HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Three Sandwich wrestlers qualify for state finals

Over the weekend, the Sandwich High wrestling team competed at the Division 3 South Sectionals with a trio of Blue Knights qualifying for the Div. 3 State Championships.

Senior Avery DeOrsey,  Gavon Potter, and Luke Steele each reached the finals of their respective weight classes, punching their tickets to the State Finals.

DeOrsey was the top seed in the 120-pound weight class and lived up to the seed by claiming the sectional championship by a 6-2 decision. Potter competed in the 113-pound class and secured a second-place finish after being defeated in the finals. Lastly, Steele advanced to the finals after turning around a 10-8 deficit into an 11-10 win in the final seconds. His second-place finish also qualified him for the state finals.

Also competing at South Sectionals this past weekend, was Nauset junior Peter Silvernail. Silvernail finished in fourth place and qualified for States.

Gymnastics

Falmouth/Mashpee/Barnstable competed over the weekend, finishing third overall in a league meet with a score of 141.05. Mashpee senior Ava Kelley finished second all-around with a 36.5, and was awarded Senior Gymnast of the Year. She finished with the highest all-around average in the Cranberry League this season. Mashpee junior Shayne Fraser finished first on the beam (9.1), senior Ava DeSimone took third on vault (9.15), and Barnstable junior Alexa McKeen tied for third on beam (8.8). Barnstable senior Jackie Mahassel finished with the fourth highest all-around average in the league, and seventh all-around at the meet. Head Coach Shailey Pires was also awarded Cranberry League Coach of the Year.

Swimming

The Martha's Vineyard boys team sent five representatives to the MIAA South Sectional Championships over the weekend. Christian Flanders, Nathan Cuthbert, Emmett Silva, Kaua DeAsssi, and Andy Carr all competed for the Vineyarders across a few events. The quartet of DeAsssi, Cuthbert, Flanders, and Silva set a new school record in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:36.18), good for 13th place. The quartet swapped Flanders and Carr for the 400 yard freestyle relay, and finished 18th (3:43.61). Also competing for the Vineyarders was Olympia Hall, who finished 22nd in the 50 yard freestyle (27.49), and 100 yard freestyle (59.66).

Girls Hockey

After the Sandwich boys hockey team claimed the Cape and Island League Atlantic Division Title on Saturday, the girls team matched the feat on Sunday. The Blue Knights beat Falmouth, 5-0, on Sunday to improve to 12-5-1, and secure the league title.

Adrianna Kelsch had two goals and an assist to finish with a team-high three points. Darby Rounseville and Katie Barrett each had a goal and an assist, and Casey Pestilli added the fifth goal on the night. Sophia Visceglio made 21 saves in the shutout.

Girls Basketball

Cape Tech 40, Falmouth Academy 31: The Crusaders are now 9-7 after topping the Mariners (7-8). Jada Miranda had 16 points to lead all scorers, and Lashae Miranda had a double-double in the win (12 points and 11 rebounds).

St. John Paul II 44, Upper Cape 36: The Lions improve to 11-3 on the season after beating the Rams (11-9).

Abington 60, Martha's Vineyard 41: The Vineyarders fall to 6-12 this season.

Sandwich 37, Dennis-Yarmouth 31: The Blue Knights beat the Dolphins to improve to 13-4. D-Y drops to 11-5.

Boys Basketball

Dennis-Yarmouth 71, Sandwich 69: A late floater from Julian Cash with under five seconds remaining gave the Dolphins (6-12) the dramatic win over the Blue Knights (1-15).

Martha's Vineyard 68, Abington 53: Behind Tobey Roberts' 18 points, the Vineyarders improved to 17-1. Matheus Rodrigues had 14 points to go along with 12 boards, while Josh Lake (15 points, 8 rebounds) and Cam Napior (11 points, 5 steals) also had high impact games for Martha's Vineyard.

Girls Hockey

Cape Cod Furies 6, ORR/BMW 1: The Furies (10-7-1) had five different skaters find the back of the net in the win over the Old Rochester Co-op (7-11-1). Morgan Willis was the lone member of the Furies to score twice. The other goal scorers were Sienna Reeves, Julia Kipperman, Emily Underhill, and Gabby Basset.

Boys Hockey

Nauset 4, Nantucket 1: The Warriors (12-5) took the victory over Nantucket (11-5). Dan Deering and Logan Valine each had a goal and an assist, Logan Poulin had two assists, and Sam Weiner and Cam Connery each found the back of the net in the win. Nantucket's lone goal was scored by Colby O'Keefe and assisted by Canton Jenkinson.

Scituate 3, Barnstable 2: The Red Hawks drop to 7-9-1.
