High school sports are back and we've got a plan to keep Newport County covered

For high school student-athletes in Newport County, the days of hanging out poolside or at the beach are over. It’s mid-August, and that means practices for fall sports have commenced.

The Daily News is ready to bring all of the action to you through our robust coverage of Rogers, Middletown, Portsmouth and Tiverton. We’ll be on the sidelines to make sure we get the inside stories happening on the local fields, courts and courses.

Because it’s what readers want most, a decent chunk of the coverage will center on football. Before the first snap, you’ll be able to find out who are the players to watch for, those ready to break out and which teams are poised to make a championship run.

Then during the season we’ll offer weekly previews to get you ready for the game and break down what happened on Friday and Saturday with in-depth analysis.

But our ink won’t just be spent on the gridiron as we’ll have preseason coverage of other sports. And we know when there’s a big game coming up, so if we see it on the schedule, we’ll be there. In between, we’ll be seeking out feature and enterprise stories to write on athletes and teams from all sports.

To ensure your team gets the coverage it deserves, we’ll need some help. We’re asking that coaches (or even parents or student-athletes) send sporting results via email to sports@newportri.com. Included should be the final score of the game or meet, the opponent, where the game was played and one or two players who stood out and their accomplishments.

Here’s an example: “Ben Atkins scored three goals and Chase Peterson added two goals and an assist to lead the Local High boys soccer team to a 5-1 triumph over Upstate on the road Friday.” It’s that simple.

During the week, we’ll compile all of these results into a running Stars of the Day story online and, using that story, we’ll choose the best of the best performances for our Athlete of the Week feature, the winner of which is voted on by readers.

It should be noted that much of our unparalleled coverage will be available only to subscribers. But there’s good news on that front. You can take advantage of our standard offer, which is a six-month digital subscription for just $1. That’ll get you through high school football season and well into basketball and hockey season.

Throughout the season you'll also find special deals being offered at various times. Regardless of which offer you use, the benefits of subscribing go beyond sports coverage. Being a digital subscriber gives you full access to all online content, plus the e-Edition, and electronic version of the newspaper. You can download the pages as PDFs and print them out, so even though you’re not getting the hard copy of the newspaper, you can still start that scrapbook. The e-Edition access also goes beyond The Daily News, with the ability to read the daily paper from more than 200 partners within the USA Today network.

For those who don’t subscribe, you’ll simply be out of luck. Newport area bloggers have never gone to your games, and they won’t start this season. Those free newspapers might offer coverage of one game, delivered almost a week late.

We’ll stay on top of the action, bringing you everything you need to know — from the first snap to the final whistle.
