BOYS GOLF

The Grove City boys golf team took second in the 25-team Marquette Invitational at The Country Club in Meadville on Tuesday.

The Eagles shot a 47-over 335 one day after winning their fifth straight region title.

Lakeview was fourth with a 339, Mercer was tied with Meadville for sixth at 349, Reynolds placed eighth with 352, Hickory and Greenville tied Mercyhurst for 10th at 358, West Middlesex shot a 362 for 14th, Slippery Rock carded a 372 for 18th and Sharon rounded out the local teams at 406 for 23rd. Warren won the event with a 328.

Slippery Rock standout Jacob Wolak was medalist with a 3-under 69. He was the only golfer to shoot under par.

Grove City's Tyler Hamilton came in eighth with an 80. Lakeview's Jackson Gadsby shot an 81 for 12th place. Mercer's Eli Ellison and West Middlesex's Caden Bender also carded an 81. Grove City's Trent Nemec was 18th with an 82, and teammate Ethan Cunningham was 20th after recording an 83.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

—Grove City 15, Wilmington 50 — At Grove City, the Hounds did not field a full team.

Wilmington senior Emma Mason clocked in at 22:10 to finish first. The Eagles captured the next 12 spots. Josie Jones (23:10), Phoebe Graham (23:10), Morgan Davis (23:23), and Lily Lawson (23:31) rounded out the top five.

—Slippery Rock 15, Greenville 50, Moniteau 50 — At Slippery Rock, the Rockets captured seven of the top 10 spots. The Trojans and Moniteau did not field full teams.

Moniteau's Jenna Zendron won the race in a time of 22:33 while Greenville senior Megan Ickes (22:37) was runner-up.

Tessa Szymanski (23:53), Raely Fajohn (25:38), Emily Frazier (25:41), and Rylan Zupko (26:02) finished third through sixth for Slippery Rock.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

—Grove City 15, Wilmington 50 — At Grove City, the Eagles swept the top 10 spots against the Hounds.

Josh Jones (17:16), MJ Pottinger (17:16), Colsen Frank (17:35), Justice Brown (18:16), and Quinn McKnight (18:16) finished first through fifth for Grove City.

Akito Hatch (20:33) finished 11th for Wilmington.

—Slippery Rock 18, Moniteau 39, Greenville 50 — At Slippery Rock, the Rockets took six of the top 10 spots to defeat the Warriors of District 9 and the Trojans.

Viktor Zahn (18:36), Anthony Robare (20:22), Leshan Chen (20:54), and Hunter Doerflinger (21:46) finished first through fourth for Slippery Rock.

Allen Matz (22:00) finished fifth for Moniteau and freshman Ethan Iverson (25:18) led Greenville with a 13th-place finish.

BOYS SOCCER

—Mercer 6, Kennedy Catholic 0 — At Hermitage, Garrett Thumm fired in a pair of goals to power the defending D-10 Class 1A champs to a Region 1 win over the Golden Eagles.

Luke Lasko, Eli Ellison, Owen Cappelli, and Dayton Chadderton had the other goals for Mercer.

JR Schepp made three saves in goal for Mercer while Kennedy Catholic's Zach Budek registered 17 saves.

—Slippery Rock 8, Conneaut Area 0 — In Conneaut, the Rockets jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half and never looked back on Tuesday.

Hunter Berry scored four goals to lead the Rockets. Gavin Siegfried had two goals, and Nick Kingerski and Collin Wimer each had one.

Cole Kovacik had three assists, and Joey Szczerbiak, Berry and Siegfried each had one.

Conner Wallace made three stops for the Rockets. Kyle White had 10 saves for Conneaut.

GIRLS TENNIS

—Grove City 4, Sharon 1 — At Grove City, Macy Matson, Cana Severson, and Ella West swept singles play to lead the Eagles past the Tigers in the Region 1 match.

Emily Williams and Ava Dlugonski teamed up for a win at No. 1 doubles for GC while Abbey Baron and Rachel Lewis won at second doubles for Sharon.

Singles: Matson (GC) def. Megan Messina, 6-1, 6-1; Severson (GC) def. Ella Connelly, 6-3, 6-1; West (GC) def. Abby Wallace, 6-3, 6-1. Doubles: Williams-Dlugonski (GC) def. Katie Jennings-Katie Lapikas, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4; Baron-Lewis (S) def. Maura Hroncich-Joella West, 6-1, 6-1.

"Our singles players played very well against the hard-hitting Sharon players, and our first doubles team had to persevere through a tough three-set match," said Grove City coach Michael Coulter.

VOLLEYBALL

—Franklin 3, Mercer 1 — At "The Castle" in Franklin, the Knights captured the Region 3 win in four sets, 25-6, 25-15, 22-25, 25-23.

Mercer: Jillian Mount 11 assists; Ashlynn Heckathorn 4 kills; Lexie Walker 3 kills, 3 digs.

JV: Franklin, 17-25, 25-2, 15-8.

—Lakeview 3, Kennedy Catholic 0 — The Sailors cruised to victory in straight sets. They won 25-21, 25-14, 25-21.

KC: Brooke Kirkpatrick had eight digs, five assists and four aces to lead the Golden Eagles. Faith Clayton had six assists and three digs, Lydia Grove recorded five digs and four kills and Alaina Suhar finished with seven digs and three aces. Lakeview: Stats were not reported.

WEDNESDAY

GIRLS SOCCER

—Hickory 4, Grove City 2 — At Hornet Stadium, Hickory score three straight goals after falling behind 1-0 early in the first half.

Ava Chaser tied the match at 1, and goals by Emmi Rossi and Cecilia Perman gave the Hornets the lead. Abby Cozad scored on an unassisted corner kick to cap the scoring for Hickory.

Cozad and Perman each had an assist.

Grove City stats were not reported by print deadline.

THURSDAY

GIRLS GOLF

The Hickory High girls golf team captured the program's 12th straight region title on Thursday with a win in the final Region 1 Mega-Match of the season. The event was hosted by Reynolds at Bronzwood Golf Club in Kinsman.

Hickory fired a 239 to outdistance West Middlesex (316). Conneaut Area (339), and Grove City (366) rounded out the team scores.

Hickory's Sasha Petrochko, the reigning District 10 Class 2A champion, was medalist with a 70. Luciana Masters carded an 82 for the Hornets and Ava Liburdi shot an 87.

The Allied News D-10 qualifiers are: Grove City's Arnold.

West Middlesex: Kate Sowers 81, Maya Mourtacos 113, KK Leonard 122.

Conneaut Area: Brooke Wise 104, Jacqui Detelich 107, Grace Hans 128.

Grove City: Emily Sindlinger 111, Emily McIlwain 125, Annie Arnold 130.

Reynolds: Stern 80, Anna Harpst 119.

GIRLS SOCCER

—Slippery Rock 17, Sharon 0 — On Senior Night at Troy Alan Stadium in Slippery Rock, Oliva Rock rifled in four goals as the host squad rolled to the Region 2 win.

Emma Hays, Simone Laslavic, Hannah Plunkard, Ella Thimons, and Emily Plyler scored two goals each for SR. Mackenzie Balquist, Ava Daugherty, and Calley Wolinski had the other goals for the Rockets.

VOLLEYBALL

—Sharpsville 3, Slippery Rock 1 — At "The Rock Box" in Slippery Rock, Bella Ritenour registered 25 kills, eight digs, and five blocks and Ryleigh Fry collected 52 assists as the Devils (4-0, 6-1) captured the Region 3 contest, 25-22, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23.

Sharpsville: Lillian Morrison 10 points, 7 kills, 7 digs; Breanna Hanley 12 kills, 10 digs; Chasie Fry 10 points, 11 kills, 19 digs; Paige Doyle 8 digs. Slippery Rock: No stats reported.

JV: Slippery Rock, 25-19, 25-21.

—Oil City 3, Mercer 1 — At Mercer, the Oilers dropped the first set, but rebounded to pick up the Region 3 victory, 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-21.

Mercer: Ashlynn Heckathorn 7 kills; Jillian Mount 10 assists; Lexie Walker 5 kills, 7 digs; Maddie Daris 6 aces, 18 digs.

JV: Mercer, 25-9, 25-23.

FRIDAY

FOOTBALL

—Mercer 45, Cochranton 0 — At Mercer, Daemyin Mattocks ran for four touchdowns as the Mustangs (2-1, 3-2) rolled to the Region 1 rout.

Mattocks scored on runs of 11, 11, 2, and 20 yards while Carter Addison scored on a 24-yard run and a 68-yard fumble return.

Also for Mercer, Ben Godfrey reached the end zone on a 13-yard run.

With the loss, Cochranton fell to 1-2 in Region 1 and 1-3 overall.

—Eisenhower 35, Lakeview 13 — At Stoneboro Friday, the Region 2 Knights improved to a perfect 5-0 with the win over the Region 1 Sailors (3-2). Ike ended the Sailors' three-game winning streak.

Lakeview took a quick 7-0 lead on a 54-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Pence to Danick Hinkson. Mitchell Tingley booted the PAT.

Eisenhower answered quickly as Keegan Eckstrom returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a score. Cole Kellogg kicked the extra-point to tie the game at 7-all.

Eisenhower pulled away by scoring the next three touchdowns. Benji Bauer scored on a 4-yard run, Tucker Lindell had a 3-yard TD run, and Shawn Pascuzzi had a 22-yard touchdown run.

Lakeview cut the lead to 27-13 in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run by Pence. The extra-point kick was blocked.

Ike closed out the scoring on a 22-yard run by Bauer.

Pence was 5-of-8 for 169 yards. Hinkson caught four passes for 160 yards. Tingley led Lakeview's ground game with 72 yards on 16 carries.

GIRLS

Norwin (52), DuBois Area (84), Fairview (189), West Middlesex (192), and Hickory (216) were the top five finishers in the girls varsity race. Slippery Rock placed eighth, Lakeview was 10th, Sharpsville 16th, Greenville 17th, and Commodore Perry placed 19th.

Lakeview's Kady Alexander (19:58) finished ninth, and Sharon senior Abby Douglas placed 12th in a time of 20:04.

Slippery Rock sophomore Tessa Szymanski (20:35) finished 17th, Lakeview freshman Kendall Emmert (20:40) finished 19th.

Slippery Rock senior Lexi Doerflinger (21:33) finished 34th.

BOYS

Norwin (72), Eden Christian (74), Quaker Valley (106), Ft. LeBoeuf (127), and Punxsutawney (151) were the top five teams in the boys race.

Lakeview (214) seventh and Slippery Rock (306) took 11th.

Lakeview senior Colson Jenkins led the locals with a fifth-place finish in 15:53.

Lakeview freshman James Alexander (16:22) took 14th, Slippery Rock junior Viktor Zahn (16:27) placed 18th.

Slippery Rock's Anthony Robare (17:35) took 43rd.
