Brayden Bahme was in his second year at Cheney High School in the state of Washington when he suffered a life-threatening injury that ultimately claimed his life, Cheney Public Schools Superintendent Ben Ferney said, according to KREM.

Bahme was in his fourth-period physical education class when he fell into a goal post and was “impaled through the eye while running,” Cheney Fire Chief Tom Jenkins said.

Emergency responders arrived on scene minutes after the incident and transported him to Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.

Bahme’s family expressed their sadness and requested financial aid from the public to pay for the student’s burial expenses and the family’s immediate needs. The remaining funds would reportedly be used to create a youth fishing program in honor of Bahme, who was affectionately known as “fish pockets” Bahme, KREM said.

Counselors were made available during this time to support students and staff who needed grief counseling, Ferney informed.

A candlelight vigil was held for Bahme May 1 at Crunks Sports Complex. Attendees were asked to bring small white candles and fishing gear in honor of the deceased student. The fishing gear was to be donated in his name.
