High school sports tracker: Marion County highlights and schedule this week

With Hurricane Ian no longer threatening Marion County sports, our students take the court for week 7. We have a stacked slate of games with reschedules adding to the action.

Stay up to date with us for schedules and scores as we compile stats from games all around Marion County. Below are scores and schedules from Oct. 3-Oct. 9.

Volleyball

Monday, Oct. 3

Belleview defeats Redeemer (18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19)

The Rattlers win a four-set match against the Lions. Belleview increases the win streak to two games while Redeemer Christian drops its first match in five games.

St. John Lutheran defeats Lecanto Seven Rivers Christian (25-10, 25-13, 25-16)

The Saints increase their win streak with a sweep. Sophomore Rylee Palmateer led all hitters with 11 kills.

Meadowbrook defeats St. Francis (25-18, 25-18, 25-14)

Meadowbrook earns a bounce-back win against the Wolves. Sophomore Angel Ross led all players with 13 kills. Senior Cianna Parchment had a team-high 17 assists.

Cedar Key defeats OCA (25-14, 21-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-5)

The Crusaders fall to the Sharks. Senior Alexa Botticello had 3 aces and 8 kills and freshman Brook Daunhauer had 8 digs, 4 aces, and 3 kills in the loss.

Tuesday, Oct. 4

West Port defeats North Marion (19-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-21, 15-13)

The Wolfpack avenge an early season loss to the Colts with a close five-set win. Junior Kendall Smith led West Port with 8 kills, junior Ayanna Blocker scored 6 kills, and freshman Joslynn Galvan posted an additional 6 kills. Senior Pressley Sutter had a team high 25 assists.

Dunnellon defeats Lake Weir (25-27, 25-20, 26-24, 25-22)

The Tigers took a close win from the scrappy Hurricanes. Senior Macie Dewitz collected 5 kills, 7 aces, and 14 digs for Dunnellon. Sophomore Nia Heppner chipped in 5 kills, 6 digs, and a game high 5 blocks for the Tigers.

Forest defeats Buchholz (25-12, 25-21, 25-19)

The Lady Wildcats protect homecourt with a sweep. Junior Ava Keuntjes spread the ball around for a season-high 35 assists. Junior Kailyn Howard had a game high 12 kills with freshman Allison Hamm trailing with 11 kills.

St. John defeats Belleview (25-15, 25-17, 25-16)

The Saints continue their winning streak with a sweep over the Rattlers. Sophomore Rylee Palmateer had a match-high 14 kills. Sophomore Ashley Downs recorded a game high 31 assists. Sophomores Payton Nazzari and Isabelle Baluyot had great defensive games, combining for 32 digs and 28 receives.

Foundation defeats Redeemer (25-18, 26-24, 25-12)

Redeemer falls in back to back games for the first time this season. Senior Bella Acosta led her team with 8 kills and junior Ashley Moss was one step behind with 7 kills. Senior Meghan Killian recorded a game-high 23 kills.

Seven Rivers Christian defeats Meadowbrook (20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12)

The Warriors defeat the Mustangs in a back and fourth five-set bout. Sophomore Angel Ross continues her double digit kill streak with a team-high 13.

OCA defeats First Baptist Christian (25-12, 25-16, 27-25)

The Crusaders win their fifth game of the season with a sweep. Despite a close third set, freshman Valery Alamo and junior Brianna Ray combined for 15 aces, scoring 8 and 7, respectively. Ray chipped in a team-high four kills.

Trinity Catholic defeats Vanguard (25-14, 25-17, 25-18)

Wednesday, Oct. 5

Forest defeats West Port (25-19, 25-16, 25-16)

The Lady Wildcats stretch their win streak to four games over West Port. Pressley Sutter's 14 assists and Kendall Smith's 7 kills paced the Wolfpack in the loss. Allison Hamm led the Wolfpack with 7 kills. Kailyn Howard had 6 kills for Forest. Avery O’Cull scored 10 service points with 3 aces.

Bushnell South Sumter defeats Lake Weir (25-23, 25-22, 25-10)

South Sumter protects their house against the Hurricanes. Lake Weir continues to show fight in their 0-12 season.

The Villages defeats North Marion (25-11, 25-19, 25-16)

North Marion shows improvement in their second matchup of the season. The Colts doubled their overall score through three sets.

Vanguard defeats St. John Lutheran (25-21, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20)

Vanguard edges out the Saints in a close four set match. St. John Lutheran sophomores Rylee Palmateer, 20, and Sophia Ochoa, 15, scored a combined 35 of the Saints' 44 kills.

Thursday, Oct. 6

Santa Fe defeats Vanguard (25-12, 26-24, 25-23)

The Raiders put the Knights away in straight sets. Despite the loss, Vanguard head coach Luis Perez was excited with the product his team put on the floor. Senior Ruby Owen, who is on an official visit to Tusculum University, and sophomore Sarah Beville recorded a team-high nine kills. Beville chipped in five digs to go along with Lillian Hart's four kills, two solo blocks, 2 assisted blocks, and Sophie Reed's four kills, 21 assists, 1 service ace, three digs, and one block. Overall, it was a good defensive night against the best volleyball team in the state.

Belleview defeats North Marion (17-25, 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 15-6)

The Rattlers celebrate a bounce back win after their loss to St. John Lutheran. North Marion fought hard to stay in the game but couldn't avoid its fifth consecutive loss. Belleview goes above .500 for the first time since Sept. 17.

West Port defeats Redeemer (18-25,25-18,21-25,25-21, 15-11)

The Wolfpack earns a big bounce back win over Redeemer. The five set bout ended with Westport's Kendall Smith and the Lion's Bella Acosta tallying a game high 11 kills. Westport won with the serve recorded 27 aces on the night.

Tallahassee Chiles defeats Forest (25-21, 25-19, 25-13)

Chiles makes their three hour drive to Ocala worth it with a three set sweep.

Sarasota Cardinal Mooney defeats Trinity Catholic (25-16, 25-16, 25-20)

Cardinal Mooney gives Trinity Catholic their third loss of the season. Texas commit Jordyn Byrd led all hitters with 17 kills. Celtics junior Avery Campise recorded a team high 15 kills.

Hernando Christian defeats Meadowbrook (25-15, 25-8, 25-21)

The Mustangs stuttered in their three set loss to Hernando. For the first time this season no one crossed the 5 kill mark. Senior Cianna Parchment recorded a season low 6 assists.

Saturday, Oct. 8

Monday, Oct. 3

Lake Weir defeats Dunnellon 852-519

The Hurricanes defeat the Tigers in four frames. Lake Weir's leading bowler was Caydon Conner. Leonora Hoyte of Dunnellon had a game-high 114.

West Port defeats Belleview 1528-920

The Wolfpack took a decisive win over the Rattlers. CC Kinchen of West Port scored a season high 213 and 215. Belleview's Jordan Jones recorded a team-high 161.

Forest defeats Vanguard 1428-1290

In the closest game of the night, the Wildcats topped the Knights. Madison Rogers shot a season-high 214 for Forest. Ena Thurman posted a team-high 154 for Vanguard.

Thursday, Oct. 6

Girls Golf

Tuesday, Oct. 4

Forest defeats Vanguard and Belleview (163-215-NA)

The Lady Wildcats scored a season-low 163 to win their tri-match against the Knights and the Rattlers. Haley Davis led all golfers with a 35. Forest teammates Olivia Robles and Madi Chandler scored personal bests with a 47 and 49, respectively.

Forest defeats The Villages 212-258

The Wildcats earn another win at Ocala National golf course with a 46-stroke victory over The Villages. Sophomore Taylor Galavis shot a match-best 35 to medal.

West Port continues its dominance in the pool by capturing the Mid Florida Conference boys overall title. The Wolfpack(456) earned 8 first place finishes, including another sweep of the boys relay events. Vanguard (159) finishes third, Trinity Catholic (149) fifth, Belleview (102) 10th, Forest (95) 11th, Dunnellon (43) 13th, and Redeemer Christian (38) 14th.

The Wolfpack(329) earn another big meet with four first-place victories under their belt. West Port goes 2 for 3 in relays, taking first in the 200- and 400-yard freestyles. Vanguard just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish. Trinity Catholic placed seventh, Forest ninth, Belleview 11th, and Dunnellon was 13th.

Trinity Catholic placed 10th in the overall meet with Cedric McFadden leading all Ocala area runners with a 4th-place finish in 16:29. North Marion's top runner was Allanhirschrick Rojas, who ran a 20:35.

Girls Cross Country

New World Fall Spectacular

Trinity Catholic and North Marion didn't have enough runners to qualify for the meet. Each had a runner place in the top 100. The Celtics' top 5K finisher was Josie Leonard, who ran a 23:16. The Colts' best runner freshman Chloe Fields ran a 23:01.
