BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

—Grove City 15, Sharon 50 — At Grove City, the Tigers did not field a full team.

Senior Justice Brown (17:59) finished first for Grove City. He was followed by teammates Quinn McKnight (17:59), MJ Pottinger (18:00), Colsen Frank (18:00), and Isaiah Stauff (18:00).

Grove City, which has captured team titles at the PIAA Foundation Race and the GC John Sample Invite the past two weekends, started this season with a 93 dual-meet winning streak over the past 14 years.

Freshman Justin Sims led Sharon with a ninth-place finish in 19:20.

—Hickory 27, Slippery Rock 28 — At Slippery Rock, the Hornets captured a thrilling meet by one point over the Rockets.

Caden Riethmiller (17:26) captured first place for the Hornets. Logan Rodgers (19:04) was third, Ben Swanson (19:49) placed fifth, Jack Davis (20:37) finished eighth, and Caleb Ewing (22:21) was 10th.

For Slippery Rock, Viktor Zahn (18:12) was runner-up, Anthony Robare (19:09) was fourth, Leshan Chen (20:10) sixth, Hunter Doerflinger (20:34) seventh, and Liam Robare (21:31) placed ninth.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

—Grove City 20, Sharon 41 — At Grove City, Sharon senior Abby Douglas rolled to a first-place finish in 20:50.

Morgan Davis (22:45), Abbey Nichols (22:55), Josie Jones (22:57), Phoebe Graham (23:00), and Lily Lawson (23:03) placed second through sixth for the Eagles.

—Hickory 27, Slippery Rock 27 — At Slippery Rock, the Hornets completed the sweep with the same team score as the boys meet. Jillian White clocked in at 21:34 to place first for Hickory while Slippery Rock's Tessa Szymanski (22:57) finished second.

Also for Hickory, Macie Horvath (23:00) placed third, Abbey Black (23:57) was sixth, Ava Shellenbarger (24:03) took seventh, and Emma Iacino was 10th in 24:44.

Slippery Rock's Lexi Doerflinger (23:21) and Raely Fajohn (23:43) were fourth and fifth, respectively, while Emily Frazier (24:37) and Rylan Zupko (24:41) placed eighth and ninth.

GIRLS TENNIS

—Grove City 5, Greenville 0 — At Grove City, coach Michael Coulter's Eagles improved to 9-2 in Region 1 and 10-2 overall with the win over the Trojans.

BOYS SOCCER

—Grove City 2, Slippery Rock 2 (2OT) — At Forker Field in Grove City, the backyard rivals battled to a 2-2 Region 2 tie.

Hunter Berry and Nick Kingerski gave the Rockets a 2-0 lead in the first half before Pierson Badowski cut the lead to 2-1. Ben Donnelly scored in the second half for Grove City.

VOLLEYBALL

—West Middlesex 3, Lakeview 2 — At West Middlesex High School, the Big Reds needed a couple extra points in the final set to best Lakeview. West Middlesex won 16-25, 25-17, 25-18, 21-25, 19-17 to improve to 12-3 (8-0) on the season.

WM: Kennedy Beatty led the Big Reds with 24 kills, eight blocks and six digs. Caitlin Stephens had 47 assists and five digs. Emma Mild added nine kills and 10 digs. Alaina Bowers finished iwth seven kills and 15 digs. Avery Hanahan recorded 11 digs while Mercedes McNutt had 10. Lakeview: Stats were not reported.

WEDNESDAY

GIRLS SOCCER

—Harbor Creek 3, Slippery Rock 2 — Hannah Plunkard and Ella Thimons scored for the Rockets. Bretz scored twice for Harbor Creek and Licata rounded out the scoring. No further stats were reported.

GIRLS TENNIS

Five local teams competed in the 10-team Buhl Farm Tennis Invitational.

Grove City (18 points) finished third, Hickory (17) was fourth, Sharon (6) came in sixth, Wilmington (6) ended seventh and Greenville (0) rounded out the local teams in eighth.

Cathedral Prep won with 52 points. Warren was second with 21.

In the first singles final, Grove City's Mary Matson defeated Cathedral Prep's Anna Poranski 10-1. In the second singles final, Annie Pritchard from Cathedral Prep defeated Grove City's Cana Severson 10-2.

In the first doubles final, Cathedral Prep's Margaret Pritchard and Finnleigh Hanzel got the better of Hickory's Ava Spielvogle and Giada Bertolasio 10-4.

BOYS SOCCER

—Slippery Rock 4, Conneaut Area 0 — At Troy Alan Stadium in Slippery Rock, Nick Kingerski had a pair of goals and an assist to lead the Rockets to the Region 2 win.

Kingerski put Slippery Rock up 2-0 in the first half and Hunter Berry added a goal just before the break to make it 3-0.

Berry fired in his second goal of the game with 15 minutes left in the match to give the Rockets the 4-0 advantage.

Kingerski assisted on Berry's second goal while Cole Kovacik earned an assist on Kingerski's second goal.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

—Slippery Rock 3, Sharon 1 — At Sharon, the Rockets picked up a 25-14, 25-23, 20-25, 25-6 Region 3 win.

FOOTBALL

—Sharon 20, Slippery Rock 6 — At Slippery Rock, coach Jason McElhaney's Tigers posted an impressive Region 3 road win over the Rockets.

Sharon improved to 3-2 in the region and 4-3 overall while Slippery Rock fell to 2-3 in region play and 4-3 overall.

The Rockets took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown pass from William Mokel to Sal Mineo. The extra-point attempt by Nick Kingerski was blocked.

Sharon went up 7-6 in the second quarter on a 5-yard TD run by quarterback Mikey Rodriques and Nick Schimp's extra-point kick.

The Tigers increased the lead to 13-6 when Jayveerh White broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage in the second half.

Sharon put the game away in the fourth quarter on a QB sneak by Rodriques.

Full stats were not reported to The Herald by deadline.

—Lakeview 41, Cambridge Springs 14 — At Stoneboro Friday night, coach Bill Hickman's Sailors (5-0, 5-2) remained unbeaten in Region 1 play with the win over the Blue Devils (3-2, 4-3).

Mitchell Tingley rushed for 283 yards on 32 carries and scored four touchdowns for Lakeview. He also converted 3-of-4 extra-point kicks. On defense, Tingley led the way on defense for the Sailors with 9.5 tackles and an interception and Sean Cole recovered a fumble.

Sailors' quarterback Cameron Pence rushed for 46 yards, went 1-of-4 for 52 yards, and scored a pair of touchdowns. Leyton Zacherl also converted a 2-point conversion for Lakeview. Danick Hinkson had the 52-yard reception.

The Sailors rumbled for 416 yards in total offense.

MONDAY

GIRLS TENNIS

District 10 Singles Championships

Grove City senior Macy Matson finished as runner-up for the second straight season with a loss on Monday in the Class 2A championship match at Westwood Racquet Club in Erie.

Matson dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Cathedral Prep junior Anna Poranski, who defended her D-10 title. Last fall, Poranski defeated Matson, 6-3, 6-0, for the district crown.

Matson was trying to become Grove City's first District 10 tennis champ since Emily Gordon won four straight championships, the last in 2017.

In Monday's Class 3A championship match, Fairview's Trinity Fox captured her third straight District 10 title by beating teammate Vivian Liu, 6-3, 6-2.

Poranski and Fox advance to the PIAA Girls Tennis Tournament at Hershey Racquet Club on Nov. 4-5.

The District 10 Doubles Tournament is Thursday at Westwood.

BOYS SOCCER

—Grove City 7, Conneaut Area 1 — At Forker Field in Grove City, the Eagles (6-0-1, 12-2-1) rolled in the Region 2 encounter vs. CASH (1-6, 2-12).

Grove City fired in five goals in the first half en route to the win.

Landon Ferguson scored less than five minutes into the match for a 1-0 Eagles' lead. Jimmy Irani, Pierson Badowski (two goals), and Gage Probst added first-half goals for the 5-0 lead.

Irani and Josiah Unverzagt increased the lead to 7-0 in the second half before Conneaut Area's Collin Hearn scored with 6:23 left to end Grove City's shutout bid.

—Slippery Rock 5, Sharon 0 — At Tiger Stadium, the Rockets (6-0-1, 10-3-1) led 3-0 at the break and fired in a pair of second-half goals in the Region 2 win over Sharon.

Josh Book (15 minutes) and Connor Wallace (65 minutes) split time in goal for the Rockets (one save). The goals were not reported to The Herald.

With the loss, Sharon dropped to 0-6-1 in Region 2 and 5-7-2 overall.
