HIGH SCHOOL TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: First day of the MIAA basketball tournament

The MIAA high school winter state tournament kicked off on Monday.

Eight South Shore schools tipped the tournament off on the hardwood. Holbrook, Plymouth South, Marshfield and Hull opened play in the boys tournament while Middleboro, Hanover, Pembroke and Brockton kicked play off in the girls bracket.

Overall, 89 basketball and hockey schools from the area qualified for the state tournament, with 54 teams on the hardwood and 35 on the ice.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Holbrook 70, Falmouth Academy 23: The No. 14 Bulldogs (17-4) rolled over the No. 51 seed in the Division 5 preliminary round. Holbrook the winner of No. 19 Calvary Chapel Academy and Smith on Friday (time TBD).

Revere 55, Plymouth South 50: Revere trailed Plymouth South 50-45 with 3:01 left before going on a 10-0 run to finish thing up and grab a 55-50 win over the Panthers in Division 2 action. Revere senior captain Alejandro Hincapie hit four huge free throws in the final two minutes for the Patriots. They advance to face No. 6 Nashoba Regional.

Plymouth South (11-10) got 11 points each from Liam Davis and Jamie Andrews. Justin LaChance had 10 points in the loss.

Revere Senior captain Dominic Boudreau led all scorers with 16 points.

Springfield Central 56, Marshfield 48: James Leach, James Molloy and Ryan Treacy each scored 9 points in the loss for the No. 40 Rams (13-8) in the Division 1 prelim.

Hull 64, Athol 42: The No. 20 Pirates (6-12) advance to play at No. 5 Maynard in the Division 5 Round of 32 on Friday at 7 p.m. Tommy Burke (25 points) and Austin Bongo (11) both had career highs in the win. Tyler Sordillo added 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dartmouth 58, Middlbeoro 41: Lila Peddie scored 10 points for the No. 36 Sachems (11-12) in Division 2. Hailey Iwanski added 8 points. Katherine Cheesebro led the way for Dartmouth with 28 points and 11 rebounds.

Hanover 73, High School of Commerce 16: The No. 21 Hawks (15-5) advance to play at No. 12 South High on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Division 2 Round of 32. Tess Madden (21 points), Noey Giardina (12) and Mary Kate Flynn (11) led the way for Hanover.

Bedford 49, Pembroke 45: The No. 34 Titans (11-10) trailed by 11 points after one quarter and rallied, but ultimately fell short in the Division 2 prelim.

New Bedford 55, Brockton 44: The No. 37 Boxers (13-8) lost in the Division 1 prelim. Junior Tajeiha Madison scored 13 points in the loss while Sunali Carter added 10. Naveiha Madison chipped in 7 and Nevaeh King finished with 6 points and 11 rebounds.
