Ten schools across Escambia, Santa Rosa and Okaloosa County gathered on Saturday afternoon at the University of West Florida Aquatic Center for the annual Pace Patriot Invitational.

Schools were split into two separate meets as boys and girls scores were merged to determine a winner.

From the shallow end of the pool, Booker T. Washington, Crestview, Gulf Breeze, Milton and Pensacola faced off while Navarre, Niceville, Pace, Pensacola Catholic and Tate competed on the deep end.

Volleyball

Gulf Breeze 3, Navarre 0

Navarre's packed gym and loud home crowd was not enough to distract Gulf Breeze, the area's best team so far in 2022.

Winning their third game in three days, the Dolphins beat the Raiders in straight sets in a District 1-6A matchup on Tuesday.

Both teams came in hot, each losing only three games and reaching double digits in the column wins so far this season. Navarre was 2-0 in district play heading into this matchup, but the team knows in order to reach its ultimate goals, it first needs to get over the hump that is Gulf Breeze.

Gulf Breeze High's Bella Satterwhite (No. 15) goes for the spike against Navarre High during Thursday's District 1-6A volleyball match.

If Thursday is any indication, that may be a very tall task.

The Dolphins showed early signs of fatigue in the opening set, but battled through it like true champions often do. Navarre enjoyed a 23-19 lead, but the visitors roared back with six straight points to not only take the set 25-23, but also take the life out of the gym.

Gulf Breeze captured the final two sets 25-16 and 25-15 to earn its eighth consecutive victory.

"We are on the road, district match, third game of the week with back-to-back-to-back games and this being one of our biggest rivals," Dolphins head coach Jasmine King said. "There were so many factors, and mentally, this is a hard environment.

"After we were able to come back and take a deep breath, we were able to obviously play Gulf Breeze volleyball."

Camryn Brooks led the way for the Dolphins as she typically does, posting a team-best 13 kills. Throughout the night, the senior outside hitter delivered a number of massive kill shots that deflated the air out of the volleyball. That's just one element of Brooks' versatile repertoire, as she also added eight digs, a block and an ace.

"It honestly felt really good (to win) because Navarre and Gulf Breeze are rivals. We had a lot of beef going in," Brooks said with a smile. "We wanted to play (well) and dominate.

Brooks wasn't the only one smiling about her performance either. King talked about what it is to coach such a talented player.

"She is literally like my daughter, little sister. But she is just like a freak athlete and you can't coach the athleticism that Camryn has," King stated. "She is just raw and leads in so many different ways. I hate that she is a senior and is going to play big girl volleyball next year."

King also mentioned how great it has been to have Brooks be a part of the Gulf Breeze program. The pair have combined for over 50 wins together as a player-coach duo, including a 13-3 record so far this year.

Elsewhere, sophomore outside hitter Bella Satterwhite and senior Alana Kolb chipped in 10 and nine kills, respectively. Junior setter Riley Bloomberg paced the road team with 15 assists. Sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Frazee added a Dolphins-best 10 digs.

For Navarre, senior outside hitter Kyra McKelvey had a team-best 13 kills. However, no other player for the hosts had more than three. Junior setter Julia Irmen put up a match-high 20 assists.

The Raiders dropped to 2-1 in district play and 10-4 overall. The team and its head coach aren't too down on themselves after this loss.

"I thought we did play well that first set," Navarre head coach Ryan Davenport said. "And quite honestly, I thought Gulf Breeze started off a little bit slower. So I don't know if our intensity dropped, but Gulf Breeze started fine tuning what they have and it made it difficult for us."

He also spoke about the message he told his players in between sets after they let the lead slip away in the first set.

"There's no lead in volleyball that is a comfortable lead. We got too comfortable with a 23-19 lead and lost 25-23. I told them we got to play every point like its a championship point and if you don't do that against a team like this then you are going to come up short."

The Navarre High front line comes up short and gives Gulf Breeze a point during the open game of the District 1-6A match.

Thursday's match may serve as a good lesson for the Raiders. They faced a tough mid-season test and failed it. The Raiders have time to regroup before the two teams meet in their regular-season final on Oct. 13 on Gulf Breeze.

Gulf Breeze High's Bella Satterwhite (No. 15) digs serve during Wednesday's match against Sneads High. Gulf Breeze defeated Sneads in three straight.

Over the past two weeks, a pair of 2021 state-championship volleyball teams have walked into Gulf Breeze High School to face possibly the area’s best. And when those matches ended, each of those programs walked away empty-handed.

The latest example of this occurred Tuesday when Gulf Breeze nailed down a five-set comeback victory over Mosley, last year’s Class 5A state champions. The visitors took two of the first three sets before the home Dolphins captured the final two sets to pick up the win.

The set scores were 25-18, 14-25, 23-25, 25-21 and 15-7.

“It was some really, really incredible volleyball,” Gulf Breeze head coach Jasmine King said. “I kept trying to remind (my players) just to focus on the things that we can control, don’t try to think so much about the win, instead think about the little things, and then the win will come. It was nice when we really dialed in those last two sets.”

Player stats were unavailable.

On Aug. 31, Gulf Breeze earned a three-set victory over the defending 1A Sneads. Then, facing premier teams from the Southeast later that week, the team went 4-3 at the Nike Tournament of Champions, which included a sweep of Pensacola Catholic. Add in a preseason victory over Leon, the team that eliminated Gulf Breeze for the state playoffs last year, King has paired her team against the toughest competition with the hope of preparing for a state run.

“Last year, I looked back at some coaching decisions when it came to the schedule, and this year, I really challenged us because I wanted to be continuously challenged during the season so that when we do get into the playoffs, we have that mental toughness built up and we have that emotional stamina built up,” King said. “Last year we had an amazing team, but I don’t think we were challenged consistently enough in the regular season. … So when the going did get tough, we didn’t know how to react to that.”

Gulf Breeze improved its record to 11-3 with the win Tuesday. The team plays at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at South Walton.

Booker T. Washington 3, Escambia 0

Junior middle blocker Mallory Dickerson racked up 14 kills to lead the Wildcats to an easy sweep of the Gators. The set scores were 25-7, 25-13 and 25-18. Senior outside hitter Alex Zapatka added eight kills, 17 digs and a pair of aces while sophomore outside hitter Hannah Bradley posted eight digs and a team-best seven aces.

Escambia stats were unavailable.

Winning four of five games so far this season, the Wildcats are host to South Walton at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The Gators (1-3) are host to Pace at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Pace 3, West Florida 1

For the second time in a week, the Patriots got the upper hand against the Jaguars. On Sept. 6, Pace captured a home win against West Florida in straight sets. This time around, the Patriots needed four sets to take the match in the Jaguars’ home gym. Set scores were 25-15, 25-18, 23-25 and 25-17.

Stats were unavailable.

Coming off wins in five of its last six matches, Pace (5-3) plays at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Baker. West Florida (7-3) plays at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Central.

Milton 3, Jay 2

The Panthers needed five sets to dismiss the Royals in a tight-contested battle in Jay. Stats were unavailable. Milton (3-5) is host to Pensacola at 6 p.m. Thursday. Seeing their three-match winning streak come to an end, the Royals (7-2) face Rocky Bayou Christian at 6 p.m. Thursday in Niceville.

Choctaw 3, Tate 0

The Aggies could not keep up with the Indians, falling at home 20-25, 21-25, 13-25. It wasn’t all bad for the home team, as junior Riley Robbins reached a milestone by surpassing 350 kills and digs in her prep career.

Tate (5-11) plays at 5 p.m. Thursday at Pine Forest.

Girls Golf

Scenic Hills meet

Pine Forest’s Sarah Rudd was the low medalist after shooting a 38 during a four-team meet at the Scenic Hills Country Club. The Eagles junior finished four strokes ahead of Tate sophomore Talia Smith, who finished as the runner-up. The Aggies won the meet with a team score of 181, 17 shots ahead of Booker T. Washington.

The Crusaders captured each of their sets by the slimmest of margins during their home victory against the Falcons. The set scores were 26-24, 25-23, 17-25, and 26-24. Stats were unavailable.

Pensacola Catholic (8-5) faces Mosley at 6 p.m. Monday from Lynn Haven.

Jay 3, L.E.A.D. Academy 0

Winning each of their sets by double digits, the host Royals made quick work of the Lions. The set margins were 25-8, 25-15 and 25-8.

Baker 3, Northview 0
