High school sports roundup: Eoghan Cullen from Lake Weir hired as football coach at Forest

Forest announced the hiring of Eoghan Cullen as its new football coach on Friday morning.

Cullen comes from Lake Weir, where he spent two years. He replaces Robin Williams, who was let go by FHS at the end of the 2021 season.

Boys soccer

West Port 4, Trinity Catholic 2: Down 2-1 at the half, host West Port scored three second-half goals. Max Maysonet (2 goals), Solomen Al-failakawi (goal) and Iran Faria (goal) led WPHS.

The county champion Wolf Pack (12-2-1) will compete in the District 2-7A tournament next week. The Celtics (9-4-1) will compete in the District 4-3A tournament next week.

Forest 2, Lake City Columbia 0: At CHS, the Wildcats scored a goal each half and kept the Tigers’ 10 shots out of the net. FHS (12-6-1) will face Groveland South Lake next Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of the District 4-6A tournament.

Belleview 2, Tavares 2: At THS, the Rattlers scored a pair of goals in the second half to overcome a 2-0 deficit. BHS (9-7-1) will compete in the District 5-5A tournament next week.

Eastside 5, North Marion 1: At EHS, the Colts (3-13-1) will compete in the District 3-4A tournament next week.

Girls soccer

North Marion 5, Belleview 1: At BHS, the Colts scored three goals in the first half and two in the second to claim the win. NMHS (9-9) will visit Forest on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Belleview (4-11) will visit Leesburg on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Forest 8, Lake Weir 0: At LWHS, the Wildcats (8-7-2) will host North Marion on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while the Hurricanes (3-9-1) will visit Palatka on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Boys basketball

Meadowbrook 70, St. John Lutheran 68 (OT): At Meadowbrook, Coy Sizemore scored 39 points, including the game-winning layup with 2.8 seconds to go for host Meadowbrook (13-5). LT Sizemore (12 points) and Will Henry (7 points, 12 rebounds) also had big nights for the Mustangs.

The Saints (2-12) will face Inverness Citrus on Saturday at 6 p.m.

Redeemer Christian 41, Cedar Key 25: At CKHS, the Lions were led by Andrew Powers (11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals), Grant Phillips (9 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) and Tuna Hill (8 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals).

Redeemer (12-4) will visit Umatilla on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Bushnell South Sumter 69, Dunnellon 54: At SSHS, the Tigers were led by a trio of freshmen, Devontae Ward-Grant (11 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds), Sean Simpson (10 points, 3 steals) and Eli Nelson (10 points, 5 rebounds). DHS (14-6) will visit Crescent City on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Leesburg 82, Belleview 26: At LHS, the Rattlers (4-14) will host Redeemer Christian on Tuesday at 7 p.m.


Girls basketball

Meadowbrook 52, St. John Lutheran 23: At Meadowbrook, the hosts were paced by Lanina Murillo (12 points, 3 steals) and Angel Ross (9 points, 6 rebounds), while the Saints were led by Layla Salman (12 points, 3 steals). Meadowbrook is 10-4. St. John (0-13) will host Dunnellon on Monday at 6 p.m.

Cedar Key 29, Redeemer Christian 22: At CKHS, the Lions (8-8) will visit Lake Weir on Friday at 6 p.m.
