High School Soccer: Lake View girls squad looks ahead to area round

The Lake View girls varsity soccer team started the Class 4A playoffs with a convincing 6-0 victory against El Paso Irvin.

The Maidens traveled to a neutral field in Andrews to face off against Irvin in the bi-district round and with the win improved their record to 17-3-3. The Maidens have not lost since Feb. 14.

“(Bi-district champions) is very deserving for these ladies,” Lake View coach Henry Gonzalez said. "It’s been a great season and we’re so happy where we’re at.”

Lake View scored quickly against Irvin taking a 4-0 lead going into the half with scores from Janessa Rocha off an assist from Isabel Cabrera, two goals from Alyssa DeLaCruz both coming off assists from Jazmyne Flores and then Flores scoring one of her own with the help of an assist from DeLaCruz.

“I told them going into the second half, to treat this like a 0-0 game,” Gonzalez said. “We don’t know what kind of adjustments they were gonna bring at us. We didn’t know what adjustments they were gonna make. I always remind them that we need to play our game, and then that means that we’re gonna put a couple more points on, so be it, because I want them to play at the highest level.”

The Maidens added to their lead with a score off a free kick by Flores and another score from a penalty kick by Faith Miller to bring the final score to 6-0. The Maidens advance to the next round to face off against Canyon Randall with a time and date still to be determined. Lake View and Randall met earlier in the season during a tournament in a game that ended in a 0-0 shootout victory for the Maidens.

“We also understand that (Randall) is a different team now,” Gonzalez said. “I mean, that was about 16 games ago for both of us. They’re better and you know, we’re just as prepared as they are so we’re excited for the rematch.”

Boys team falls to El Paso Riverside 4-2

While the girl’s team advanced to the next round of the playoffs, the Lake View boys' undefeated season came to an end after a 4-2 loss at El Paso Riverside.

“We take a lot of the positives (from this year),” Lake View boys soccer coach Kyle Jones said. “I know we’re losing five seniors, but at the end of the day we got 18 players coming back and those guys got a good taste of what it’s like to be successful. So, I think we have a bright future ahead of us next year.”

The boys ended the season 20-1-1 with their tie coming on Jan 3. The team swept through District 2-4A with a 12-0 record, scoring 109 goals and only allowing 20 on the season.

“Well, I’m hoping we pick up (next season) right where we left off (this season),” Jones said. “Like I said, a lot of the younger guys got a lot of playing time … So hopefully they just pick it up, carry off and we start next season.”
