HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL WEDNESDAY UPDATE | KHS, Overton, Sabine all win in sweeps

Sep. 15—Coach Madeline Harris and her Kilgore Bulldogs volleyball squad evened their District 16-4A record on Tuesday night with a very important win over Cumberland Academy.

Kilgore swept Cumberland, 25-10, 25-22, 25-14, here at KHS on Tuesday night, and that left the Lady 'Dogs 1-1 in 16-4A, with a home game against always-tough Bullard on Friday (varsity plays first, at 4:30, with junior varsity and freshmen to follow).

At this writing, Bullard is 2-0 in district, after sweeping Chapel Hill on Tuesday.

Looking ahead, Kilgore is on the road twice next week: at Chapel Hill on Tuesday night, starting with freshmen first as usual, and then at Lindale next Friday, Sept. 24.

Against Cumberland, Brooke Couch, just a freshman, had seven aces and five kills. Catherine Dennis and Maleah Thurmond each had four kills; Dennis had a block assist and Thurmond had two block solos and a block assist. Ashton Vallery had four aces and a kill. Brionne Brooks had five kills and a block assist. Alana Mumphrey had four aces; Cailey Brown had three; and Summer Hayden-Epps had a kill and a block assist.

Overton: Coach Rickey Hammontree and the Lady Mustangs got back on track with a big win of their own Tuesday night, a sweep of rival Carlisle, 25-15, 25-20, 25-11.

For Overton, Mary Fenter had 10 kills, a block, 12 digs, two assists and two aces; Chloe Laws had nine kills, 13 digs and two aces; Kayla Nobles had seven kills, three digs, two assists and six aces; and Kaley McMillan had six kills, 18 digs, 19 assists and three aces.

Overton is also 1-1 in District 19-2A, in which they compete with Leverett's Chapel, Union Grove, Big Sandy, Hawkins, Carlisle, and Union Hill. The Lady Mustangs are 17-10 overall, and are back in action Friday on the road at Big Sandy, a varsity-only date starting at 4:30 p.m.

Sabine: The Lady Cardinals also won in a sweep Tuesday, taking down Gladewater and going 2-0 in District 15-4A in the process.

The Lady Cardinals (19-9) have an open date on Friday and then are on the road twice next week: at Daingerfield on Tuesday night, starting with JV at 5 p.m., and then at New Diana on Friday, varsity-only, at 4:30.

Against Gladewater, Cale Brown had 15 kills. Caitlyn Stewart had nine of them, and two blocks. Maddie Furrh had seven kills and 11 digs. Peyton Childress had five kills and two digs. Caitlin Bates had two kills. Ally Gresham had eight points and 22 digs. Kathryn Darby had a block and a kill. Kaleigh Carney had three digs. Ella Roberts had two kills, Bella Shaw had two digs and Riley Lux had six assists.
