High school sports: Forest and West Port win boys volleyball district championships

Forest and West Port claimed boys volleyball district championships on Wednesday night.

The host and top-seeded Wildcats defeated Dunnellon 25-10, 25-10, 25-16 to capture the District 2-1A title, while the No. 1 seeded Wolf Pack defeated North Marion 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 at Vanguard.

Forest improved to 14-2 and West Port 10-4, while DHS dropped to 5-9 and NMHS to 10-4.

The FHSAA will post brackets this weekend, and the regional quarterfinals are scheduled for May 3 at 7 p.m.

Track & field

Trinity Catholic hosted the District 6-1A meet on Wednesday. The only local individual winner was Trinity’s Joshua Jenkins, who won the boys 200 (23.99) and 400 (55.34). The Celtics’ Cedric McFadden finished second in the boys 1,600 (4:46.66) and long jump (19-08.00), while teammate Sophia Bonerclark (1:04.37) was second in the girls 400, fellow Celtic Zoe Zinnie (4-06.00) placed second in the girls high jump and Trinity’s Skyler Moore (99-01-00) finished second in the javelin. St. John’s Jeinaleisse Alicea (13.61) was the runner-up in the girls 100.

Softball

Trinity Catholic 14. Buchholz 0: At Trinity, one outing after throwing her second straight no-hitter, Emma Wyman followed that up with a 1-hitter and 12 Ks in the final regular-season home game for her and her fellow seniors. Kaylee Oliver provided a big offensive punch with a grand slam.

The Celtics (12-12) have won four straight, allowing one run total in those contests, and will visit Sanford Seminole on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

The Villages 14, Lake Weir 0: At The Villages, the Hurricanes (2-22) will face St. Augustine Tocoi Creek at 7 p.m. Monday in the District 4-4A tournament.

Baseball

Dunnellon 11, Newberry 2: At NHS, the Tigers were led by Caleb Beville (3-for-5, 4 RBI, 3 runs, 2 2Bs), Blaise Hawkins (3-for-5, 3 runs, SB), Talan Watson (3-for-5, 4 RBI, 3B) and Mark Pastorella (6 IP with 2 ER allowed and 8 Ks). DHS (15-8) will host Williston on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Leesburg 8, Lake Weir 7: At LHS, the Yellow Jackets scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Hurricanes were led by Tristan Blizzard (3-for-3, run), Justin Byrd (1-for-2, 2 runs, RBI), Tanner Gronlund (1-for-3, 2 RBI, run, 2B), Austin Dodd (1-for-3, 2 runs) and Christopher Adleburg (1-for-3). LWHS (8-17) will face North Marion on Monday at a time TBD in the District 4-4A tournament,

Inverness Citrus 6, Vanguard 5: At CHS, the hosts scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind. VHS (9-13-1) was paced by Luke Oxendine (2-for-2, RBI, 2B, 6 IP with 2 ER allowed and 4 Ks), Cooper Wilson (2-for-3, run), Colin McLaughlin (1-for-2, RBI), Clayton Antonucci (1-for-3, run) and Robert Gottuso (1-for-3, run). The Knights (9-13-1) will host Williston on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Trinity Catholic 11, Williston 3: At Trinity, the Celtics (15-8) were to visit Belleview on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
