High school sports rewind: West Ottawa girls fall to Caledonia

The West Ottawa girls basketball team dropped their third straight game Saturday in Caledonia.

The Panthers were up near the end of the fourth quarter, but Caledonia battled back to send the game to overtime where they won 48-49.

Leading scorers for WO were Gabby Reynolds with 20, Grace Pedersen who scored 11 and Molly Borski with nine.

West Ottawa falls to 10-3 on the season. They hit the court again Friday at home against East Kentwood.

West Ottawa boys, girls produce champions at local meets

The West Ottawa boys wrestling team finished in third place at the Rand Jacobs Memorial at Montague High School on Saturday.

West Ottawa started the day with a 34-35 loss to Fruitport but bounced right back to defeat Orchard View 52-18. The Panthers then took down Cadillac 49-22, but stumbled against No. 3 Alma by a score of 60-15. They rounded out the day by beating the host school, 48-34.

"We have battled so much this season, and especially this week. I'm proud of the guys that showed up today," said coach Ryan Lancaster. "They go the job done, which is score bonus points."

Going undefeated on the day were Owen Foster and Mayson Levandoski. Going 4-1 were Julio Sanchez, Baylin Vanderwal and Omar Salas.

The girls team competed Friday at the Altman invitational and all five wrestlers who competed placed at the event.

Izabella Colunga and Kaitlynn earned fourth place finishes. Sophia Vargas and No. 6 Isabel Anaya finished in second place in their divisions and No. 3 Abby VanderZwaag earned first place in her weight class.

Highlights of the night were Vanderzwaag pinning #10 Joseline Leon-Magna of Three Rivers in 34 seconds. Anaya lost in the last seconds to top-ranked Gabriella Allen of Marcellus in the finals, 10-9.
