High school sports: Vanguard, Trinity Catholic advance in girls soccer districts

District soccer tournaments got under way on Wednesday, and numerous local girls teams were in action.

The Vanguard and Trinity Catholic girls claimed first-round victories, while West Port, Belleview, Lake Weir and Dunnellon were eliminated. The biggest individual performance came from Trinity Catholic’s Taryn Reardon, who scored seven goals to lift the Celtics past Williston.

Vanguard 11, Belleview 0: At VHS, the third-seeded Knights (10-5) will face No. 2 seed Lecanto (14-4) in Monday’s District 5-5A semifinals. The sixth-seeded Rattlers ended their season at 4-13.

Trinity Catholic 9, Williston 1: At TC, in addition to Reardon’s performance, the Celtics (9-6-1) got single goals from Kaley Alava and Josie Leonard. Third-seeded Trinity will visit No. 2 seed Keystone Heights (14-5-3) in Thursday’s 5 p.m. District 4-3A semifinal.

Port Orange Spruce Creek 5, West Port 0: At Spruce Creek, in the quarterfinals of the District 2-7A tournament the third-seeded Hawks ended No. 6 seed WPHS’s season at 11-6-4.

Crystal River 5, Lake Weir 0: At CRHS, the fifth-seeded Hurricanes (3-12-1) saw their season conclude with a loss to the No. 4 seed in District 5-4A.

Tavares 8, Dunnellon 0: At THS, the sixth-seeded Tigers (2-13) saw their season end with a loss to the No. 3 seed in 5-4A.

West Port 47, P.K. Yonge 45: In its regular-season finale, the P.K. Yonge hosted the Wolf Pack — a team that, heading into the matchup, was streaking with back-to-back wins. After a tightly contested first quarter, the Wolf Pack separated from the Blue Wave (7-5) with an offensive explosion in the second quarter, paving the way for West Port to improve to 10-8. Prior to Wednesday night’s matchup, West Port was averaging 44.3 points per game, while P.K. Yonge was pacing 53.3 points per game.

Trinity Catholic 61, Bushnell South Sumter 38: At SSHS, the Celtics jumped out to a 14-4 advantage after one quarter and never looked back.

Trinity was led by Rose Gravel (21 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals), Kieley Bateman (11 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists), Dasanni Bentley (9 points) and Heaven Sanders (7 points, 6 assists, 4 steals). The Celtics (19-4) will compete in the District 3-3A tournament next week.

Hawthorne 80, Forest 18: At HHS, the Wildcats (1-20) will host Spring Hill Springstead on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Boys basketball

Dunnellon 79, Crescent City 64: At CCHS, the Tigers were paced by Aramys Rodriguez (20 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 steals), Colton Lee (13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals) and Zion Rodney (10 points, 4 rebounds).

Winners in six of eight games in the new year, DHS (15-6) will host Belleview on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

North Marion 50, Eastside 44: At EHS, the Colts were led by D’marion Cooper (15 points, 3 steals), Byiza Ntoza (11 points) and Elija Walton (9 points, 10 rebounds).

NMHS (12-8) will visit Williston on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Villages 65, Trinity Catholic 60: At The Villages, the Celtics were outscored 22-17 in the fourth quarter to fall to 17-4. Trinity will host Lake City Columbia on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
