HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Whitman-Hanson volleyball starts fall tournament with win

The MIAA high school tournament kicked off on Wednesday with preliminary-round volleyball action.

The No. 29 Whitman-Hanson girls volleyball team defeated No. 36 Grafton, 3-1 (25-14, 23-25, 25-16, 25-19) in Div. 2 action. The Panthers (11-10) advance to play at No. 4 Dartmouth (17-3) on Friday at 5 p.m. in the first round.

Senior captain Caitlin Leahy led the way with 10 kills while fellow captain Gracey Gorman tallied nine. Caroline Gray, a sophomore setter, had 24 assists and Bailey Kelly finished with three blocks.

The win is believed to be W-H volleyball's first state tournament victory.

VOLLEYBALL

Stoughton 3, Holyoke 1: The No. 27 Black Knights will play at No. 6 Melrose on Friday at 6:30 p.m. in a Div. 2 first-round game.

Westfield 3, Scituate 0: The No. 33 Sailors (10-11) lost in the preliminary round of Div. 2.

Notre Dame Academy 3, Ludlow 1: The No. 31 Cougars (9-12) advance to play at No. 2 King Philip on Friday at 5 p.m. in the first round of Div. 2.

Holbrook 3, Springfield International 0: The No. 34 Bulldogs will play at No. 2 Hopedale in the Div. 5 first round on Friday at 6 p.m.

Pembroke 3, Saint Paul 0: The No. 27 Titans (5-16) earned the sweep (25-14, 25-15, 25-15) to advance in the Div. 3 tournament. Pembroke will play at No. 6 Ashland for a first-round game on Friday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Norfolk Aggie 3, Blue Hills 2 (OT): The Warriors (13-1-4) lost their first game of the season, falling to Norfolk Aggie in the MVADA Tournament final. Sophomore Kathleen Murphy and senior Emily Lehane scored for Blue Hills in the loss.
