High school sports: Trinity Catholic softball team falls in regional quarterfinals

The Trinity Catholic softball team jumped out to a three-run lead after one inning but wasn't able to hold off host No. 3 seed Winter Garden Foundation Academy in a 4-3 FHSAA Class 2A, Region 2 quarterfinal loss on Wednesday night.

The sixth-seeded Celtics (14-14) were led by Macie Spohn (2 for 3, run, RBI, 2B), Emma Simms (1 for 3, 2 RBIs), Anjali Vassou (1 for 3, run), Jayden Holder (1 for 3, 2B) and Emma Wyman (6 IP, with 2 hits and 1 ER allowed with 7 Ks).

Elizabeth Ozim finished 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs to lead the Lions (16-8), who will visit No. 2 seed Mount Dora Christian Academy (19-9) in Tuesday’s regional semifinal.

Class 1A state track

Trinity Catholic’s Skylar Moore finished 11th in the girls' javelin and teammate Cedric McFadden placed 14th in the boys' 1,600 on Wednesday at the FHSAA Class 1A state track and field championships at Percy Beard Track on the UF campus.

Moore made a throw of 30.95 meters, a little better than the 30.71 meters she threw in the 1A, Region 2 meet last week.

McFadden ran a 4:35.99, slightly faster than the 4:36.30 he ran in regionals last week.

Johnson signs

A year ago, Laniya Johnson tore her PCL while playing travel basketball. She had to sit out more than six months and wondered if she’d ever be able to return to her old form, much less get better.

But rehab, grit and hard work allowed her to push through, average 21.4 points per game (second-best in Marion County), 3.3 steals and 2.4 assists, earn a spot as a first-team all-county guard, and, on Wednesday, become the first girls basketball player in Belleview history to sign a national letter of intent.

In addition to that, the new Warner University signee will leave the Rattlers as the school's record-holder for points in a game and in a season.

“Wow, I actually did it, I did what I doubted myself for,” part of a tweet Johnson posted read. “I came back stronger, so maybe my injury was a sign to push harder, maybe my injury was a good thing.”
