Girls Lacrosse

District 8-1A Final

Benjamin 7, Jensen Beach 6

JENSEN BEACH — Entering the District 13-1A as the No. 4 seed, Benjamin’s girls lacrosse team relished the role of being discounted by whoever stood in their way.

After knocking out top seed South Fork on the road in the semifinals, the Bucs did it again as freshman Madison Jayson’s tie-breaking goal capped off a four-goal comeback in the second half in a 7-6 win at second seed Jensen Beach in Friday’s District 8-1A championship.

"The girls certainly had a bit of a chip on their shoulders and so did I," Benjamin head coach Quinn Roe said. "We felt a little surprised to be down at halftime and we flushed the first half and hit the reset button. We relied on what we are good at and played five seconds at a time (in the second half)."

Weather pushed the title game back a day and from the start Friday, the Bucs (11-7) couldn’t figure out a way past Jensen Beach junior goalkeeper Grace Thomas.

The Falcon standout made several saves from point-blank range and on direct attempts and while Thomas did her thing, junior Julia Kerr and freshman Kai Valko were on their game in attack offensively.

Valko netted the first two goals of the game for Jensen Beach and Kerr took over late in the first half. Netting four goals, including a pair in the final 21 seconds of the half, Kerr helped the Falcons (13-5) lead 6-2.

As dominant as Kerr was in the first half, Benjamin junior and Lehigh commit Ava Schulties was as impactful in the second half for the Bucs.

Jensen Beach's Julia Kerr is defended by Benjamin's Pryce Savidge during the District 13-1A girls lacrosse championship game on Friday, April 14, 2023 in Jensen Beach. Benjamin won 7-6.

Scoring 32 seconds in, Schulties was in the middle of all the action for Benjamin. Jayson scored midway through the second half to make it a 6-4 game and senior Nicole Nicklaus tacked on another to make it a one-goal game with 11 minutes to go.

Schulties tied the game, taking advantage of a turnover deep in Jensen Beach territory with 8:44 remaining and created the game-winning strike.

Stick-checking the ball away from a Falcon in possession, Schulties lobbed the ball to Jayson, who was clean in one-on-one with Thomas and was able to beat one of the Treasure Coast’s best keepers to give the Bucs a 7-6 lead with seven minutes to go.

"Madison’s definitely grown up a lot during the season and has a lot of talent," Roe said about her freshman attacker. "She’s a lefty, really comfortable on that side and is a really good precision shooter so I knew she’d nail that one."

With their lead, the Bucs did a masterful job of keeping the ball away from Jensen Beach with Schulties and team captains Nicklaus and senior Grace Tighe all providing the leadership expected out of them from their head coach.

"With Ava, it was not unexpected to see her take control of the game the way she did because that’s the type of player she is," Roe said. "Then with Nicole and Grace, they don’t always show up on the scoresheet but they’re people I can lean on as a coach that I know will take control of the emotions on the field and take the game into their own hands to reset everybody."

The victory will send Benjamin into the state tournament while Jensen Beach will have to wait and see if reaching a district final was enough to earn an at-large berth in Region 4-1A.

The Falcons entered the district tournament sixth in the region and were ahead of King’s Academy, who faltered in a district semifinal which should leave Jensen Beach feeling that their season will continue.

Questions as to where South Fork will fall in the bracket will be another question answered after their semifinal loss to Benjamin as the Bulldogs entered the district tournament ranked third in Region 4-1A.

For the Bucs, a loaded schedule during the year was something Roe felt helped her girls in their district title run and now believes a confident team that has won five in a row can be formidable in the postseason.

"I think this tournament was confirmation that, we know who we are despite people maybe not giving us credit," Roe said. "We’ve put in the work and we feel confident moving forward that we can take on some opponents that knocked us out last year."
