HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Whitman-Hanson wrestling wins Weymouth Tournament

The Whitman-Hanson High wrestling team ended an 11-year title drought Saturday by winning the Weymouth Tournament. The Panthers scored 165 points to beat defending Division 1 state finalist New Bedford, which was runner-up, and defending Division 3 state champ Norton, which finished third.

Freshman Charlie Lussier won the 106-pound individual crown, going 4-0 on the day –with three pins – to improve to 20-0 on the season.

Junior Braden Kain was the 138-pound champ, going 3-0 with a pin. He's 16-4 on the season.

Freshman Cooper Lussier won the 152-pound bracket, going 4-0 to improve to 19-2 on the season.

Junior Aiden Guiliani was runner-up at 132 pounds, notching three wins for a 13-2 season record.

Seniors Joe Boss (113) and Pat Collett (145) each finished fourth. Sophomore Cohen Rosado (195) and senior captain Rocco Ruffini (220) each finished sixth, and junior Maddox Colclough (285) went 3-1 with three pins and secured the team championship.

Elsewhere in wrestling:

Oliver Ames sweeps: The Tigers (16-2) went 4-0, beating Walpole (66-18), Norwood (56-21), Excel Academy (73-6) and Milton (47-33). Elyor Ruzmatov (113), Victor Romeiro (120), Nathan Lipski (132), D.J. Lipski (160) and Jaden Hinton (heavyweight) each won all four of their matches.

Hingham sweeps: The Harbormen posted wins over Rockland (30-6), Carver (54-15) and Foxboro (42-33).

BOYS HOCKEY

Hingham 5, Braintree 4 (OT): Bobby Falvey scored with 16.6 seconds to go in overtime as the Harbormen (7-3) edged the Wamps (5-2-1) to give coach Tony Messina his 200th career win. Falvey and Sean Garrity each had two goals, and Aidan Brazel also scored for Hingham. Braintree's Jack Woods forced OT by scoring with 6:29 left in the third period. The Wamps, who fell behind 1-0, 2-1 and 4-2, also got goals from Tim McLaughlin, Nicholas Fasano and Kyle Hutchison.

Pembroke 7, North Quincy 2: Senior defenseman Victor Kosztyla had two assists for his first varsity points, and senior center Jaden Curtis notched his first varsity goal for the Titans (4-5). Anthony Birolini had a goal and two assists, and Cody Cantino, Kevin Picariello, Kyle Picariello and Brandon Perry had a goal and an assist each. Stevie Locke had the other Pembroke goal, and goaltender James Stone made 34 saves.

Scituate 3, Quincy 1: Johnny Donahue notched his first varsity goal, and Teagan Pratt and Brendan Boyle also scored as the Sailors (6-3) beat the Presidents (5-4-1) for the second straight day. Goaltender Cole Coyne came within a few seconds of recording his second shutout in a row.

Plymouth North 6, Whitman Hanson 5: Kevin Norwood had two goals and two assists as the Blue Eagles (5-2-1) beat the Panthers in Patriot League action. Logan Greeley scored his first varsity goal, and Carter Mento had three assists. Whitman-Hanson (4-4) tried to rally in the third as consecutive goals from Matt Solari, Luke Tropeano and Sean Doucette nearly erased a 6-2 deficit.

Marshfield 5, Hanover 0: Colin Doyle, Will Arnone and Jack Croft scored second-period goals as the Rams (5-3-1) broke open a 1-0 game. Nick Souretis and Steve Faria also found the net, and goaltender Brady Quackenbush posted the shutout.

Milton 4, Newburyport 3 (OT): Jimmy Fallon scored the winner for the Wildcats (5-4), who also got goals from Liam Faherty, Kevin McManus and Eoin Faherty. Owen Radley had two assists, and goalie Ryan Dexter made 39 saves.

Middleboro 3, West/East Bridgewater 2: The Sachems evened their record at 4-4 with the win at Bridgewater Ice Arena.

Duxbury 4, Plymouth South 1: Connor O’Connell, Mike Hussey, Wyatt Glass and Tyler Walser scored for the Green Dragons (5-2-2).

Cardinal Spellman 8, St. Joseph Prep 2: The Cardinals (1-6) posted their first win of the season.

Pope Francis 4, Bridgewater-Raynham 1: The Trojans dropped to 3-7-1.

Archbishop Williams 6, King Philip 2: The Bishops improved to 4-3-1.

South Shore Tech 6, Tri-County 0: The Vikings improved to 5-2.

Thayer Academy 6, Noble and Greenough 3: The Tigers won an ISL game.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Marshfield 3, Hanover 2: Junior Amanda Leone punched in a rebound at 8:10 of the third period to snap a 2-2 tie and lift the Rams (2-4, 2-2) to a come-from-behind Patriot League win over the Hawks (3-3-1). Hanover jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Caitlin Fortuna and Eva Kelliher, but Marshfield knotted it up on goals from Maija Kastrud and Max Keeler. Freshman goaltender Ava Peterson stopped 14 shots for her first varsity win.

West/East Bridgewater 5, Nantucket 3: Riley Bain scored twice, and Brooke Lydon, Meaghan Powers and Kate Carabin added goals as the Wild Vikings improved to 4-7. Fallon Smith also starred for WEB.

NDA 2, Natick 1: Avery Engel tied it up in the third period, and Jules Connors won it as the Cougars (3-0-2) rallied past Natick (4-3-1).

Duxbury 3, Plymouth North/South 1: Ayla Abban scored twice, and Reese Porter added a goal for the Dragons (8-0-2).

Braintree 2, King Philip 1: Molly Whitham and Jordyn Bello scored, and goaltender Eva Surrette earned the win for the Wamps (6-2-1).

Quincy/North Quincy 10, Whitman-Hanson/Silver Lake 5: Maddie Bailey scored four goals, and Maggie Lynch and Orla O’Driscoll added hat tricks as Q/NQ (4-3) won a wild game against W-H/SL (4-4).

Pembroke 4, Hingham 2: Eighth-grader Mary Quatrale scored two goals, including the clincher with 3:41 remaining, as the Titans (3-4) topped the Harborwomen (4-4).

Canton 2, Westwood 1: The Bulldogs (5-4) have won four of their last five.

Scituate 5, Malden Catholic 4 (OT): The Sailors (2-8) won their first-round game at the Martha's Vineyard Tournament.

Austin Prep 11, Archbishop Williams 1: Karaline O’Toole scored the lone goal for the Bishops (6-2-1) in a loss to Prep (10-0).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Austin Prep 52, Fontbonne Academy 43: In the loss, Colleen Fogarty scored 16 points for the Ducks, who also got strong games from Alix Abelard (8 points, 6 rebounds), Lilly Blow (7 points, 5 rebounds) and Tressa Murphy (6 points, 9 rebounds).

Thayer Academy 57, Governor's Academy 38: The Tigers (6-2) won a road game.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Governor's Academy 74, Thayer Academy 47: The Tigers lost at home.

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

Bridgewater-Raynham/West Bridgewater 141.35, Falmouth/Mashpee 128.45: Junior Katie Russo had the top scores on vault (9.2) and floor (9.5) and tied with sophomore Brianna Buckley for the top score on bars (8.6) for B-R/WB. Senior Kerryn Olson scored a personal best and the second-highest bar score with an 8.5. Freshman Cecilia Meoli had the top beam score (personal-best 9.3), and junior Mia Balsamo had the second-highest floor score (personal-best 9.25).
