HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Seven locals battle at Cape & Islands track championships

On Sunday, seven Cape Cod high school indoor track teams (Barnstable, Dennis-Yarmouth, Falmouth, Martha's Vineyard, Nauset, Sandwich and St. John Paul II) traveled to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston to compete in the Cape & Islands League Championship.

The Falmouth boys and Dennis-Yarmouth girls returned home as champions.

For the Falmouth boys' team, Henry Gartner led the way as he won the mile in 4:41.73, and the two-mile in 9:57.19. Jackson Mahoney placed first in the high jump (6-00.00), Brady Garcia won the shot put with a throw of 40-09.50, and the 4x200 relay placed first in 1:44.17.

For the Sandwich boys' team, David Yox tied for first in the 55m in 7 seconds, and won the long jump (19-06.25).

Aidan Brown tied for first in the 55m in 7 seconds, and finished first in the 55m hurdles in 8.54 for the Nauset boys. Damian Bebber won the 300m (37.42), and the 600m (1:30.49).

Daniel Da Silva placed first in the 1000m in 2:36.31 for the Martha's Vineyard boys, and the 4x800m relay team won in 9:10.63.

For Barnstable boys, the 4x400m relay team of Jaxson Merrill, Casey Holland, Eamon Welch-Viens and Denrick Francis won in 3:44.13 and qualified for the state meet.

For the winning D-Y girls, Breanna Braham won the 55m in 7.56, and the 300m in 42.67. Rose Karow placed first in the 600m in 1:44.78, and the 4x200 relay team finished first.

For the Nauset girls, Madeline Mahoney finished first in the 1000m in 3:01.51, Sara Cornell placed first in the 55m hurdles in 9.56, and Caecilia LaBarge won the shot put (31-08.50).

Lilly DeDecko was a double winner, taking the win in the mile in 5:18.19 and the two-mile in 11:39.73 for the Barnstable girls. The 4x800m relay team of Callie DeDecko, Molly Britton, Emma Steenstra and Chloe Dibb placed first in 10:43.75.

Megan Chaney won the long jump (16-06.00) for Sandwich, and the 4x400m relay team placed first in 4:30.52.

Camille Brand won the high jump (5-00.00) for Martha's Vineyard.

Girls basketball

Cape Tech 38, Atlantis Charter 11: The Crusaders (8-5) clinched a playoff spot for the first time in 12 years with three games to go. Lashae Miranda led the way with 12 points. Cape Tech led 20-4 at halftime with good team defense behind the play of Sarah Bent, Maddie Saben-Hambleton and Jada Miranda. Christina Okuniewicz and Gianna Lubash played well on the boards.

"The coaches are proud of all of the girls and can't wait to see the rest of the season out," said head coach Nicholas Conti.

Dennis-Yarmouth 47, Martha’s Vineyard 24: Savannah Azoff led the way for the Dolphins' third straight win with 18 points. Grace Presswood and Siena Lauze each scored 8 points, and Maeve Dolan contributed 5 points for D-Y (10-3).

Upper Cape 49, Bristol Plymouth 26: The Rams (9-7) get their first win of the month.

Boys basketball

Martha’s Vineyard 60, Dennis-Yarmouth 42: Matheus Rodrigues had a double-double of 21 points and 15 rebounds for the Vineyarders as they won their 11th straight game. Ryan Koster added 15 points and 6 rebounds, Josh Lake also notched a double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds), and Nate Story chipped in 9 points for Martha's Vineyard (15-1).

Connor Busiak had 13 points, and Darius Azor contributed 11 points for D-Y (4-11).

Bristol Plymouth 66, Upper Cape 57 (OT): The Rams (9-7) came up short in extra time and snapped a two-game win streak.

Mashpee 58, Sturgis East 21: Dantae Clarke led the way with 11 points for the Falcons in the win over the Storm (1-12). Otis Longman had 10 points, and Sean Fancher and Ryan Arouja each finished with 6 points for Mashpee (5-11).

Cape Tech 70, Falmouth Academy 39: The Crusaders picked up their third straight win behind a season-high of 33 points from Trevor Royne. Brady Grogan added 14 points for Cape Tech (12-4). Nate Holmes led with 22 points for Falmouth Academy (7-5).
