An image of two Minnesota high school students holding a Hitler-themed dance proposal on a poster and giving the Nazi salute is being condemned by the school and community.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that the teenagers used the offensive message as an invitation to Minnetonka High School’s Valentine’s Dance, called Sweethearts.

The message read, “Sweethearts would be a Hit(ler) w/you, and I could Nazi myself going w/anybody else. Be Mein? Yes or Nein.”

The photo was initially posted by the female student in the picture on her private Instagram account. The caption read, “Also I would like to state I am not anti-Semitic in any way, I hate all races equally.”

Minnetonka High School’s principal, Jeff Erickson, was quick to send an email to students and staff denouncing the “deeply offensive message” and stating that it “in no way aligns with our school’s core values: do the right thing and represent us well.” Yahoo Lifestyle has reached out to Erickson and the school for further comment.

Erickson informed students and staff that the photo has been removed but would not report what disciplinary actions the students may face. “Please know that we take this matter seriously and are committed to ensuring a safe, positive environment for all students,” Erickson said.

Erickson went on to say, “Our foundation as a school community is built on respect, kindness and consideration to others. Our work in this area is ongoing, and it is one of our highest priorities. As a greater school community, I ask that you continue the dialogue around these core values. As a school, we will do so, as well.”
