High School Softball: Area athletes named to Hooks Preseason All-Star Team
The Hooks announced on Thursday that 30 high school softball players were named to the 2023 Hooks South Texas Preseason All-Star Team.
The players represent 18 schools across the Coastal Bend region, and will be honored at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26 at the Omni Hotel in downtown Corpus Christi.
San Diego and Santa Gertrudis Academy led the way with each having three representatives in the Small School/Private School Division, comprised of athletes in Class A through Class 3A, followed by athletes from Odem, Refugio, Aransas Pass, Falfurrias, IWA, London and Riviera.
The Class 4A-5A division was balanced with six schools — Alice, Bishop, Calallen, Carroll, Flour Bluff and Tuloso-Midway — each earning two placements.
Veterans Memorial, Sinton and Ray rounded out the rest of the large-school contingent with one player each.
The 30 softball standouts were selected by head coaches from 31 Corpus Christi-area high schools.
The event will also include John Paul II graduate Jose Trevino, a catcher for the New York Yankees and 2022 American League All-Star, who will be the featured speaker for the 17th South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet.
Ray graduate Nick Loftin, who is in the Kansas City Royals system, will be recognized as the Mike Adams South Texas Pro Player of the Year.
The Hooks will also honor pitcher Jose Bravo and outfielder Justin Dirden with player of the year honors, followed by Refugio native Dan Firova, who will be receiving a lifetime achievement award.
