell also scored, and Andrea Mulligan added a pair of assists. Defenders Jacqueline Bourgelas, Hannah Battell, Caroline Wolford and Ayla Dernier played well in front of goalie Liv Godwin. Deanna Linscott scored twice for the Titans in the loss.

Quincy 11, Archbishop Williams 9: The Presidents (1-1) won a non-league game at home. Avery Valicenti had a hat trick for Archies, and Clare O'Keefe and Caroline Batchelder each scored twice.

Silver Lake 11, Plymouth South 2: Cloe Geraigery had a hat trick, Brielle Cote and Caitlin Dilley each scored twice, and goalie Maggie Keller made 8 saves as the Lakers won on the road.

Notre Dame Academy 16, Duxbury 4: The Cougars won a non-league game at home.

BOYS LACROSSE

Abington 17, Weymouth 12: Hunter Grafton had 8 goals and 4 assists to lead the Green Wave to a non-league road win. Pat Prewitt (3 goals, 2 assists), Jonny Halpin (goal, 5 assists), Jake Spellane (2 goals, assist), Evan St Martin (2 goals, assist) and Ryan Libby (goal, assist) also starred.

Archbishop Williams 9, Quincy/North Quincy 7: Jake CaraDonna had 4 goals and 3 assists as the Bishops won a non-league game at home. Zac McClay (2 goals, 2 assists), Sean Logan (2 goals) and Henri Barriere (first varsity goal) also starred, and Sean Velozo and Jackson McClay each added 2 assists.

Whitman-Hanson 6, Pembroke 4: Goaltender David MacNeil made 13 saves, and Gavin McCarthy scored twice as the Panthers won on the road in Patriot League action. Luke Tropeano, Joe Concannon, Connor McCarthy and Collin Murphy also scored for W-H, and James Whitman, Brendan White and defenseman Will Frazier all had 2 assists. Pembroke got goals from Nate Holmes, Brandon Perry, Jack Conway and Stevie Johnson.

Rockland 6, Braintree 4: Lucas Leander had a hat trick, and goalie Sean Geary had a strong game as the Bulldogs won at home. Gaven Wardwell (2 goals) and Tyler Boehner (goal, assist) also starred. For Braintree, Jack Civottolo scored twice, and Anthony Cappello and Brian Norton added goals.

Hull 8, St. Mary's (Lynn) 6: The Pirates won a non-league game at home.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

North Quincy 3, New Bedford 0: The Raiders (2-0) won at home, 25-17, 25-15, 25-17.

Quincy 3, Durfee 1: The Presidents (2-0) won their home opener.

BC High 3, Winchester 0: The Eagles pulled off the upset, 25-19, 25-15, 25-22.

GIRLS TENNIS

Hingham 5, Notre Dame Academy 0: Mathilde Megard, Katelyn Erickson and Sanya Khadivi won in singles, and Hingham also swept the doubles with the teams of Maggie O’Keeffe/Jill McNamara and Sammy Price/Sam Ruddick.

Whitman-Hanson 4, Abington 1: Freshmen Samantha Jacobsen (7-5, 6-4 at No. 2) and Mari Santalucia (6-2, 6-4 at No. 3) won in singles for the Panthers, who swept the doubles with the teams of Delaney Hughes/Sophie Ennis (6-3, 6-4 at No. 1) and Riley Getchell/Mary Lynam (6-1, 6-1 at No. 2).

Franklin 4, Oliver Ames 1: Hannah Farber won at first singles for OA.

BOYS TENNIS

Oliver Ames 3, Franklin 2: Junior captain Nicholas Westerbebeke won a three-setter, 6-2, 0-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles for OA, which also got singles wins from sophomores Alex Efremidis and Patrick Dolan.
