High school sports rewind: Holland wrestling defeats Mona Shores, Spring Lake

After a long winter storm, Holland High was finally able to get back into action, competing at Spring Lake on Wednesday. Holland defeated Mona Shores, 47 - 33. Improving to 2-0 in the OK Green conference. Holland comes out victorious in their second dual against Spring Lake, 60-21. The Holland Varsity wrestling team improved their record to 9-1 on the year.

Going 2-0 on the night was Damian Gallegos, JoJo Morin, Solomen Owens, Luis Barajas, Cristian Castro, Michael Gibson, AJ Silva, and Nik Ortega.

Going 1-0 on the night was Cody Rozema and Donal Morin.

This Saturday Holland Hosts the annual Tim Horn Tournament.

WRESTLING

Zeeland East falls to Hamilton, Coopersville

Zeeland East wrestling was at Hamilton on Wednesday night versus Coopersville and the host Hawkeyes. East Wrestling lost to Coopersville 30 to 51 and then fell to host Hamilton 10 to 70.

Undefeated for the night for East were Marty Landes (152) and Gavin Drenten (112). In one of the more exciting matches for the night, Gavin avenged an earlier season loss by defeating Ethan Goodwin of Hamilton (a returning State Qualifier) 15 to 2.

East returns to the mats at Battle Creek Central this weekend.

West Ottawa splits quad

The West Ottawa wrestling team went 1-1 at the first annual Pin Cancer Night. In round one, the Eagles of Hudsonville bested the Panthers 21-45. In the second round, the Panthers rallied to defeat the Wildcats of Jenison 36-27. Going 2-0 on the night were Payton VanBuskirk, Owen Foster, and Andrew VanDyke.

Also of note, coach Ryan Lancaster secured his 100th career win this evening.

"It was a truly special night that will stay with me my whole career," Lancaster said. "I am blessed to have an amazing school system, a die-hard fan base, a truly skilled coaching staff, and above all, amazing wrestlers that have made this feat possible."

The Panthers return this weekend for the Tim Horn Invite.

Zeeland West splits quad

The Dux traveled to Fruitport and defeated Big Reds of Muskegon 36-21 and fell to the Trojans of Fruitport 66-9.

Going 2-0 on the night was Brody Smeyers, Tai Navarrete, and Gerritt Hartman. Going 1-0 was Kham Prothisan.

BOWLING

Zeeland boys, girls start conference season strong

The boys Bowling team entered conference play on a high note defeating Reeths Puffer by a score of 18-12. The boys swept the two baker games with a pin fall of 369 to 307. Leading the way in match play was Brett Klein with a score of 202 and Noah VanderVelde with a score of 233.

The girls bowling team exploded into conference play by dominating the competition and winning by a score of 29.5 to 1/2. Shanna McDonnell scored 201, Rylee Smith 202, Ellie Drenten 209, Alyssa Fortney 228, Morgan Smith 232, and Brianna Fortney with a 247.
