High School Student accidentally shot by deputy teaching a law enforcement class

An Indiana high school student was accidently shot by a deputy teaching a law enforcement class, according to a spokesperson with Indiana State Police (ISP).

Deputy Tim DisPennett, a 19 year veteran of the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department, was instructing students on various types of law enforcement scenarios at South Vermillion High School in Clinton, Indiana on Thursday morning, the spokesperson said in a media release.

During his lesson, Deputy DisPennett accidentally discharged his service weapon, striking a student in the classroom, the spokesperson said. Medical assistance was immediately rendered to the student before being transported to a hospital in Terre Haute with non-life threatening injuries.

Deputy DisPennett has been placed on administrative leave as Indiana State Police Detectives, Jason Schoffstall, Don Curtis and Mike Featherling with the assistance of First Sergeant Brian Maudlin and CSI Sergeant Brandon Mullen investigate the incident further, the spokesperson said.

This is an active and ongoing investigation, according to the media release. There is no further information to release at the moment.

Once the investigation is complete, ISP detectives will complete a full report of the incident to the Vermillion County Prosecutor’s Office to review, the spokesperson said.
